A reader from Belgium emailed me the other day wanting to learn more about baseball. I gave him a few suggestions and then thought, what a great idea for a post. Why not make this information available in one place so that everyone can benefit?

The Golf Pitch Shot

A pitch or "pitch shot" is a shot played with a highly lofted club (pitching wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge) that is designed to go a short distance with a high flight path. Pitch shots are usually played into the green, typically from 40-50 yards and closer. It's easy to picture a pitch shot when it is contrasted with the chip or chip shot. A chip shot is played from much closer to the green and the ball is in the air only a short (1/3) amount of time; the point is to get the ball onto the surface of the green and let it roll (2/3) toward the cup. Most of a chip shot is roll. A pitch shot, on the other hand, is in the air for most (2/3) of its distance, with much less roll (1/3) once it hits the ground. Playing Golf For A Living

    JB Baseball History
Junk Ball Combines Physics and Aerodynamics
Junk Ball plastic baseballs are designed to make it easy for anyone to throw major league pitches like curves, sliders, screwballs, even knuckleballs.
That's because Junk Ball baseballs apply scientific principles from both physics and aerodynamics to produce pitches you can throw that truly baffle a batter. Baseball History
The first pitcher to throw a curve ball was Candy Cummings way back in the 1860's. Cummings discovered that by gripping the ball a certain way and twisting his wrist he could use the seams of the spinning baseball to move the ball in different directions towards the batter.
For almost 100 years fans of real baseball believed that curveballs, screwballs, sliders, etc. were optical illusions. It wasn't until the early 1950's that scientists were able to use strobe photography and wind tunnel tests to prove that baseballs really did curve. Of course, you didn't have to prove this to pitchers or batters! What is a Junk Ball Pitch?

The Fredonia State baseball program has a long and storied history. The team has been competing at the collegiate level for over five decades. There have been several players from the program continue their careers at the professional level, including former major leaguer Jeff Shaver. The Blue Devils had a highly successful program from the late 50's through the early 70's, competing against many Division I and II teams. Longtime head coach Bill Ludwig was the leader of the Blue Devil charge for much of that period. The Blue Devil's home field currently bears his name. In the summer of 1980, Dale Till was hired as the head coach at Fredonia State after serving six years as an assistant under Ludwig. One of Till's first moves was to hire Dave Criscione as his assistant. It was a relationship that would last 20 years and several hundred victories.

Sunday afternoon pastimes in the hamlets and small towns on the North Dakota prairie in the late 1880's and the early 1900's included the competitive game of baseball and Wyndmere was no exception. Wherever family or neighborhood gatherings were held during the spring and summer months baseball was played. Men and boys "chose up" sides and with the "womenfolk" as spectators, competitive games were played. The first baseball diamond was located north of West Birch, where the race track and grandstand were standing. With the automobiles arrival, the population became more mobile and competition was created between towns. About that time the baseball diamond was moved south of the schools where the present school now stands. 1933 Baseball Team Front Row: Duane Mellem, Gordon Jones, Shorty Naze, Fred Pelvit, George Carver, Arnold Dahlman.
