Planning Committee Tell Us About You See the Stories ... Contact Us Basketball History By Harold and Betty Becker The great support of their basketball teams is no doubt a tradition of the Wyndmere community. There has been a team as long as they have had a school. Mr. Roy Johnson -relates that the 1916 basketball team was coached by Martin Anderson. Irwin Sargeant, Eddie Anderson (no relation to the coach), Maurice Hoy, Billy Hanson and Roy Johnson were members of the team. Their first game was with an experienced Milnor team and the score was 84-4 in favor of Milnor. Many of the trips to games were made by train and bobsled. In a letter to the 1971 Basketball Class "B" champs, Mr. Lee M. Enochson tells of his being a member of the 1916-17 team. "I believe 1916-17 was the beginning of basketball at Wyndmere and I was a member of that squad. I recall that each one of us bought our own jerseys, shorts, shoes and other needs. We played in a space of the old Earl School building, then unfinished. The walls were rough tile block and only the sub-floor had been laid. It was unheated. We played the towns of Enderlin, Hankinson, Milnor and Lidgerwood. Going to all by train except Lidgerwood, to get there we went by bobsled. We more or less coached ourselves; however, Mr. J.G. Matney, then the Superintendent, accompanied us to keep us in order." Mr., Enochson viewed the championship game on a Williston TV channel. What a change in lifestyle from the time he played basketball in Wyndmere. He has since passed away.

Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith a teacher at the YMCA International training school in Massachusetts. Dr. Naismith wanted to relive the boredom of his students during winter physical education classes. He had 2 fruit baskets nailed to both ends of a gym, found a soccer ball and set out some rules witch are some of the basic rules today. Dr. Naismith was born in Canada in 1861, and lived long enough to see the game he invented for the first time. The first game was played in a basement gymnasium. There was a stepladder to retrieve the ball from the fruit basket. The basic court dimensions are usually about 92 ft (28 m) long and 50 ft (15 m). Any player making illegal body contact with an opposing player is assessed a foul; the opposing team may be given possession of the ball, or an opposing player awarded free throws at the basket from the foul line. Each made foul shot is worth one point. Players who exceed the foul limit (usually five, but six in the NBA) are disqualified from the game. International and collegiate basketball games have two 20-min halves, professionals play four 12-min quarters, and high schoolers play four 8-min quarters. Referees whistle most non-foul (which is non body contact) violations against the offensive team. Here's a quick overview of the types of non-foul violations that a referee can call:

Basketball News Roster SchedulesResults Archives HISTORY OF ST. MARY'S BASKETBALL Not all the noise in basketball at Orchard Lake was being raised by the St. Mary's College varsity. The high school boys had their say too. In fact, they beat the College to the punch by two days as far as the first game ever played at the Lake is concerned. On December 17, 1913, the Prepmen easily defeated Pontiac High by a score of 21-8. Jack Karwowski led the Eaglets and Elton Rynearson was the coach. The late start of basketball may be traced to the fact that previous to this time, the spacious gymnasium was used as a dormitory for the High School boys. When the Seminarians left the old Barracks for their new quarters, the High School boys removed their belongings from the gym to the abandoned Barracks. With the gym left vacant, basketball made its appearance at St. Mary's. Basketball made rapid headway among the High School lads and before long were boasting of some very fine players and teams that were the bane of the county. The Eaglets had a 5-2 record that first year. They also defeated Pontiac Central Methodist Episcopal Church, 41-16, Detroit Cass Tech, 44-8, Detroit University School , 37-35, and the St. Louis Y, 30-13. In a return match, the Eaglets lost to Central Methodist Episcopal, 34-33, and then lost to Ypsilanti Normal (now Eastern Michigan University), 41-9.

Basketball History The NBA at 50 One hundred and seven NBA championship rings. More than 400 hundred NBA All-Star Game selections. Nearly one million points scored. So boasts the collective resume of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, selected by a blue-ribbon panel of media, former players and coaches, current and former general managers and team executives. NBA Commissioner David Stern announced the 50 Greatest Players at a press luncheon on Oct. 29, 1996, in New York City. Joining Stern in the unveiling of the 50 Greatest Players, which tipped off the League's season-long NBA at 50 celebration, were four prominent members of the list Wilt Chamberlain, Julius "Dr. J" Erving, George Mikan and Bill Russell. The announcement was made at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, which occupies the site of the former Commodore Hotel, where the original NBA charter was signed on June 6, 1946. Panelists were asked to select the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, without regard to position. Voters did not rank their selections and former players were not allowed to vote for themselves.

Travel Basketball History He was born in Almonte, Ontario, the eldest son of Scottish immigrants who had arrived in the area in 1851 and worked in the mining industry. Invention of basketball In 1891, while working as a physical education teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, and coaching football at McGill University, Naismith was asked to look for a way to relieve his students' boredom during indoor winter gym classes. Basketball became a popular men's sport in the United States and Canada very quickly, and spread to other countries as well. Additionally, there were several efforts to establish (under modified rules) a women's version; this met with great resistance in some circles and was consequently far slower to become truly widespread. The men's sport was officially added to the Olympic Games program at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. There, Naismith handed out the medals to three North American teams; United States, for the Gold Medal, in a game that was played outdoors in rain with Naismith's native country of Canada, for the Silver Medal, and Mexico, for their Bronze medal win. Women's basketball finally became an Olympic event in Montreal during the 1976 Summer Olympics. Previously, there had been a men's basketball competition, in connection with the 1904 Games at St. Louis, USA.

History Basketball today is a fast paced sport, played all around the world. However, it originated as a simple Physical Education game developed by a Dr. James Naismith, at Springfield College, in Massachusetts. At that time, there was a need for an indoor winter game that could keep students interested in physical training. Naismith, as well as other physical education instructors were told to experiment with their classes. This little experiment spawned basketball. At first Naismith tried a different version of football where the students were told to tackle their opponents by grabbing the runner above the waist and holding him down. The students did not like it. Naismith then developed the game of basketball, in the year 1891. Naismith had two peach baskets attached to the balcony at the ends of the gymnasium. They happened to be 10 feet high, which has not changed.
