      Abstract
Comparing the source of a commodity with the social levels of the people amongst whom it is found can reveal important aspects of social structure. This case study of a Maya community, using archaeological and ethnographic data, shows that pine and pine charcoal was procured at a distance and distributed unevenly in settlements. The researchers deduce that this commodity was not freely available in the marketplace, but was subject to political control. Keywords: Maya, pine, paleoethnobotany, exchange, political economy, Belize

THE ANCIENT MAYA
The ancient city of Cahal Pech In the the sixteenth century, the Spaniards disembarked on this sacred Mayan territory. In contrast to their knowledge of the developed civilizations encountered in North Mexico and Peru, the Spaniards saw the Maya as disorganized. Their search for treasures in this newly discovered area now appeared easier than they had anticipated, and the Spanish conquest shattered what was left of the ancient Maya culture. In their journey to colonize the lands of La Ruta Maya, Christianity was spread. Hundreds of friars were brought along and scattered throughout the area to convert as many of the "uncivilized" Maya people as possible. COLONIALISM Supreme Court Building With great fortunes being made from the forests of Belize, the dangerous life of the Baymen soon brought about great apprehension in the camps. Apart from worrying about poisonous snakes, deadly tropical diseases and the discomfort of working amongst clouds of mosquitoes, there was the predominant threat of the Spanish raids of the timber camps, which occurred throughout the seventeenth century.

History
The first inhabitants in what is now Belize who developed a succinct culture were the Maya. Belize was an important part in the great Mayan Empire. The Maya Empire was possibly the most sophisticated civilization in the ancient Americas. Including modern day southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras, the Mayas reached their peak in the 6th, 7th, and 8th centuries AD. However, by the 14TH Century this once great civilization mysteriously declined. By the time the Spanish arrived in the 16TH Century, Maya presence was barely felt.

A Brief History of Belize
The first people of Belize were the Maya. Over a million people once lived in the area we now call Belize. The first European settlers to Belize were British pirates who used Belize as a base from which they raided Spanish ships (1850's) "Treaty of Madrid", outlaws piracy, the pirates had to find an honest living. They soon found a new treasure in the logwood trade. The settlement was established and the new settlers were called the Baymen Spain laid claim to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and the area now known as Belize No Spanish colonies were ever established in the area of Belize, still Spain never liked the idea of British squatters in her land and this led to frequent wars with the Spanish and settlers The most famous of these was the battle of St. George's Caye (key) (where the majority of the settlers lived) where the Baymen soundly defeated the Spanish

A Brief History of Belize
HISTORY
The country of Belize was first inhabited by the Maya Indians who had an incredibly advanced civilization. They had their own writing called glyphs and their own calendar. The Mayas were also skilled mathematicians. They were the first culture to discover the concept of zero. They were also great architects. They built massive temples, cities, and palaces. The cities were well-planned and the temples were shaped like pyramids. Tikal, located in Guatemala, was the largest Maya city ever built and included five pyramids. The Mayas were also skilled astronomers. They studied the stars and learned to tell when the rainy season would come.
The great Mayan civilization, which had lasted 1,000 years, began to decline around the year of 900 A.D. It is unknown why the Mayan civilization ended, but there are many theories. One is that the population of the Mayas grew too great. With a lack of food and possible internal fighting, the civilization fell apart.
There followed a period of occupation by Indian tribes, then 100 years of Belize being the hideout for pirates. These pirates took advantage of the many Cayes of the coast of Belize. Then around 1650, these pirates started to log the mahogany and logwood forests of Belize. These loggers came to be known as baymen. The pirates used the labor of black slaves to log the wood and then sent it to England.

Home Study Abroad Belize The Maya civilization spread over Belize between 1500 BC and AD 300 and flourished until about AD 900. The first Europeans arrived in the area in the early 16th century and settlement began with British privateers and shipwrecked English seamen as early as 1638. The origin of the name Belize is not clear, but one explanation is that it derives from the Spanish pronunciation of Wallace which is the name of the pirate who created the first settlement in Belize in 1638. Another possibility is that the name is from the Maya word belix, meaning "muddy water", applied to the Belize River. The early "settlement of Belize in the Bay of Honduras" grew from a few habitations located at Belize Town and St George's Caye into a de-facto colony of the United Kingdom during the late 18th century. In the early 19th century the settlement was called British Honduras, and in 1862 it became a Crown Colony. Hurricane Hattie inflicted significant damage upon Belize in 1961. The government decided that a coastal capital city lying below sea level was too risky. Over several years, the British colonial government designed a new capital, Belmopan, at the exact geographic center of the country, and in 1970 began slowly moving the governing offices there. British Honduras became a self-governing colony in January 1964 and was renamed Belize in June 1973; it was the United Kingdom's last colony on the American mainland. George Price led the country to full independence on 21 September 1981 after delays caused by territorial disputes with neighboring Guatemala, which did not formally recognize the country until 1992.

HISTORY
The Mayan civilization spread into the area of Belize between 1500 BC and AD 300 and flourished until about AD 1200. Several major archeological sites notably Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha, and Xunantunich reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was begun by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period was also marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century, but Belize was not formally termed the Colony of British Honduras until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981.

Like most of the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize was part of the Mayan Kingdom from 300 B.C. to A.D. 900. Close by Belize’s Inland, ruins of the vast Mayan civilization protrude from the depths of the rain forests. Spanish conquistadors arrived in the 16th century but were lured away by the immense quantities of gold found in Mexico making room for the British. Though Belize gained its’ independence in 1981, English is still the official language, and elements of British culture are intermingled with those of the Caribbean.
