    Bermuda is a British Overseas Territory with a high degree of internal self-government. The official head of state is the Queen, who appoints a Governor to represent her in Bermuda. The Governor is responsible for the police, external affairs, internal security and defence. The current Governor, Sir Richard Gozney, has held office since December 2007. The House of Assembly consists of 36 members elected by eligible voters in a general election (held at least every 5 years). The leader of the political party winning the most seats in the House of Assembly is appointed Premier and is asked by the Governor to form a government (i.e. Cabinet). The largest minority political party becomes the Opposition with its own Leader and Shadow Cabinet. The Senate has 11 members; 5 of whom are appointed by the Governor on advice of the Premier, 3 by the Leader of the Opposition, and 3 by the Governor. To become law, legislation must be passed by the House of Assembly and approved by the Senate and Governor. There are two major political parties in Bermuda; the United Bermuda Party (UBP) and the Progressive Labour Party (PLP). The PLP won the most recent elections held in December 2007. The current Premier is Dr Ewart Brown.

    Bermuda Government Bermuda government has a high degree of internal self-government and is a British Overseas Territory. The queen is the official head of the state, and appoints a Bermuda Governor to represent her. The governor is accountable for the police, internal security, defence, and external affairs. The present Governor of Bermuda is Sir John Vereker, who has held office since April of 2002.
    The firs official governor of Bermuda was Richard Moore who arrived in 1612 aboard the “Plough” and represented the Virginia Company. In 1648, Britain assumed control of Bermuda government affairs after the Somers Island Company was dissolved, sending out Governors on a continuing basis as the official representative of the crown. In 1701, the Silver Oar, an emblem of Admiralty authority was brought by Governor Bennett to Bermuda and initiated the practice of placing it before himself during meetings of the Governor’s Council. In 1721, the Silver Oar was bought by the Bermuda Government.
    In 1799, the Turk’s Island which have been a long center of Bermuda’s salt trade and where Bermuda, was seized by the Government of the Bahamas that greatly crippled Bermuda’s economy. In 1815, for the first time in Hamilton, the Parliament assembles it meeting in the Town Hall until 1826, thereafter the sessions were moved to the Sessions House on Parliament Hill and has been its location ever since. The year 1944 gave women the right to vote in Bermuda government’s elections.

The Bermudian Government is consulted on any international negotiations affecting the territory. Bermuda participates, through British delegations, in the UN and some of its specialized and related agencies. Government Structure Queen Elizabeth II is head of state and is represented in Bermuda by a governor, whom she appoints. Internally, Bermuda has a parliamentary system of government.
