Bhutan is the only country to maintain Mahayana Buddhism in its Tantric Vajrayana form as the official religion. The main practicing schools are the state sponsored Drukpa Kagyupa and the Nyingmapa. Buddhism transects all strata of society, underpinning multiple aspects of the culture. Indeed, religion is the focal point for the arts, festivals and a considerably above average number of individuals. The presence of so many monasteries, temples and stupas, monks and tulkus (reincarnations of high lamas) is indicative of the overarching role religion plays throughout the nation.
Although the Shabdrung is regarded as the founder of the nation, the secular realm has achieved an unprecedented degree of unity under the influential guidance of a Twentieth Century monarchy. Within a cultural context where the spiritual and temporal spheres are intimately connected, political leadership remains interpreted as divinely determined. The royal family traces its roots to the great Sixteenth Century saint Pema Lingpa, and the present monarch still enjoys a god-like status throughout much of his Kingdom. The Forth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck as the head of state now rules the Kingdom, with the throne retaining its position as the fulcrum of the political system.

Bhutanese Culture Bhutanese language and literature, the arts and crafts, ceremonies and events and basic social and cultural values draw their essence from religious teachings. Therefore most of the Bhutanese religious art and architecture is consecrated and imbibed with the spirits of deities and saints that it depicts. The Bhutanese also see the building and decorating of temples and painting of religious figures as a merit making activity. Its destruction would mean the escalation of spiritual danger and disturbances to the peace and prosperity of self and the country. The tradition of fine art is alive today, manifested, for example in products like the Thangkas, and the exquisite traditional painting is also visible on the monasteries and houses, skillfully enhancing the architecture.

CULTURE - BHUTAN
Bhutan is the last Mahayana Buddhist Kingdom, and the teachings of this school of Buddhism are a living faith among its people. The air of spirituality is pervasive even in the urban centres where the spinning of prayer wheels, the murmur of mantras and the glow of butter lamps in the houses are still important features of everyday life. The most striking physical features of Bhutan are its architecture - the characteristic style and colour of every building and house in the kingdom is a distinct source of aesthetic pleasure. The Dzongs themselves - imposing 17th century structures built on a grand scale without the help of any drawings and held without a single nail - are outstanding examples of the best Bhutanese architecture. Bhutan's art and paintings are also important aspects of Bhutanese culture and they depict the spiritual depth of Bhutanese life. Whether it is on a wall, or one of the renowned Thangkhas or murals, painters use vegetable dyes to give their work the subtle beauty and warmth seen nowhere else in the world.

Bhutan Cultural Tour
Cultural tours give visitors a deep insight into a unique Himalayan culture, one that is finding a precarious balance between the ancient world and the global village. The Bhutanese are a friendly, warm and confident people whose rural roots are slowly giving way to rapid urbanization. You can observe this transition as you drive or trek through villages, and spend time exploring the towns. Bhutan’s traditional culture in the way of the cuisine, traditional dress and textiles, and the arts and crafts are still very much a way of daily life.

India Bhutan Culture The culture Bhutan is among the oldest, most carefully guarded and well preserved cultures in the world. Bhutan's culture is the only highlight of this small and less developed country. Bhutan has three main ethnic groups: the Sharchop in the east, which originated from the tribes of northern Burma and northeast India; the Ngalops in the west, who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan after migrating from Tibet; and the Lhotsampas in the south, originally belonging to Nepal. Bhutan has a population of around 700,000. Thimpu, the capital of Bhutan is one of the large towns in Bhutan. The major profession of the people of Bhutan is farming, who live in small rural villages. These villages are secluded and is accessible only by foot. But now, as the people are getting educated, they are migrating to towns in search of other occupations. Dzongkha is the official language of Bhutan, but many regions in Bhutan still retain their native dialects due to their isolation. As people are receiving education, especially those in urban areas, are getting more familiar with the English language, which is also the medium of instruction in Bhutan.

Information Culture Tours Trekking Most Bhutanese people belong to the Mongoloid Race. While the national language is "Dzongkha", different regions speak seperate dialects, such as Nepali among the settlers of Nepali origin in the south. However, in the government, alongside "Dzongkha" , English is commonly used, and therefore its usage is quite wide. The male dress is the robe like "gho" worn at knee length and the women wear the "kira" at ankle length. As buddhism is the state religion, almost all Bhutanese follow the Buddhist faith. The state maintains a large clergy whose residence is provided in the many "dzongs" or castle fortresses which served as centres of religious and cultural activities and the seat of civil authority.
