In accordance with its traditional functions in the fields of biochemisty, medicine and biology, the main focal points of research at the Interfaculty Institute for Biochemistry (IFIB) are to a large extent concentrated on issues which show a close relation to medicine, pharmacology, cell and molecular biology, and microbiology. The Interfaculty Institute for Biochemistry is located on the Schnarrenberg between the Crona Hospitals, the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, and the "BG" Hospital. One third of the Institute belongs to the Faculty of Medicine and two thirds to the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy.

Biochemisty and Molecular Biology Education
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education (BAMBED) is a journal published by Wiley on behalf of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology . The journal is linked to the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
BAMBED publishes papers about education and education issues. The Editors-in-Chief are Donald Voet and Judith Voet. I happen to be on the editorial board and that's why I'm blogging about this journal. More people need to know about it.
Here are some of the articles in this month's issue to give you an idea of the sorts of things that educators are concerned about.
Adele J. Wolfson Biochemistry and undergraduate liberal education (p 167-168)
Vicky Minderhout, Jennifer Loertscher Lecture-free biochemistry: A Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Approach (p 172-180)
Brian J. Rybarczyk, Antonio T. Baines, Mitch McVey, Joseph T. Thompson, Heather Wilkins A case-based approach increases student learning outcomes and comprehension of cellular respiration concepts (p 181-186)

Teaching
The Department has teaching responsibilities on every year of the undergraduate MBBS Graduate Entry MBBS and BSc Biomedical Science courses, including lectures, tutorials, project supervision, organisation of modules and examinations. It also contributes to the course. The Intercollegiate MSc in Medical Immunology of London University is also co-ordinated from the Department. Professor Clemens is Course Director of the BSc Biomedical Science course and Professor Johnstone is Chair of Examiners. Several members of the Division act as external examiners for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at various universities.
Clinical
The Division provides a complete clinical immunology laboratory service. The Joint Effort Appeal will support the establishment of the St George’s Arthritis Centre on a prime site in a central location in the Hospital.
Research
The Division houses several research groups working on the cellular and molecular basis of human disease. Research interests include applications of magnetic resonance spectroscopy to cancer, studies on cell growth regulation and apoptosis, signal transduction, nitric oxide metabolism, oncogenesis, autoimmunity, molecular virology, biosynthesis and actions of interferons, protein phosphorylation, transcriptional and translational control of gene expression, DNA enzymology and molecular genetics, antibiotic and anti-tumour drug resistance, muscle hypertrophy, toxin-induced membrane ion channels and scanning ion conductance microscopy.

Biochemistry-Protein Sequences
Living organisms use the same 20 amino acids to make their proteins. In addition, all life uses the same DNA triplet codes. All life uses ATP as its usable form of energy. This supports the idea that all life has descended from a common ancestor. During the long history of life on earth, the protein sequences of various molecules have slowly changed. Organisms that are very closely related will have few or no changes in their protein sequences. The protein that makes up cytochrome C in the mitochondria is composed of over 100 amino acids. Some of the amino acids in this protein change over long periods of time. We find that comparing these sequences in living organisms today will reveal evolutionary relationships. For example, two living species who shared a common ancestor 500 million years ago will have more differences in their amino acids sequences than two species who shared a common ancestor 10 million years ago. Use the table below to answer the following: 1. Which organism below is the most distantly related to humans?

Taylor where he learned transient kinetic methods. He joined the University of Texas at Austin in 1998 after having served on the faculty of Penn State University as the Paul Berg Professor of Biochemistry. He is currently the Roger J. Williams Centennial Professor of Biochemistry as a member of the Department of Chemistry of Biochemistry and of the Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology. He is the recipient of the Pfizer Award in Enzyme Chemistry, the Penn State Faculty Scholar Medal and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Dr. Johnson's research is focused on the examination of DNA and RNA polymerases involved in the treatment of viral infections, and mechanisms for force production by molecular motors. He has designed and built instruments for transient kinetic analysis and made them available through his company, KinTek Corporation that he founded in 1987. He has established the mechanistic basis for DNA polymerase selectivity during polymerization using modern kinetic methods that he developed. His recent work has shown that the toxicity of nucleoside analogs used to treat AIDS is correlated with their rates of incorporation by the mitochondrial DNA polymerase.
