A Definition Edward T. Woodruff has experience in Biomedical devices. This information sheet is for your interest and edification. Please see Home and Accomplishments to learn more about our performance results and contributions. The Grace Research Division was developing technology in the Biomedical Engineer arena in the 1990's. This brought Edward T. Woodruff into the sphere of the Biomedical Engineer. The projects that we worked on included the artificial pancreas, the LDL device and the LAD device. These products used hollow fiber membranes to separate the human's blood flow from the (biologically) active components on the shell side of the membrane. The artificial pancreas idea was to be an implantable that would generate insulin for diabetics. The LDL device would be outside the body and used to remove Cholesterol from the blood stream. The LAD device was explored to assist cancer patients whose liver function was in bad shape. The biomedical engineer applies engineering principles and procedures for design to problems of a medical nature in humans. The biomedical engineer covers the disciplines of biochemical engineer, biomechanical engineer and bioelectrical engineer. All of these disciplines make up the field of the biomedical engineer.

Careers and companies associated with biotechnology have grown significantly in number over that last two decades. In addition to a degree in life science, jobs require education and experience with mathematics, computers and software, as well as lab-related technologies. Many workers will require additional training. A biomedical engineer might work to calibrate and maintain equipment in a hospital or a biotechnology company or may be involved in the research and development of pharmaceuticals, diagnostic equipment, or other medical devices.

39. What Types Of Jobs Do Engineers Do?

http://www.pitt.edu/~dal74/jobs.html
What types of jobs do engineers do?
Genetic Engineer
Genetic engineers look at bioengineering from “the microscopic level,” so as to “intervene [disease processes] at very specific sites”[1] Genetic alteration, the new phenomenon that was never possible until recent years, has brought about it's share of new, previously unprecedented problems. Events that were never thought possible, much less thought of at all, are now becoming a reality. The alteration of genes in organisms, as well as new technology, will bring about a new age of transgenic organisms, along with its share of ethical problems. Eugenics is one of the major controversies within the scope of genetic engineering. We now have the power to change our offspring prenatally. We may give our children athleticism or genius, different hair, or eye coloration; the range of changes is nearly endless. This presents a formidable problem for the bioengineer, is it really for human's to decide what our appearance, or our talents should be?
Tissue Engineer
A tissue engineer looks at engineering from a microscopic venue. THey will often study regenerative medicine and stem cells(for the production of tissue). They are involved in making artificially created organs, such as the bioartificial liver. It is "an interdisciplinary field that applies the principles of engineering and life science toward the development of biological substitues that restore, maintain, or improve tissue function or a whole organ"[2], according to Langer and Vacanti.
