    Habitat Priorities in Connecticut
This morning Sphere linked to an interesting article in the Courant about a biologist conducting a multi-year census of bird populations in Connecticut . One of the more interesting findings is that the state's resident bird population shifts from northern Connecticut to southern Connecticut during the winter. As a result he argues that coastal forest habitats are the most important habitat types to preserve.
"What it tells us is the principal winter reservoir of our species is coastal forests," Craig said. "And those are the ones that are most under siege from developers."
In fact, Craig argues that, with only so much money available for land preservation, it is the forests of Southern New England, coastal and inland, that ought to get all the attention, even if it means abandoning efforts to preserve other habitats like prairies or marshes....

About the Trail: This trail is a highway-based trail (approximately 300 miles) which unifies and connects 88 birding sites along the Lake Champlain shoreline and uplands in Vermont and New York into a cohesive and marketable unit. A high quality full color map and guide identifies birding sites throughout the Lake Champlain Basin and provides information about the sites and tips for better birding. Uniform way-finding signs are installed to identify each site as part of the birding trail. Interpretive signs will also be placed at sites to help reveal to visitors various natural and cultural history themes and messages. Other enhancements being constructed at some sites include boardwalks, viewing blinds, and platforms. Goal of the Trail: To make Lake Champlain and surrounding communities in New York and Vermont a premier national destination for birding, increasing nature tourism in the Lake Champlain Region, and conveying the value of conservation and recreation to community leaders and landowners. Whereby, attracting visitors who will spend money on birding and travel needs and tools. Who is coordinating the Lake Champlain Birding Trail?

LONG ISLAND

The cry goes out: "THE OSPREY ARE RETURNING!"
And so begins springtime for birders.
We made it through the winter months and are saying good-bye to our beautiful winter friends, the waterfowl. However, here come the Warblers! Those absolutely beautiful birds that are a real challenge to focus the binoculars on and to identify. But they are certainly worth the effort. Warbler colors are a joy to behold hidden in the tops of the budding trees. And they certainly do stay at the tops of those trees, giving all of us that well known 'warbler neck" syndrome.
There are many wonderful places to view warblers on Long Island. Do you think it's the warblers that drive us to walk the woods, or just the wonderful spring weather? In either case, grab those binocs and GO BIRDING!!!
