Birdy Backyard
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher
There were some enjoyable feathered surprises in our backyard today. After finishing a few important projects in my office that required the computer, I spent the rest of the day on our deck listening (and sometimes watching) for birds while reading Bridget Stutchbury's book, “ Silence of the Songbirds ” (recommended reading, by the way). A Magnolia Warbler first heard very early this morning was present. I never did get to see it, but judging by the direction of its songs, the warbler was pretty busy doing laps around our yard most of the day. The only other warbler present was an American Redstart . Then another song caught my attention and I recognized its peeup peeup notes almost immediately - it was a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher . If my recollection is correct, this is the first time we've ever had one in our backyard. Hours passed before I finally decided to document the flycatcher and hauled out the digiscoping gear, capturing it in late afternoon light.

Welcome to Nebraska Birding Trails
An online bird-watching guide to Nebraska
Ask almost any American birder to associate Nebraska with a single bird species, and the likely response will be "cranes!" It is true that Nebraska’s Platte Valley annually hosts the largest concentration of sandhill cranes occurring anywhere in the world, a half-million or so, and is the most often used stopover point for whooping cranes between their wintering and breeding grounds. Furthermore, Nebraska’s vast interior Sandhills region, the size of several New England states combined, hosts many increasingly rare grassland birds. Its northwestern Pine Ridge country is a Rocky Mountain ecosystem in miniature, with golden eagles, prairie falcons, and many western forest birds. Our Niobrara and Platte Valleys are the best documented meeting places and hybrid zones of eastern and western North American bird faunas, and the Missouri Valley forests ring each spring and summer with the voices of such eastern birds as scarlet tanagers, whip-poor-wills, and chuck-will-widows. We sincerely hope the over 400 public-access birding sites described here will bring you to Nebraska, where both the horizons and the birding opportunities are endless.

Birding in Cincinnati
Although it's not a prime destination for traveling birders, Cincinnati provides plenty of interesting birding opportunities. This web site is intended to help both local and visiting birders find birds in this area. But this web site is not just for birders, it is also written by birders. Although I've set up the framework for the site, much of the content has been written by others. The sightings log and the message board depend almost entirely on your input. And a number of entire pages have been contributed by others. I hope you enjoy your visit here on the web site; and I hope you enjoy exploring the Cincinnati area looking for birds. If you live in the area, you might want to consider joining the Cincinnati Bird Club Comments? Suggestions?

Birding in Texas
What is the appeal? Why do so many people enjoy this activity? While each individual birder may focus on different aspects of the pastime, I think all will agree, birding fulfills many of our basic criteria for what makes for good outdoor recreation. Birds appeal to our sense of aesthetics. Birds are beautiful and dazzling to the eye. Their complex behavior is intriguing and their songs are varied, evocative and very pleasing to the ear. Birds occur in a wide variety of places and are abroad both night and day. Birdwatching is something you can do while doing other things, working in the backyard, tending the garden, walking or jogging in the park, while at work or from a kitchen window. Birds can brighten up the day and break the monotony of a dull routine.

Why Birding Sonoma County Has Been Quiet Lately - LBAM Spray
Daily Local Birder ... 5 Comments The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), as you may now have heard, has determined to violate the California Constitution and aerially spray a combination of never-before-tested pesticides, carcinogens, mutagens and synthetic pheromones encapsulated in particulate plastic spheres over 9 urban counties in the state, beginning June 1st of 2008. They began these egregious actions last fall in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. Following the spraying, more than 600 families reported severe illness from pesticide poisoning. In addition to this, the beautiful Monterey bay and the rest of the watershed were horrifically fouled with a toxic yellow foam that resulted in the death of at least 600 seabirds - probably more. Among these birds was the endangered Brown Pelican which is supposed to be protected by federal law. Sonoma County is not currently scheduled to be sprayed from airplanes, but Marin County is, and the drift from the spray there will absolutely get into our air, our water, our land, our bodies and the bodies of our precious wild birds and animals.
