Face Blind
By Joshua Davis Page 1 of 5 next
BILL CHOISSER WAS 48 when he first recognized himself. He was standing in his bathroom, looking in the mirror when it happened. A strand of hair fell down – he had been growing it out for the first time. The strand draped toward a nose. He understood that it was a nose, but then it hit him forcefully that it was his nose. He looked a little higher, stared into his own eyes, and saw … himself.

For most of his childhood, Choisser thought he was normal. He just assumed that nobody saw faces. But slowly, it dawned on him that he was different. Other people recognized their mothers on the street. He did not. During the 1970s, as a small-town lawyer in the Illinois Ozarks, he struggled to convince clients that he was competent even though he couldn't find them in court. He never greeted the judges when he passed them on the street – everyone looked similarly blank to him – and he developed a reputation for arrogance. His father, also a lawyer, told him to pay more attention. His mother grew distant from him. He felt like he lived in a ghost world. Not being able to see his own face left him feeling hollow.

What's the definition of blindness? How does it affect people? What causes it? Can it be prevented? ... Advice and support
What's the definition of blindness?
A person who is blind has a high degree of vision loss. Only about 18 per cent of blind people are totally blind - most can distinguish between light and dark. When someone is partially sighted, they have a less severe loss of vision. Partially sighted people can see more than blind people but less than sighted people.
How does it affect people?
Blindness can cause difficulty with everyday tasks such as cooking, dressing, reading and writing, shopping and going for a walk. The risk of physical and social isolation is greater for people who are blind or partially sighted as it can be difficult to get out and make new friends. Blindness can also be an expensive condition because of the cost of special equipment.
What causes it?

Like Dogs, Like Humans? Day Blindness In The Wirehaired Dachshund
ScienceDaily (Mar. 17, 2008) See also: Inherited photoreceptor diseases (diseases of the sensitive cells of the retina) occur naturally in both people and dogs. They comprise the most common form of inheritable retinal diseases in people, with an incidence of about 1 in 4,000. The most common form of retinal degeneration in people is that collectively called retinitis pigmentosa (RP), which is caused by an initial regression of the rods of the retina followed by a regression of the cones. In dogs, the inheritable photoreceptor diseases are generally lumped under the name of progressive retinal atrophy or PRA. Using clinical, electrophysiological and morphological studies, Ropstad showed that the dogs in one colony of day blind wirehaired dachshunds never developed normal sight in daylight and that this was due to defective development of the cones of the retina. Ropstad discovered that pupil size is abnormal in a majority of young, day blind dachshunds. These findings can be used as a clinical indicator of day blindness in young dogs with vision disturbance.

57. Don Norman's Jnd.org / Banner Blindness, Human Cognition And Web Design
Benway and Lane have studied Banner blindness (ITG Newsletter, Dec. 1998 1.3) – the fact that people tend to ignore those big, flashy, colorful banners

Banner Blindness, Human Cognition and Web Design
ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN INTERNETWORKING, MARCH 1999 Why this behavior? Why does something so big and central escape notice? Well, there is seeing and then there is seeing. I suspect the banner was indeed noticed: I suspect that people carefully scrolled past it to get it out of the way so they could search the less bold, less colorful, less salient places. The fact that the searchers missed the supposedly salient information has nothing to do with big, colorful and salience: it has to do with schemas, frameworks, and expectations. People are lawful. If they weren't, we couldn't have science of cognition. And as a cognitive scientist now applying what I have learned in a manner I once labeled "cognitive engineering," I believe that behavior does have its discoverable causes. Why banner blindness? Here is my theory. Note that this is still theory, informed, but nonetheless, still untested. If the banner blindness paper tells us anything, it is not to accept theory until it has been tested through observation. Still, the theory seems pertinent, relevant, and consistent with a large body of existing knowledge, so let me try it out on you. Once again I invoke schema theory. When one puts critical links in a banner, that breaks with established convention, breaks the schema. The human attentional system is superb at homing in on areas of importance. This is human efficiency at its best, using very little information to decide where best to focus. Usually this behavioral pattern works well. But when something doesn't fit the established schema, it is apt to be missed. This is the cause of numerous perceptual tricks and illusions, of numerous errors. I have used it as an explanation for some type of human error. Designers who break out of the established genre thereby do so at considerable risk: information outside of a person's schema is apt to be overlooked.

60. Are You Color Blind?
Color blindness comes as a result of a lack of one or more of the types of color receptors. Most color perception defects are for red or green or both.
http://www.everwonder.com/david/colorblind.html
Are You Color Blind? There are three types of color receptors in our eyes, red, green and blue. We also have black and white receptors. They are more sensitive than the color receptors, that is why we have poor color
perception in the dark. Color blindness comes as a result of a lack of one or more of the types of color receptors. Most color perception defects are for red or green or both. About 10% of males have a color perception defect, but this is rare in females. Red-green color blindness is a result of a lack of red receptors. Another form of color blindness yellow-blue is the second most common form, but it's extremely rare. It is also possible to have the color receptors missing entirely, which would result in black and white vision. Check for yourself and your children for color perception defects here.
