    Political and legal situation
The Botswana press as we know it today took shape after independence in 1966. Since that time it has mainly been the monopoly of the government, but it seems to be diversifying slowly as the twenty-first century looms. In the constitution of Botswana, freedom of expression is respected and protected. In section 12 of the constitution it is stated: Except with his consent no person shall be hindered in the enjoyment of his freedom of expression, that is to say, freedom to hold opinions without interference, freedom to receive ideas and information without interference, freedom to communicate ideas and information without interference (whether the communication be to the public generally or to any person or class of persons) and freedom from interference with his correspondence. In other words, the constitution upholds the right of all persons, including the press, to freedom of expression. Since independence, Botswana has scrupulously observed these provisions, and so far there has been no attempt to stifle free speech. There is no general censorship in Botswana, and as a result, people have been able to publish almost anything, including criticism of the government.
