Worldwide, breast cancer is by far the most common cancer amongst women, with an incidence rate more than twice that of colorectal cancer and cervical cancer and about three times that of lung cancer. However breast cancer mortality worldwide is just 25% greater than that of lung cancer in women. In 2005, breast cancer caused 502,000 deaths worldwide (7% of cancer deaths; almost 1% of all deaths).

BRCA Genes and Your Breast Cancer Risk
    Medical Author:
Medical Editor: Barbara K. Hecht, PhD BRCA, known as the "breast cancer gene," is one of several genetic mutations (alterations in the body's genetic material) that have been associated with the development of breast and ovarian cancer . Changes in two genes, known as BRCA1 and BRCA2 (short for breast cancer 1 and breast cancer 2), can be inherited and lead to a markedly increased risk for developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Only about 5% of women with breast cancer are found to carry a mutated BRCA gene. Studies have confirmed that women who carry these BRCA mutations have a high risk for development of breast cancer, up to seven times that of women who do not have BRCA gene alterations. By the age of 80, women with BRCA mutations have about an 80% chance of developing breast cancer. Having a BRCA mutation also predisposes a woman to developing breast cancer at an early age. The incidence of BRCA mutation is higher in some ethnic groups, such as people of Ashkenazi (European) Jewish origin and in some populations in Iceland, the Netherlands, and the Balkans.

Medical Reviewing Editor:
Families with Breast Cancer
Medical Author: Carolyn Janet Crandall, MD, FACP
Medical Editor: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR Ms. G. is a 40-year-old woman with two small children. Like most women, she is concerned about her chances of developing breast cancer. She asks her doctor about her risks. Although breast cancer is a worry for most women, Ms. G. is especially worried because of a family history of breast cancer. Her mother and sister had breast cancers that were diagnosed at young ages. A woman with a family history of breast cancer has a lot of concerns. Among other things, she is thinking of her job, children, and husband, as well as how her medical insurance and health team will be able to serve her needs in the future should a crisis arise. What are the facts about families that have multiple members with breast cancer?

What is Breast Cancer? Format for Printing Main Menu What is Breast Cancer? Cancer is a group of diseases in which cells in the body grow, change, and multiply out of control. Usually, cancer is named after the body part in which it originated; thus, breast cancer refers to the erratic growth and proliferation of cells that originate in the breast tissue. A group of rapidly dividing cells may form a lump or mass of extra tissue. These masses are called tumors. Tumors can either be cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). Malignant tumors penetrate and destroy healthy body tissues. A group of cells within a tumor may also break away and spread to other parts of the body. Cells that spread from one region of the body into another are called metastases The term breast cancer refers to a malignant tumor that has developed from cells in the breast. The breast is composed of two main types of tissues: glandular tissues and stromal (supporting) tissues. Glandular tissues house the milk-producing glands (lobules) and the ducts (the milk passages) while stromal tissues include fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast. The breast is also made up of lymphatic tissue-immune system tissue that removes cellular fluids and waste.

Hundreds of years ago in an Ashkenazic Jewish community a DNA mutation occurred which would have an impact on thousands of Jews in the twentieth century. A Jewish baby conceived from a mutated sperm or egg became the ancestor who transmitted a faulty version of the breast cancer gene, BRCA1, to his or her children and to perhaps dozens of subsequent generations. Today many thousands of Ashkenazic Jewish women and men around the world carry that mutated gene. Most female descendants who have inherited the mutated BRCA1 have developed or will develop breast or ovarian cancer. A mutation in a second gene, BRCA2, arose in the Ashkenazic population as a result of another independent genetic event - occurring at another time and place. Women who have inherited that mutation also have greatly increased risk for breast cancer. It is estimated that 1 out of every 50 Ashkenazic Jews carries a mutant copy of either BRCA1 or BRCA2. Although other types of mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 do exist in the general population, the two specific mutations associated with Ashkenazic Jews have not been found in the non-Jewish population. Most startling is that women who inherit mutant forms of BRCA1 may have up to an 85% risk of contracting breast cancer and a 44% risk of contracting ovarian cancer in their lifetimes. This compares with an overall 12% risk of breast cancer and 1% risk of ovarian cancer in the general population.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in women. It is estimated that in 2006, there will be 212,920 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women and 1,720 cases in men. The risk factors for breast cancer include age, high breast tissue density, confirmed hyperplasia, long menstrual cycles, use of oral contraceptives, having first child after the age of 30, never having children, inherited genetic mutations (BRCA 1 and BRCA 2), personal or family history of breast cancer, and having received high-dose radiation therapy to the chest for medical treatment. Treatment options for breast cancer may vary depending on tumor size, stage of the disease, whether the cancer is newly diagnosed or recurrent/refractory, other medical conditions, and the patient's treatment preference, and should be discussed with the patient's physician. Breast Cancer Clinical Trials The Center for Cancer Research (CCR), NCI's largest division doing research on campus, conducts breast clinical trials at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Md. NCI accepts referrals to breast clinical trials conducted in Bethesda, Md., through its Clinical Trials Referral Office (formerly the Clinical Studies Support Center) at 1-888-NCI-1937 (1-888-624-1937). NCI is currently conducting the following trials for patients with breast cancer. Click on the trials below for additional details, including a summary of eligibility criteria, treatment plan, and information on how to contact the principal investigators and their staff directly.

You may have heard about special events, like walks or races, to raise money for breast cancer research. Or maybe you've seen people wear those little pink ribbons on their clothes. Breast (say: brest ) cancer is a common cancer among women. It occurs rarely in men and it doesn't affect kids. But kids might want to learn about it because they know someone who has it or because they want to learn how to check for it when they are older.
    What Is Breast Cancer?
The human body is made of tiny building blocks called cells. Your body creates them, replacing those that die with new ones. Usually, the body creates healthy, normal cells that do just what they're supposed to do. This includes cells in the breasts, the two rounded areas on the front of the chest. But if a cell changes into an abnormal, sometimes harmful form, it can divide quickly over and over again without dying, making many, many copies of itself. When this happens, a tumor , abnormal body cells grouped together in the form of a mass or lump, can start to form and grow.

February 12 th Re: Report Finds Half of Breast Cancer Causes May Be Environmental (story below) My intention in writing commentaries about current news stories is to share my opinions about how we are being manipulated by the media and science. This story clearly demonstrates how we are being distracted. Also, consider this - Even with the growing awareness about toxic chemicals, I see no evidence that their use is being reduced or eliminated. It is up to each individual to do their utmost to change their own environment in order to reduce or eliminate their own exposure to toxic chemicals. If we continue to play this blame game, we may cloud out the real reasons why we are so sick today. Yes, I agree that synthetic chemicals are a problem, but so is excess coffee consumption, so is excess alcohol consumption, so are processed foods and sugar, so are fad diets and so on. If we expect to get well, we need to reduce our exposure to synthetic chemicals, and introduce whole organic foods which build (rather than sabotage) our health. These foods include: raw dairy products (from pastured cows), fermented foods and drinks, animal meat from wild or pastured animals, fruits and vegetables. (For more information, be sure to read my interview with Sally Fallon in the archives.)

    Breast Cancer Deception

Every October since 1985, pink ribbons are displayed in posters, magazine advertisements, and proudly adorn women's lapels heralding Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The multitudes of runs, hikes, walks, and other fundraising events raise hundred of millions of dollars to conquer that dreaded scourge of the modern woman, breast cancer. High profile companies like Avon, Lee Denim, and Revlon have joined ranks along with the Susan G. Komen Foundation's "Race for the Cure", and the City of Hope Hospital's "Walk for Hope". Popular celebrities lead the charge. Each year, 180,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 44,000 will die of the disease. The US has one of the highest breast cancer rates in the world. Fifty years ago the incidence of Breast Cancer for a woman's lifetime risk was one in twenty. Now it has skyrocketed to one in eight. Clearly the so-called war on cancer has not even made a dent in the breast cancer epidemic as the rates continue to climb at the rate of one per cent per year.
