    The Truth About Budgeting
Myth: I don't have time to work on a budget.
Truth: You don't have time not to make a budget!
The dreaded "B" word. Budget. The only other word that starts with "B" that might generate a worse reaction in most people is the word bankruptcy.
Unfortunately, the word budget has gotten a bum rap - it is basically just a PLAN . When you budget, you're spending on paper, on purpose, before the month begins. But many people view a budget as a straight jacket that keeps them constrained. Freedom and budget just don't seem to go together.

SUPPORT Contact Home Budgeting 101 1. KEEP IT SIMPLE (AT FIRST) The best way to get started is to put together a very basic list of your monthly income (i.e. your paycheck) and expenses. Just give it your best guess. Stick to listing things you can easily identify: rent, car payment, insurance, utilities (you get the picture). As time goes by you can add more detail. 2. DETERMINE YOUR MONTHLY INCOME (after tax how much can you spend) To be effective, you must determine how much you make each month. This is not as straightforward as it seems. If you get paid once a month, it's easy just use the amount from the check. If you get paid on a different schedule use the chart below: Monthly Salary Calculation Payment Interval Multiply By Divide By each week every 2 weeks twice a month every 3 weeks If you have other sources of income other than your paycheck that you use for expenses each month (i.e. interest income, alimony, child support, other), you will want to include these sources as well. You can use the chart above to determine the monthly income from these sources as well. 3. EXPENSES

A budget is the most fundamental and most effective financial management tool available to anyone. Yes, anyone—whether you are earning thousands of dollars a year, or hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. It is extremely important to know how much money you have to spend, and where you are spending it. Budgeting and Investing are Different Topics Yes, some of your "spending" might be for investments, but there is an important distinction between creating a personal budget and deciding where to invest your extra income. A budget is the first and most important step towards maximizing the power of your money. "Though usually overlooked, setting up a good personal budget is the first step to any money management activity. Without it, you cannot control your finances and will always fall short of your goals." Mark J. Randall, Certified Financial Planner

I suppose it would be easiest to just show you an actual spending plan I drew up three years ago. (This document is an important piece of financial archaeology As you can see, I began by listing my debts in the order that I wanted to repay them. (This was before I knew about the debt snowball .) Next, I listed my expected sources of income. Finally, I brainstormed a possible plan of attack. Your spending plan
If you, too, are wary of budgets, consider using a simple spending plan to give direction to your finances. The example above is more involved than it needs to be. Most of my spending plans now are about half the size. When drafting your spending plan, be sure to do the following:
    • Project income.

    Air Issues
My annual budget-friendly trips have become a highlight of, well, my life. During the past few years I've traveled on the cheap to California several times, to Washington and Oregon and to Ireland, to name a few. I early await trip-planning season every year. And every year, I book a reward ticket on American and use my credit card rewards to keep the cost of most trips around $1,000 for a week-long expedition.
But have you tried booking flights lately? It's out of control! I'd spend the cost of my entire annual trip on airfare alone. The cost of flying to the Pacific coast has doubled since the last time I flew there, and now my miles are ridiculously difficult to redeem. We were considering a trip to Belize, but the flights cost an arm and a leg. I checked a few other destinations and the costs and mile redemptions are nuts...
This is a vacation crisis, people!

"Gender responsive budgeting (GRB) is about ensuring that government budgets and the policies and programs that underlie them address the needs and interests of individuals that belong to different social groups. Thus, GRB looks at biases that can arise because a person is male or female, but at the same time considers disadvantage suffered as a result of ethnicity, caste, class or poverty status, location and age. GRB is not about separate budgets for women or men nor about budgets divided equally. It is about determining where the needs of men and women are the same, and where they differ.
