History
In antiquity, Bulgaria, the land of Orpheus and Spartacus, belonged to the Kingdom of Macedonia. By 46 BC, the Romans had conquered the whole peninsula, which they inhabited until invasions by Thraco-Illyrian tribes left the area a devastated wasteland. Peaceful Slavic farmers grazed in during the 6th century. In 679, the Bulgars, a fierce Turkic tribe, crossed the Danube to found the First Bulgarian Empire; they then expanded south at Byzantium's expense before finally conquering Macedonia in the 9th century. The Bulgars were eventually assimilated by the more numerous Slavs, and adopted their language and way of life. In 865 a Byzantine monk who painted a picture of hell on the palace walls managed to frighten Tsar Boris I into accepting Orthodox Christianity. In 870 the Bulgarian Church became independent with its own patriarch, which encouraged Tsar Simeon (893-927) to expand his kingdom through Serbia to the Adriatic Sea. Simeon's kingdom shrank again when he overstretched his covetous hands toward the Byzantine crown. This weakened Bulgaria, making it susceptible to the Byzantine emperor, Basil II, who had the eyes of 15,000 Bulgarian soldiers put out after a decisive victory in 1014. Bulgaria passed to Byzantine rule four years later. The Second Bulgarian Empire (1185-1396) was founded after two brothers, Asen and Peter, led a general uprising against Byzantium. Swollen with renewed confidence, the new empire covered all of Thrace, Macedonia and Albania. It was gnawed away over the next two centuries by the Tatars and then the Turks. By the end of the 14th century, the Turks controlled all of Bulgaria, beginning five centuries of Ottoman rule.

BULGARIAN HISTORY The Bulgarian lands are ancient crossroads. It remembers many ancient civilizations and great peoples which wrote the pages of its turbulent history: bronze and iron spears and arrows, ruins of palaces and cities, wise words carved on rocks and stone columns, written on parchment and leather. The Thracians bequeathed us the famous tombs near Kazanluk and Sveshtari, the unique gold treasures from Panagyurishte and Rogozen. The Hellenes built the beautiful coastal towns of Apollonia, Anhialo and Messambria, and Romans - ancient Aescus, Nikopolis ad Istrum and Nove. Huns, Gothes and Averas later passes through our lands. History of Bulgaria
The Thracians have left us numerous historical monuments. The most well known of these are the tombs in the town of Kazanlak and near the village of Sveshtari; the sanctuary of Orpheus and a multitude of gold and silver treasures often exhibited in the biggest museums of the world. The Thracians were polytheists and later the Greeks borrowed part of their pantheon. Their cult of Dionissius is very interesting from a cultural point of view, since it simultaneously contradicts and intertwines with the cult to Orpheus. The ancient Bulgarians were the basic ethnic components in the structure of the Medieval Bulgarian State. Their original homeland was in Central Asia, in the mountainous region of Pamir and Hindukush. In Antiquity the ancient Bulgars founded two famous states called BULGAR and BULHARA according to some sources. As a highly developed civilization, the Bulgars had culturally dominated the territories of Central Asia for a long time. They have left the world a rich cultural heritage in the field of the philosophic understanding of the world as well as in state administration, social structure, military art, writing, linguistic culture, construction, astronomy and mathematics

Bulgaria
HISTORY
Long a crossroads of civilizations (archaeological finds date back to 4600 B.C.), Bulgaria was first recognized as an independent state in AD 681. Bulgarian Orthodox Christanity, which became a hallmark of national identity, was established in the 9th century. Bulgaria was ruled by the Byzantine Empire from 1018 to 1185 and the Ottoman Empire from 1396 to 1878. In 1879, Bulgaria adopted a democratic constitution and invited a German nobleman, Alexander of Battenburg, to be prince. In the early part of the 20th century, in an effort to gain Macedonian and other territories, Bulgaria engaged in two Balkan wars and become allied with Germany during World War I. It suffered disastrous losses as a result. The interwar period was dominated by economic and political instability and by terrorism as political factions, including monarchists and communists, struggled for influence. In World War II, Bulgaria ultimately allied again with Germany but protected its Jewish population of some 50,000 from the Holocaust. When King Boris III died in 1943, political uncertainty heightened. The Fatherland Front, an umbrella coalition led by the Communist Party, was established. This coalition backed neutrality and withdrawal from occupied territories. Bulgaria tried to avoid open conflict with the Soviet Union during the war, but the U.S.S.R. invaded in 1944 and placed the Fatherland Front in control of government. After Bulgaria's surrender to the Allies, the Communist Party purged opposition figures in the Fatherland Front, exiled young King Simeon II, and rigged elections to consolidate power. In 1946, a referendum was passed overwhelmingly, ending the monarchy and declaring Bulgaria a people's republic. In a questionable election the next year, the Fatherland Front won 70% of the vote and Communist Party leader Georgi Dimitrov became Prime Minister. In 1947, the Allied military left Bulgaria, and the government declared the country a communist state. Forty-two years of heavy-handed totalitarian rule followed. All democratic opposition was crushed, agriculture and industry were nationalized, and Bulgaria became the closest of the Soviet Union's allies. Unlike other countries of the Warsaw Pact, however, Bulgaria did not have Soviet troops stationed on its territory.

Bulgaria - an ancient land As a state established by khan Asparoukh, Bulgaria has been existing for more than 13 centuries.
The settlers During the Bronze Age the present-day Bulgarian lands were inhabited by the Thracians, mentioned for the first time by Homer. They were engaged in agriculture and stockbreeding, and left evidence of a rich culture (the Vulchitrun gold treasure). The first Thracian state unions emerged in the 11th-6th centuries BC, which flourished in the 7th-6th centuries BC. In the 1st century BC their lands were conquered by Rome, and after the 5th century AD they were incorporated in the Byzantine Empire. The Thracians were later gradually assimilated by the Slavs who settled in the Balkan Peninsula in the 6th century AD.

History
Bulgaria has a long, turbulent and fascinating history. It has been inhabited since the Stone Age and during the Bronze Age was home to Thracians. It then became part of the kingdom of Macedonia, before falling to the Romans in 46BC. By the middle of the 4th century waves of barbarian tribes flooded into the region from the east and the Roman Empire began to collapse. In 679AD the Bulgars crossed the Danube and founded the first Bulgarian Empire – this stretched right across the Balkans. The country was converted to Orthodox Christianity and fell under Byzantine rule in 1018. The second Bulgarian Empire was established by the overthrow of Byzantine rule in 1185. It lasted until 1396 when the expanding Ottoman Empire annexed the entire region. The Turks were relatively enlightened and tolerant rulers, making no attempt to convert the people to Islam or to interfere with their culture and customs. However, with the general rise of nationalism across Europe in the 19th century, the Bulgarians became restless for independence. The Turks, their empire now much weakened, responded harshly and a number of other European states, most notably Russia, rallied to the Bulgarian’s cause. The resultant Russo-Turkish war achieved limited independence for Bulgaria in 1878 – Turkey still controlled 40% of the country and the new state was something of a Russian satellite much distrusted by other European powers. The first years of the 20th century were especially dramatic and traumatic ones for Bulgaria. Caught between much bigger powers during a period of horrific and sustained upheaval, the country staggered through two Balkan Wars, followed by two World Wars. In 1945, mauled and weakened, Bulgaria fell under the influence of the Soviet Union. The country thrived between 1954 and 1989 but with the collapse of communism and the break-up of the soviet block there was a brief period of social and economic instability as Bulgaria became a democracy. Progress since then has been positive and swift – the country joined NATO in 2004 and, following a rapid process of reform, is scheduled to join the EU in 2007.

Bulgaria History Back from the wilderness
Bulgaria's most famous international successes came at the finals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, but the Balkan nation boasts a long history of participation in world football. Early years
The game was introduced to Bulgaria in the late 19th century with schoolboys said to be the first players. There was a thriving football scene in the early 20th century which led to the Bulgarian capital's first two major clubs - PFC Slavia Sofia and PFC Levski Sofia - being formed in 1913 and 1914 respectively. First international
The Bulgarian Football Union was founded in 1923 and the first international played by the national team was a friendly against Austria in Vienna on 21 May 1924 - the Bulgarians losing 6-0. Game participants
Bulgaria first entered the qualifying stages of the World Cup in 1934, but while they were always game participants, it was not until the early 1960s that they began to make an impact at the highest levels. Having taken part in the inaugural UEFA European Championship in 1960, Bulgaria successfully qualified for the finals of the 1962 World Cup in Chile. Frustrating run
However, they were to enjoy little success in their opening tournament, losing their opening games against Argentina and Czechoslovakia before regaining some composure to hold out for a goalless draw against England. It was to be the beginning of a frustrating run of results in the competition.
