Butterfly Gardening Butterfly Gardening Facts Butterfly gardens can be grown throughout the United States. There is a wide variety of both butterfly attracting (nectar) plants and host plants covering climate zones throughout the country. Butterfly gardens can range in size from a few containers placed in a sunny spot to several acres. Nectar-producing plants will attract butterflies to your garden. In order to support a full butterfly lifecycle, host plants (for laying eggs and use as a caterpillar food source) must also be present.

Population could collapse if illegal logging continues, expert warns

These satellite images made available via NASA show the Lomas de Aparicio area within Mexico's monarch butterfly preserve. The right image, taken on Feb. 23 2008, shows severe deforestation (brown areas denote lack of trees) compared with the left image, taken in 2004.
MSNBC staff and news service reports MEXICO CITY - Satellite images show illegal loggers have clear-cut large swathes of trees in the heart of a monarch butterfly reserve in Mexico, threatening the entire population with extinction, according to a leading researcher. The images show illegal loggers felled 1,100 acres of trees since 2004 in the core of a wooded park in Michoacan state where clouds of orange- and black-winged butterflies nest each winter, said Lincoln Brower, a professor emeritus of biology at Sweet Briar College in Virginia, who has studied the monarchs for 52 years. "The butterfly area can't survive if this kind of logging continues," said Brower, who also directs the preservation group that paid for the commercial satellite images, which were published by NASA online. He noted that the delicate creatures need leafy foliage to protect them from rain and cold.

You are visitor number since 17 October 1995 This is very much a work in progress. Please note that there is a great deal of variation in both the picture and specimen quality. This will (slowly) improve with time as better figures and specimens arise. We will, of course, be happy to display any of your slides of adults/ larvae here (with full credit, of course). Please note that the figures are somewhat large, around 70 - 120 K each, so slow-line downloaders beware! Butterflies Remember What They Learned as Caterpillars
By Brandon Keim Categories: Animals Brain When a caterpillar turns into a butterfly, the transformation is so radical that it's hard to believe they belong to the same species. But regardless of the new wings and body, the new diet and airborne lifestyle, butterflies remember what they learned as babies. In a study published yesterday in Public Library of Science ONE , Georgetown University biologists gave mild shocks to tobacco hornworm caterpillars while exposing the caterpillars to particular odors. After the hornworms built cocoons and emerged as moths a process that involves the reorganization of both brain and nervous system they still avoided the smells that once brought them shocks. The findings "challenge a broadly-held popular view of lepidopteran metamorphosis: that the caterpillar is essentially broken down entirely, and its components reorganized into a butterfly or moth," wrote the researchers. Led by evolutionary ecologist Martha Weiss , they suspected that larval memories, if maintained at all, would be stored in the so-called mushroom bodies areas of the brain that receive information directly from the antennae.

When you think of butterflies, the first thing that comes to mind is probably the colorful flutter of wings...but there is so much more than initially meets the eye! Take a look below at some of the fascinating things about butterflies. Send This Page To a Friend
Did you know...
...that the wings of butterflies and moths are actually transparent?
The iridescent scales, which overlap like shingles on a roof, give the wings the colors that we see. Contrary to popular belief, many butterflies can be held gently by the wings without harming the butterfly. Of course, some are more fragile than others, and are easily damaged if not handled very gently. Both butterflies and moths belong to the order lepidoptera. In Greek, this means scale wing. Above, 200x magnification of Sunset Moth Wing, showing individual scales Take a closer look at butterfly scales!

The Lepidoptera Part 1. Butterflies
Introduction Description About Colour Metamorphosis ... The Children's Butterfly Web Site
Introduction
The Butterflies and Moths are by far the most popular group of insects in both the mind of the general public and with Entomologists, there are more books on Lepidoptera, and more people collecting and working on Lepidoptera than any other insect order, everybody loves Butterflies. The Lepidoptera are one of the five great orders of insects and when all the counting has been finished will probably be fighting for 3rd place with the Diptera behind the Hymenoptera and the Coleoptera, but ahead of the Hemiptera (especially in those taxonomic organisations that split the Hemiptera into 2 orders). There are about 150 000 named species most (more than 85 percent) of which are Moths. In comparison with many other orders they are remarkable uniform in their general appearance, and for most species, and most people who are not lepidopterists, it is more effective to look at a picture guide than to use a key for their identification. The name Lepidoptera comes from the Greek 'Lepidos' a scale and 'Pteron' a wing, they are called this because their wings are covered in small scales (these are modified hairs). The common name Butterfly comes from the colloquial name for the Brimstone Gonepteryx rhamni which was known in England as 'The Butter coloured Fly'. The earliest known Lepidoptera are larval heads preserved in amber from the Cretaceous.

Though I had no desire to collect them, I did think that they could be arranged creatively and displayed as works of art. While searching for a source for these exotic creatures, I learned that commercial breeding farms exist overseas and also that the butterflies that these farms sell are of varying degrees of quality. Because I wanted the art I intended to create with these butterflies to be the very best, I insisted on acquiring only the top level; A/1 museum quality.
