Break into Butterfly Gardening!
So what is butterfly gardening really all about? Well, we’ll tell you with some basics on butterfly gardening. Hopefully this is new information you can use, not just the old stuff they used to tell you. What is butterfly gardening? Simply put butterfly gardening is the art of growing flowers and plants that will attract these colorful and magnificent creatures to our own gardens. A properly planned butterfly garden offers great joy to visitors of the garden by attracting these lovely flitting creatures for our amusement and delight. It also ensures a safe habitat for the butterflies. Deciding upon how to design your butterfly garden is just a matter of personal preference on your part. In reality, butterflies simply do not care about the style of your garden, only the plants that attract them. Typical points to consider for choosing your butterfly gardening plan are the size of your garden and the types of flowers and plants you want to grow. Pick a style of garden that appeals to you and ensure it contains the plants and flowers that appeal to the butterflies you wish to attract. As in anything else, it is important to do thorough research on exactly which plants and flowers will attract certain species of butterflies. Speaking of butterfly species, do you have an idea of what kinds you want to attract to your garden? Do you know which ones live in your area? Once you work out this decision and decide which types of butterflies you want flying around and visiting your home, then simply create your butterfly gardening plan around those species.

The Sheer Pleasure of Watching Butterflies Flit Around on a Sunny Day
Butterfly Gardens A unique and beautiful way to conserve the environment is cultivating a butterfly garden. Butterflies are some of the most beautiful, fragile creatures in nature and have sometimes been called "flying flowers." Butterflies pollinate flower, and both adults and larvae are an important food source for birds, bats, and other wildlife. There are nearly 700 species of butterflies in North America, and in the Chicago area, common butterfly species include the Black Swallowtail, Cabbage White, Eastern Tailed Blue, Spring Azure, the Monarch and many others (Owens, 1991).

Feedback Butterfly gardening has become very popular, and is currently a fad. It is important to realize that there are two different kinds of butterfly gardens: a butterfly flower garden for nectaring adults, and a butterfly hostplant garden of plants that are hostplants for butterfly caterpillars.
A butterfly flower garden has lots of flowers whose blooms attract butterflies, but the reader has to be aware that the butterflies attracted are those that just happen to fly about the neighborhood and are passing by, and may stop to feed on your garden flowers, then the butterfly will fly away to somebody else's yard. A butterfly hostplant garden consists of plants that are hostplants of local butterflies, and again the butterflies that will be attracted are only those that are present in the neighborhood, so if a female wanders into your yard when she is ready to oviposit she may lay egg(s) on your plants, and the caterpillars may grow to maturity, pupate, and the adults will emerge, but then the young adults will spend at most little time in your yard, perhaps feeding on your flowers, before flying away to somebody else's yard. As long as the reader understands these limitations of butterfly gardens, an enjoyable garden may be constructed.
Butterfly Flower Garden One of the best ways to find what flowers attract butterflies and grow in your area, is just to wander about the neighborhood and check out the flowers other people grow that attract butterflies, then plant these flowers (maybe they'll even give you hints on growing them). Listed below are flowers that are popular. Of course different butterflies have different preferences, and butterflies with a long proboscis often visit long flowers whereas butterflies with a short proboscis only visit the flowers with a short flower tube.

Landscaping Your Garden Butterfly Gardening What is butterfly gardening? Simply put butterfly gardening is the art of growing flowers and plants that will attract these colorful and dainty creatures to your garden. Delight your family and visitors with beautiful butterflies, but be sure to create a safe habitat for them. If you own cats rethink your plans, because it would be a shame to attract these lovely insects to their death. The design your butterfly garden is a matter of personal preference. Typical points to consider are the size of your garden and the types of flowers and plants you want to grow. Pick a style of garden that appeals to you, but ensure it also contains the plants and flowers that appeal to the butterflies you wish to attract. It is important to find out which plants and flowers will attract the species of butterflies. that live in your area. This information can be found at the local library To create the kind of environment that they find attractive, you will also need water of some kind. A birdbath will look attractive and keep the butterflies up off the ground, away from stray cats or mischievous puppies. A shallow dish on a post or hung in a tree will do just as well.

For more information and resources about pollinator conservation or to download this information sheet as a PDF file, visit the Xerces Society's web site, www.xerces.org "Butterflies and moths are the flowers of the air." Edward O. Wilson To create a landscape that is inviting for butterflies, first consider their life stories. They begin as eggs, hatch into caterpillars that eat, grow by leaps and bounds and, eventually, transform into winged adults that flit around looking for food, mates, and places to lay new eggs. During each of these stages butterflies have very different needs. The more of these needs you can supply, the greater the chance that your backyard will become a home for butterflies. But always remember: anything you do can help, so start small and focus on one thing at a time.

Verbena bonariensis A top butterfly nectar plant. V. bonariensis flowers continuously from June till the first frosts and covers the main period of garden butterfly emergence in late August and September. Plant en masse for best effect.
Buddleja A butterfly magnet but has a tendency to flower before the main emergence of garden butterflies. Plant two bushes and cut one back in May so that it flowers in late summer. Alternatively, dead-head all flowers. The variety B. Lochinch responds well to dead-heading and will then flower through till November.
Mint Family The mint family is a prime butterfly-attracting family. Japanese hyssop Agastache rugosa is an excellent nectar plant. Plant in a sheltered place or treat as an annual. Other good plants are Marjoram Origanum vulgare ; Betony Stachys ; Bee-balm Monarda , Lavender Lavendula angustifolia/L. latifolia

Butterfly Gardening
Butterfly gardening is a popular past-time in Florida. One easy-to-grow plant that provides both caterpillar food and nectar for the adult butterfly is the butterfly weed or Asclepias. Monarch butterflies are regular visitors to this low-maintenance plant. Also sometimes called milkweed for the milky sap that escapes when stems or leaves are bruised, this colorful plant tolerates many site conditions but prefers the sunny and rather dry soils. Occasionally visited by hummingbirds, it is a fast grower, reaching a mature height at 3-4 feet quickly while producing brightly colored flowers from April through September. An added bonus is that butterfly weed re-seeds readily, so sharing with friends or adding to other parts of the garden is easy and inexpensive. Para la traduccon al espa±ol, marque aqui.

By planting specific plants that are attractive to various butterfly species, you can create a sea of fluttering color in your garden each summer.
    Planning a Butterfly Garden
You only need a small garden bed to create an inviting oasis for butterflies. Both butterflies and plants like sun so plan your garden with a southern exposure or in a site that gets at least six hours of sun each day. A site sheltered from the wind by trees, shrubs, or a building will prevent tall plants from blowing over, and allow your butterflies to feed, mate, and lay eggs in relative tranquility.
    Nectar Flowers
Nectar flowers provide a source of food for adult butterflies. Butterflies are attracted to brightly colored, sweet-smelling flowers that allow them easy access. Composite daisy-like flowers are favorites. Some of the preferred, easy-to-grow nectar plants are: aster, black-eyed Susan, butterfly bush, butterfly weed, cosmos, goldenrod, lantana, lavender, liatris, marigold, purple coneflower, and zinnia. Butterflies are attracted to masses of color and fragrance, so try to plant groups of flowers instead of single plants. If space is limited, however, even window boxes can catch butterflies' attention.

~ Native American Legend ~ Here are some basic principles for planning and planting a butterfly garden. Grow lots of Nectar Plants Choose a Sunny Location. Sun is extremely important for both butterflies and flowers. Butterflies need sun to keep their bodies warm enough so they can fly. Only when their body temperature is 85-100°F can they fly well. When the air temperature is cooler than this, they bask in the sun they warm themselves to effective flight temperature. You can help your butterflies by providing rocks or evergreens in garden in spots that get sun early in the day. The rocks or evergreens will absorb the heat from the sun, and the butterflies can perch or them to bask, warm up , and start flying earlier. Many perennials and other larval food plants grow best in full sun. The amount of nectar production can be determined by the amount of light they receive. Provide Shelter.

Butterfly gardening is not only a joy, it is one way that you can help restore declining butterfly populations. Simply adding a few new plants to your backyard may attract dozens of different butterflies, according to landscape designers at the University of Guelph. Butterflies, like honeybees, are excellent pollinators and will help increase your flower, fruit and vegetable production if you provide them with a variety of flowers and shrubs. They are also beautiful to watch, and are sometimes called "flowers on the wing."
- Begin by seeding part of your yard with a wildflower or butterfly seed mix, available through seed catalogues and garden centers. Wildflowers are a good food source for butterflies and their caterpillars.
- Choose simple flowers over double hybrids. They offer an easy-to-reach nectar source.

Butterfly Gardening Facts
  • Butterfly gardening can be grown throughout the United States. There is a wide variety of both butterfly attracting (nectar) plants and host plants covering climate zones throughout the country.
Butterfly gardens can range in size from a few containers placed in a sunny spot to several acres.
Nectar-producing plants will attract butterflies to your garden. In order to support a full butterfly lifecycle, host plants (for laying eggs and for a caterpillar food source) must also be present.
Throughout the country, the general requirements for a butterfly garden are the same: full sun, nectar source plants, larval host plants, a pesticide-free environment, and knowledge of the local butterfly fauna.
Butterfly gardens are best planted in the spring with younger plants or in the fall with mature plants that will become dormant quickly and re-emerge in the spring (perennials). It is best not to plants in the heat of the summer or the cold of the winter.
Many butterfly-attracting plants are natives and require little attention, as they are naturally adapted to the region in which they live.

The general requirements for butterfly gardening in St. Louis are: full sun, nectar source plants, larval host plants and a pesticide-free environment. Plant selection and placement are the most effective methods to attract butterflies, site selection for a butterfly garden is also important. Butterflies like sunny sites and areas sheltered from high winds. Warm, sheltered sites are most needed in the spring and fall. Provide rocks or bricks for pupation sites and for basking and warming in the sun. Butterfly gardens are best planted in the spring with established plants or in the fall with mature plants that will become dormant and re-emerge in the spring. It is best not to plant in the heat of summer or the cold of winter. Plant your butterfly garden in full sun. Butterflies also need sun to warm their bodies for flight. Flowering plants need sun to flourish in order to produce nectar for butterflies.
