This is chuan-shu and contained more than 3,000 characters. From that time to the present, there are five major styles of calligraphy:

... ISLAMIC CALLIGRAPHY Islamic Calligraphy; Calligraphy has a very special place in Islam, because it's strongly bound-up with the Quranic revelation in two ways. Firstly, God's word in the form of the Quran represents unique evidence of divine revelation, which was actually conveyed orally to Muhammad, but was then recorded in writing by his companions and circulated. Secondly, this revelation is described in the Quran as an "elegantly proportioned script," which is preserved with God on "spotless sheets of paper," and which is "beautiful" & "unsurpassable." Generally it's accepted that t he Arabic script descended from the Aramaic through the Nabataean and the neo-Sinaitic alphabets. After the Latin script, Arabic script is the most widely used form of alphabetic writing in the modern world. The Arab conquests of the 7th and 8th centuries AD brought

by Julian Waters T he Chinese calligrapher Wang Hsi-chih said, "Writing needs meaning, whereas calligraphy expresses itself above all through forms and gestures. It elevates the soul and illuminates the feelings." In this respect calligraphy is very close to painting and they have the same beginning. Prehistoric mark-making used powerfully evocative, primitive written forms. The term calligraphy comes from two Greek words roughly meaning artistic beauty and writing or drawing. However, calligraphy does not necessarily have to be beautiful in order to be of quality. A better test is whether it is expressively appropriate and whether it communicates well. Today, in addition to being a kind of communication, calligraphy is a serious art form. Through the style and composition of written forms the calligrapher attempts to visually interpret the spirit of texts, headlines, logos, painterly and abstract works. View Getty Museum video of how medieval scribes created manuscripts Modern western calligraphy is rooted in the development of written symbols and letterforms over thousands of years, from the earliest scratchings in dirt, cave painting and pictograms to the great classical inscriptions, and Mediaeval, Renaissance and Baroque manuscripts. The development of letterforms continued through the use of engraving and other technologies, and in the forms of typefaces used in printing, from the mid-fifteenth century up to the present. At the end of the nineteenth century broad-edged pen techniques were rediscovered by pioneers including Edward Johnston in England and Rudolf Koch in Germany. Much is owed to them and to their students and followers who helped spread renewed interest in the art.

What is calligraphy?
Chinese calligraphy is an Oriental art. But what makes it an art?
It is very much like painting. It uses Chinese characters to communicate the spiritual world of the artist. Just as one thousand persons will have as many faces, one thousand persons will have as many differences in handwriting. Through the medium of form, way of handling the brush, presentation, and style, calligraphy as a work of art conveys the moral integrity, character, emotions, esthetic feelings and culture of the artist to readers affecting them by the power of appeal and the joy of beauty. Calligraphy is not only a practical technique for writing Chinese characters, but also a unique Oriental art of expression and a branch of learning or discipline as well. As a branch of learning it is rich in content, including the evolution of writing styles, development and rules of technique, history of calligraphy, calligraphers and their inheritance in art, and evaluation of calligraphy as a work of art. This branch of learning is wide ranging and deep, forming an important part of Chinese culture. Like chopsticks, this calligraphy used to be wholly Chinese. As Chinese culture spread to Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Singapore, calligraphy became a unique feature of Oriental art.

Inkscape tutorial: Calligraphy
One of the many great tools available in Inkscape is the Calligraphy tool. This tutorial will help you become acquainted with how that tool works, as well as demonstrate some basic techniques of the art of Calligraphy.
History and Styles
Going by the dictionary definition, calligraphy means "beautiful writing" or "fair or elegant penmanship". Essentially, calligraphy is the art of making beautiful or elegant handwriting. It may sound intimidating, but with a little practice, anyone can master the basics of this art. The earliest forms of calligraphy date back to cave-man paintings. Up until roughly 1440 AD, before the printing press was around, calligraphy was the way books and other publications were made. A scribe had to handwrite every individual copy of every book or publication. The handwriting was done with a quill and ink onto materials such as parchment or vellum. The lettering styles used throughout the ages include Rustic, Carolingian, Blackletter, etc. Perhaps the most common place where the average person will run across calligraphy today is on wedding invitations. There are three main styles of calligraphy:
  • Western or Roman Arabic Chinese or Oriental
This tutorial focuses mainly on Western calligraphy, as the other two styles tend to use a brush (instead of a pen with nib), which is not how our Calligraphy tool currently functions.

Japan adopted Chinese ideograms most vigorously after the introduction of Buddhism to Japan in the mid-6th century, but the art of calligraphy was not pursued in Japan until the early years of the Heian era (+794-1185), when Japan's so-called Three Great Brushes (Sanpitsu ) began practicing calligraphy as an art. Nonetheless, the great watershed in Japanese calligraphy (in my mind) did not occur until the widespread propagation of Zen Buddhism (Chinese in origin) early in the Kamakura Era (+1185-1333). The contribution of Zen to Japanese culture is profound, and much of what the West admires in Japanese art today can be traced to Zen influences on Japanese architecture, poetry, ceramics , painting, calligraphy, gardening , the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and other crafts.

Early Semitic writing
During the 2nd millennium bc , various Semitic peoples at the eastern end of the Mediterranean were experimenting with alphabetic writing. Between 1500 and 1000 bc , alphabetic signs found in scattered sites showed a correspondence of form and provided material for sound translations. Bodies of writing from this period are fragmented: a few signs scratched on sherds or cut in stone. Few of these are celebrated in terms of aesthetic value. One interesting set of Semitic inscriptions was discovered in 1905 at an ancient mining site on the Sinai Peninsula. A sphinx from that discovery yields the taw nun taw , or t, n, t, nun , or n , sign is a rendering of a serpent. Most of the early Semitic alphabetic signs were similarly derived from word signs of more ancient vintage. The several Semitic peoples in the Middle East area spoke languages that were closely related, and this enabled them to use the same set of alphabetic signs. After some experimentation the alphabet was reduced to 22 signs for consonants. There were no vowel signs. The tribes of Canaan (Hebrews, Phoenicians , and Aramaeans) were important in the development of alphabetic writing, and all seemed to be employing the alphabet by 1000 bc The Phoenicians, living along a 20-mile (30-kilometre) strip on the Mediterranean, made the great sea their second home, giving the alphabet to Greeks in the mutual trading area and leaving inscriptions in many sites. One of the finest Phoenician inscriptions exists on a bronze cup from Cyprus called the
