It is my wish to bring you closer to the beauty and spiritual power of Japanese Calligraphy. Through my words and my artwork I hope you get enthusiastic about this special art form. Let me introduce you to the way
I practice and experience shodo and show you why it is an unceasing source of inspiration for my life and my art.
If you want to have a look first at my Dharma art, click here to view the Shodo Art Gallery . Jump to beautiful pieces of Japanese Calligraphy inspired on Buddhism.
Taking the way of the brush,
becoming a shodoka

In the pursuit of a true art form where art meets spirituality I found Japanese Calligraphy, shodo, and its spiritual expression, Zen calligraphy. Since then the brush is rooted in my heart.
What is Japanese Calligraphy for me?
I remember that the first time I saw Zen calligraphy and paintings at an exhibition of Japanese Calligraphy in Berlin I was very impressed by the abstract beauty of this artwork. But there was another secret quality in this art that I was unable to identify at first sight.
Calligraphy is an image of the mind
To create the artist has to be in union with the true self. Then her/his artwork will transmit the timeless essence of the universe and communicate on the deepest level of our being.

"This new mode was not a matter of script metamorphosing into living forms which are also readable letters, but of using script to delineate such forms. Seldom had the flexibility of the Arabic alphabet been so tested.
This practice established itself only relatively late in Islamic art, when the taboos outlawing religious iconography had lost some of their power.

    contemporary arabic calligraphy designs
Arabic calligraphy is the most typical expression of the Islamic spirit. The different classical styles of the Arabic letters offer unlimited possibilities to the artist. The contemporary designs presented here indirectly utilize these styles to create an abstract, yet readable representation of words and provide a postmodern interpretation of the letters. The intent is to cross barriers and touch other languages and cultures for it is said: "The written word is a talisman, and the process of writing is a magic connected not only with the master's technique and skill, but also with his spiritual and moral character." Nihad Dukhan is a Palestinian who grew up in Gaza, holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, and is an Associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Detroit Mercy. He was extensively trained in the classical styles of Arabic calligraphy. His work in this new form has been exhibited in New York, Washington D.C., Chicago, and San Francisco.
Dr. Dukhan is available for custom work, exhibits, workshops and lectures.

    Notes About This Exhibit
4.7 MB [Transcribed from the spoken words of Mohamed Zakariya] Writing basically consists of ordinary writing and calligraphic writing. Ordinary writing is what we normally use, it's what everybody uses in their daily life. Calligraphic writing is a specialty of writing whereby the writing is made into an art form. There is ordinary writing. There is what we would call the scribal tradition of writing, which is existing in all these cultures as well, which is the trained production by professionals of texts, whether they be government documents, books, tablets, anything which requires an individual who might be akin a little bit to a modern secretary or a modern printer, in a sense, to produce reading material. The Chinese and Japanese have a calligraphic tradition. The Hebrew culture has one. The Hebrew traditions often required the writings to be of a very permanent nature for the religious purposes and that meant works on parchment with a degree of penmanship that was consistent with total legibility and authenticity. That really is what we would call the scribal tradition in writing. The Islamic culture has one; the Latin and Greek cultures have one; the Armenian culture has one. It exists in many many forms. Now in the normal, well not normal, but in the cultures that have alphabets which are discrete, Hebrew, Latin, Armenian, Greek, the letters form little blocks that are not attached to each other.

    Chinese Calligraphy
    Introduction
Calligraphy, the writing of characters, is an art which has developed over many centuries in China. This unit introduces students to this ancient art through step-by-step instructions on writing Chinese characters. As each character is made up by a series of single brushstrokes, the student will soon learn to recognize these as components of the completed character and the written Chinese language will become much less forbidding. The exercises in this unit also encourage the students to experience the rhythm and sense of design in Chinese writing, thereby bringing an aesthetic dimension to their understanding of the Chinese language. A. What is calligraphy? The word "calligraphy" is originally a Greek word meaning "beautiful writing." We usually associate this word with good penmanship, handwriting that is neat, legible and attractive. In China, however, calligraphy is regarded as an art from in itself and is admired and displayed in museums just as paintings are. Moreover, calligraphy is often used to decorate articles of everyday use. For instance, when you go to a Chinese restaurant you may notice that the dishes are painted with characters as well as with colorful pictures. Even on the ordinary, everyday level of life, beautiful writing is appreciated.

Welcome to Horace Mann's webpage on: Arabic Writing and Calligraphy Introduction: "Calligraphy" means "beautiful writing" (or writing as a form of art). During the Middle Ages, the Muslims respected calligraphy as the highest art form because the Qur'an was written in Arabic and it represented the word of God. So calligraphy decorated the mosques and holy books of Islam. Writing was not only an artistic expression, it was a religious expression as well. Over the centuries Arabic calligraphy expanded to include different styles of writing. Just like in English where there are many kinds of handwriting (printing, cursive, and even "graffiti style" writing), many respected writing styles in Arabic developed. I. The Arabic Alphabet There are 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet. Adapted from IslamicArt site They are read from right to left (but some single letters are written from left to right!). Here are some examples of how the letters are formed. Follow the arrows to form the letters: Note: the letters change shapes as they are connected in words depending on if they are written at the beginning, middle, or end of a word.
