1521 Isolation and Identity in Joy Dogawa's Obasan.
In Kogawa's novel, Obasan, the identity of the Japanese Canadian is an identity portrayed as a constant struggle between the spaces which lie between being Japanese, and with the agony of trying to understand the Canadian contexts within which this family finds itself. This is the line which both separates the Japanese from the White Canadians, and the line which brings the Japanese into a relationship with Canadians, brought together and joined by a line which is not always visible, but which is drawing on the tensions of a shared history. 4 pgs. 4 f/c. 2 b.

      Canadian literature

Canadian literature may be divided in two parts, somewhat like a tree with two great roots. One root is the deeply buried culture of France. The other is just as deeply buried in the traditions of England. One part of Canadian literature is written in French, the other in English. But the branches of this tree are purely Canadian. Authors and readers of each literature are gaining more and more knowledge of the other, in the original or in translation.
      Canadian poetry

Canadian poetry is poetry written in Canada, by Canadians. There are two distinct branches of Canadian poetry: French-Canadian poetry (mostly written by Québécois authors) and English-Canadian poetry.

    Poet Laureates
The Poet Laureate holds an official position. He or she is appointed by a country, province or state to read and promote poetry and sometimes write "official poems." Usually, the poet appointed has published one or more well-received books. Recently, legislation was passed in Ottawa to create the position of National Poet Laureate here. Rosella Melanson has some interesting comments about the role of poetry and poets in national culture at: http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/rosellam/Ode_to_Poetry.html You can read the actual law that established the position of national Poet Laureate here . There's an amusing article about the politics of being a poet Laureate here . For some editorial opinions on the whole business of poet laureates in Canada, go to:

Pp. 148. “I think that the metafictional, playful and conceptual aspects of The Fiddlehead “Shortlisted for the Howard O’Hagan Award for Short Fiction, Boundaries, and other fictions is a collection of short fiction with an eclectic cast of people and places. The inhabitants of QueAng-QueAng; the wise Shultz and his companions; Tommy Joe, a Texan robber and Lorne, his Canadian accomplice–these are but a few vignettes of Robert Rawdon Wilson’s personal and fantastic portraits about human desires and responses.” Paula E. “Most of the pieces in Robert Rawdon Wilson’s Boundaries deal in one way or another with the problem of distinguishing fact from fiction, and honest fiction from self-glamourizing construct. . . . Wilson’s work, enmeshed as it is in theory, is also an examination of the dangers to the soul inherent in theoretical thinking. . . . Wilson has a gift, sadly rare in intellectuals, for responding to humanity with a smile that refuses to become a sneer. He’s an extremely funny writer too; Boundaries is one of the few books I’ve read that had me both reaching for reference books and laughing out loud. Wilson is also possessed of a strong, crystalline prose style that moves and dazzles.” Aleander Rettie, “Reviews,”
