Like other Iron Age Europeans, the early Celts maintained a polytheistic mythology and religious structure. Among Celtic peoples in close contact with Rome, such as the Gauls and Celtiberians , their mythology did not survive the Roman empire , their subsequent conversion to Christianity , and the loss of their Celtic languages . Ironically, it is mostly through contemporary Roman and Christian sources that their mythology has been preserved. The Celtic peoples who maintained either their political or linguistic identities (such as the Gaels and Brythonic tribes of the British Isles ) left vestigial remnants of their forebears' mythologies, put into written form during the

The Dagda
The supreme god of the Celtic pantheon appears to have been the Dagda. This word means the Good God, not good in a moral sense, but good at everything, or all-powerful. The Dagda is a father-figure, a protector of the tribe and the basic Celtic god of whom other male Celtic deities were variants. Celtic gods were largely unspecialised entities, and perhaps we should see them as a clan rather than as a formal pantheon. In a sense, all the Celtic gods and goddesses were like the Greek Apollo , who could never be described as the god of any one thing.

Font Font The Celts believed that gods and goddesses lived in nature and were natural objects such as mountains and rivers. To the Celts, "the natural and supernatural worlds were inseparable" (Calvert 46). Trees were especially important, and many of their rituals were done in sacred tree groves. A specific tree represented each Celtic tribe and was especially sacred to those people. Nemetona was goddess of the grove, which made her one of the most important gods (Lassieur 44). Also, the Celts worshipped water, which to them was the basis of life and the most powerful force in nature. They bathed in streams and lakes for cleansing and healing, and threw items in as an offering because they "revered water and its ability to give life to plants, animals, and people"(Martell 25).
The father of gods was Dagda, or the "Good God", who "had a cauldron, known as the cauldron of plenty, that provided

edit Gaelic Mythology
Gaelic mythology is a term referring to the mythology of the gaelic speaking Celts, those being, for the most part, the Celts who inhabited Ireland and Scotland. The mythologies of Ireland and Scotland are often referred to as two seperate entities due to some differences (mostly caused by the assimilation of the Picts with the Celts of Scotland,) but the do share large portions of their mythology. Gaelic Mythology is usually divided into four "cycles:" The Mythological Cycle Ulster Cycle Fenian Cycle , and Cycle of the Kings The Mythological Cycle is in Irish mythology only; it describes various mythological conquests of Ireland, most notably, those by the Tuatha D© Danann and Milesians. It comes mostly from a body of text known as the
