;" colspan="3"> Cervical cancer ICD-10 code: ICD-9 code: Cervical cancer is a malignancy of the cervix. Worldwide, it is the second most common cancer of women. It may present with vaginal bleeding but symptoms may be absent until the cancer is in advanced stages, which has made cervical cancer the focus of intense screening efforts utilizing the Pap smear. Most scientific studies point to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection as a necessary pre-requisite for development of cervical cancer. Treatment is with surgery (including cryosurgery) in early stages and chemotherapy and radiotherapy in advanced stages of the disease. An effective vaccine for the two most common strains of HPV has recently been licenced (see below).

Signs and symptoms
The possibility to identify premalignant changes on a cervical smear has made screening the major cause for referral of women with possible cervical neoplasia. In many countries, women are advised to have a regular Pap smear to check for premalignant changes.[1] Recommendations for how often a Pap smear should be done vary from once a year to once every five years. If cervical cancer is detected early, it can be treated without impairing fertility. Consistently abnormal smears may be a reason for further diagnosis despite complete absence of symptoms.

Cervical cancer is a disease in which body cells in the cervix or the uterus' lower part are malfunctioning. The cervix is that canal that leads to the vagina. To understand what cervical cancer is, it is important to note what a cervix is first. It is the birth canal that leads to the vagina. Cervical cancer is a disease when body cells in the cervix act up until they develop a tumor. When normal cells transform themselves to cancer cells, cervical cancer sets in. Though it is obviously scary to have cervical cancer, the good news is it can be prevented. One must first know the risk factors or chances that she will develop cervical cancer. The risk factors of cervical cancer are: 1. HPVs or Human Papillomaviruses HPV is a collection of viruses that put the cervix to danger. Infections like this are common and can be passed through sexual intercourse. 2. Old age

Description If abnormal cells on the surface of the cervix precancerous conditions of the cervix : abnormal cells present, but are not cancerous) spread deeper into the cervix, or to other tissues or organs, the disease is then called cervical cancer, or invasive cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer occurs most often in women over the age of 40. It is different from cancer that begins in other parts of the uterus and requires different treatment. Most cervical cancers are squamous cell carcinomas (squamous cells are the flat cells found on the surface of the cervix) and adenocarcinomas . See also vaginal cancer For information on the other main cancers to affect the female reproductive system go here Symptoms and Signs Symptoms of cervical cancer usually do not appear until abnormal cervical cells become cancerous and invade nearby tissue. The most common symptom is abnormal bleeding, which may start and stop between regular menstrual periods and/or occur after sexual intercourse, douching, or a pelvic exam. Other symptoms may include:

Chlamydia and Cervical Cancer New research has shown that chlamydia, the most common sexually transmitted disease in the US, may increase a woman's risk of developing cervical cancer. In the study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), women who showed signs of any type of chlamydial infection in their blood were two-and-a-half times more likely to develop cervical cancer, when compared to women with no sign of infection. Although the reason for this increased risk is still under investigation, researchers speculate that immune system cells that are activated at chlamydia infection sites may damage normal cells.
What is the cervix?
The cervix is the lower, narrow part of the uterus (womb) located between the bladder and the rectum. It forms a canal that opens into the vagina, which leads to the outside of the body.
What are precancerous conditions of the cervix?
Precancerous conditions of the cervix are identified as cells that appear to be abnormal, but are not cancerous at the present time. However, the appearance of these abnormal cells

    Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer is a malignant cancer of the cervix. It can also be easily detected by regular screening. However, most women who develop cervical cancer have not been screened in the three years prior to their diagnosis. Only some women with pre-cancerous changes of the cervix will develop cancer. This process usually takes several years but sometimes can happen in less than a year. For most women, pre-cancerous cells will remain unchanged and go away without any treatment. But if these precancers are treated, almost all true cancers can be prevented.
    Cervical Cancer Facts
The cervix is the lower part of the uterus leading into the vagina. This is an area where cells change rapidly, and where malignant cell changes are most likely to occur. While cervical cancer is the tenth most common cancer among Canadian women of all ages, it is the third most common among women aged 20 to 49. The Papanicolaou (Pap) smear test is used to detect changes in the cervix before they become cancerous or when they are at a stage when treatment can be effective. Since the introduction of the Pap test more than 25 years ago, the death rate from cervical cancer has declined dramatically, dropping almost 50 percent. The survival rate is 74 percent over five years. However, approximately 1,450 Canadian women will receive a diagnosis this year of invasive cervical cancer, and approximately 420 women will die from this disease. Woman who are older (aged 40-59), immigrant, Aboriginal or have a lower socio-economic status are at higher risk of developing cervical cancer, primarily because they have not been screened at all or have been screened irregularly.
