Chemical Spills Emergency Actions In TCU Educational Facilities: It is the responsibility of the faculty and lab instructors to know the characteristics of the chemicals they work with and to take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and students in containing spills that occur. Material Safety Data Sheets for Academic areas are maintained in the Sid Richardson Chemical Stock Room. In TCU Work Areas: It is the responsibility of employees to know the chemicals they work with and to take precautions to protect themselves in containing spills that occur. Individual Departments are responsible for maintaining a current list of Material Safety Data Sheets.
  • First priority is First Aid. Any spill that results in personal exposure should be treated immediately.
    • Eyes or Skin contact: If chemical is a liquid, assist the person to a sink/eyewash and flush the eyes or affected skin areas with water thoroughly and continuously for a minimum of 15 minutes. If chemical is a solid, brush chemical off skin gently. Remove contaminated clothing. Contact Campus Police (7777) for an ambulance.

Introduction
Maritime transport of chemical products
During the last twenty years, there has been a considerable development in the transport and handling of hazardous chemical products. Ships which transport chemical products carry a whole range of products which often pose a number of problems and risks in the case of accidents. Maritime transport of hazardous substances can be done either in bulk or in packaged form. Products in bulk are transported either by chemical carriers, as is the case of liquid substances at an ambient temperature, or by gas carriers if gaseous substances are involved. The capacity of tankers for chemical products varies from 400m³ to 40.000m³ and tanks vary from 70m³ to 2.000m³. The capacity of ships carrying liquefied gases also varies and can reach 100.000m³/ l /. International construction norms of ships carrying chemical products are defined by the IMO : the IBC code for chemical products in bulk, the IGC code for liquefied gases in bulk and the BC code for solids in bulk.

Chemical Spills
Each year, thousands of chemical spills occur in the United States. Many companies who feel they are above the law in the United States on a daily basis violate environmental and worker safety laws at all levels (local, state and federal) that are set-up to protect workers and the public from toxic substances. Chemical spills in the workplace occur due to negligence on the part of the employer and lack of training. Workers compensation laws provide that injured workers are entitled to medical expenses and lost wages, but you may be entitled to additional compensation in the case of negligence. Chemical spills usually result from any of the following negligent or unsafe practices:
  • Unsafe handling of chemicals Improper chemical storage Chemical storage tank ruptures Improper containers for chemical disposal Failure to dispose of chemical in timely manner Failure to comply with OSHA regulations
Chemical spills affect ecological environments, resulting in the death of local fish populations, aquatic plants and microorganisms. In addition, chemical spills can travel into nearby oceans, streams, lakes, ponds, rivers and even local drinking water supplies. The dangers and side effects of chemical spills can last many years. Chemical spills send out tons of benzene and other harmful toxins into the environment.

Chemical Spill Clean Up The Salarollpump system can be used for chemical spill clean up as no mechanical components will come into contact with the discharged media.
The hose inside the pump housing is made from Nitrile, which is resistant to many chemicals. Other hose materials are available and can be supplied upon request.
The Salarollpump can handle temperatures of 212 o F (100 o C) and may increase to 266 o F (130 o C).
When pumping flammable liquids the system must be grounded to earth. The power pack can be placed in a location that prevents contact with flammable liquids and fumes. It is recommended to replace the hose after a clean-up of aggressive chemicals. The table opposite indicates values estimated for normal clean-up. The Problem
Discoloration of the water, odor, and sightings of waste cans or barrels are all indicators of a potential chemical spill. The toxicity, concentration, dosage, timing, and many other factors all contribute to severity of the problem if a chemical spill reaches a storm drain and subsequently a local stream.
To Correct the Problem
To report a hazardous waste spill, call the Washington Department of Ecology 24-hour Emergency Response Center at 425-649-7000. You can call this number for any problem that requires immediate attention.
Prevention
If purchasing chemicals, attempt to use a less toxic form, or one that biodegrades more rapidly. Store the chemicals properly - under cover on a spill pallet and in a well-ventilated area. Have a chemical spill kit on hand – refer to “Environmental Services and Products” in the yellow pages. Do not mix unlike waste chemicals.

Chemical Spills
1. Whenever you spill a chemical, or discover a spill or release, tell your supervisor and coworkers in the area immediately. 2. When a spill occurs, you and others should move well away from the area when determining the appropriate response. The appropriate response depends on whether the spill is a simple spill, which you can clean up yourself, or a complex spill, which requires outside assistance. b. Complex spills are any spills that may spread rapidly, may endanger people or property and may endanger the environment. 4. Anyone who may have been contaminated by the complex spill should, if necessary and prudent, be immediately put under an emergency shower and his/her contaminated clothes should be removed as the flow of water begins. The affected area of the skin should be washed for 15 minutes. EMS will be called and medical treatment will begin as soon as possible. 5. If an emergency exists, activate the building alarm (fire alarm) so that the building could be evacuated.

Minor Hazardous materials or waste spills that present no immediate threat to personnel safety, health, or to the environment can be cleaned up by laboratory personnel that use the materials or generate the waste. A Minor hazardous material spill is generally defined as a spill of material that is not spilled in large quantity, does not present a significant fire hazard, can be recovered before it is released to the environment, and is not in a public area such as a common hallway. Such a spill can usually be controlled and cleaned up by one or two personnel. Major hazardous material and waste spills should be reported to the MIT emergency number (X100) to receive immediate professional assistance and support in the control and clean up of the spilled material. Major hazardous materials and waste spills are generally defined as having a significant threat to safety, health, or the environment. These spills generally are a highly toxic material or is spilled in large quantity, may present a significant fire hazard, cannot be recovered before it is released to the environment, or is spilled in a public area such as a common hallway. Upon reporting such a spill personnel should stand by at a safe distance to guide responders and spill clean up experts to the spill area.

Chemical Spills Chemical spills which may pose a threat should be handled by:
  • Attempt to confine the spill as much as possible only if you have been trained to confine spills and are thoroughly familiar with the hazards of the spilled chemical. If you have contact with the spilled material, find a source of water ( restroom, kitchen sink, custodial closet) remove any contaminated clothing immediately and flush all areas of bodily contract with large amounts of water. Notify the Public Safety Department at (96)2-5555 and tell them: Building Name, Floor, Room Number, Type of Accident and Chemicals Involved.
Minor Chemical Spills Defined as a spill of potentially dangerous chemicals in quantities less than one liter. In a laboratory environment, this would normally be limited to extremely hazardous substances. In an office maintenance environment it is presumed that the person using the chemical is aware of the properties and hazards associated with the use of the chemical and can, therefore, be responsible for its cleanup. Major Chemical Spills Defined as a spill of potentially dangerous chemicals in quantities exceeding one liter or creates a condition that would be dangerous for many people. These spills are generally beyond the training, scope, capacity and resources of the individual users. Major spills are NOT to be cleaned up by the user or departments who have the chemicals, but are to be referred to the St. Paul or Minneapolis Fire Departments for response by trained and properly equipped hazardous material teams.
