Varicella (chickenpox)
Chickenpox generally presents with a low-grade fever, malaise and a rash. The rash is firstly maculopapular then becomes vesicular (blistered) and progresses to crusted lesions over about five days. Lesions appear in three or four crops. They are most numerous on the trunk and less so on the face, scalp, limbs and mucous membranes of the mouth. Some cases (about 5%) are subclinical or exceedingly mild in nature.

Chicken pox
One of childhood's most common diseases, chicken pox, or varicella as doctors call it, is a highly contagious viral infection. It can spread through the air or by contact with chicken pox blisters. It is rarely dangerous to otherwise healthy children. It can occur at any age but is most common in children under 10 years old. Exposed people who have had chicken pox rarely catch it again. Prevention The chicken pox vaccine is recommended for children between the ages of 12 and 18 months and for children over 11 and adults who have not had chicken pox. Symptoms Fever The first symptom is usually a mild fever , which appears two to three weeks after infection. The fever may be accompanied by a cough or runny nose. In some children, the fever may run as high as 104 degrees F.

Vaccination not only protects vaccinated persons, it also reduces the risk for exposure in the community for persons unable to be vaccinated because of illness or other conditions, including those who may be at greater risk for severe disease. While no vaccine is 100% effective in preventing disease, the chickenpox vaccine is very effective: about 8 to 9 of every 10 people who are vaccinated are completely protected from chickenpox. In addition, the vaccine almost always prevents against severe disease. If a vaccinated person does get chickenpox, it is usually a very mild case lasting only a few days and involving fewer skin lesions (usually less than 50), mild or no fever, and few other symptoms. Chicken Pox
From LoveToKnow Baby
Chicken pox used to be a fact of life for almost every child. In fact, it was a common virus that typically infected children under the age of fifteen. Those who did not contract it as a child still had the possibility of having chicken pox as an adult. With today's chicken pox vaccine, however, the outbreaks of this disease aren't as fierce as they once were. aj_server = 'http://rotator.adjuggler.com/servlet/ajrotator/'; aj_tagver = '1.0'; aj_zone = 'ltk'; aj_adspot = '290187'; aj_page = '0'; aj_dim ='286700'; aj_ch = ''; aj_ct = ''; aj_kw = ''; aj_pv = true; aj_click = ''; edit

      Chickenpox (Varicella)
Chickenpox (varicella) is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VSV). The disease is usually mild in children but can be severe in adults and those with impaired immune systems. Each year, approximately 11,000 people are hospitalized and 100 die due to chickenpox. College students who have not had chickenpox should be vaccinated against this potentially serious disease.
      Vaccination Recommendations for College Students
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College Health Association (ACHA) recommend that all college students without a history of chickenpox receive the vaccine.
      Symptoms of the Disease
Chickenpox has a characteristic itchy rash, which then forms blisters that dry and scab in four to five days. The rash can be the first sign of illness, sometimes accompanied by fever and tiredness. An infected person can have skin lesions that can be few in number to more than 500. Complications that may require hospitalization increase with age. Adults are 10 times more likely than children to be hospitalized with severe consequences of chickenpox. These consequences include pneumonia and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).

About
Main
Chicken pox!!!!
For years, i have been surronded by people who got it. Either at home, or at uni and even at work...some were family, others friends and even workmates. The last person i knew that got it was Shuhaimy, at ISOS. And during that time, I was praying I would get it...hehe. That way I could get out of going to work. But, again, I didn't get it. *sigh* So, imagine my shock when i accidently burst a water filled blister on my back. I tried to convince myself that it was not chicken pox..."maybe just a pimple", i thought. Now the reason chicken pox came to mind was because apparently one of the students i teach on Tuesdays, didn't come that day...she was having chicken pox, and just the week before she was fine and in class. And the other reason was, i had been having a headache the whole day...had a feeling something was wrong. Damn it! Then, i woke up yesterday to find a few more of those blisters...and i started freaking out!!! Called up my employer and rushed to the doctor's office...and the doctor confirmed it as Chicken Pox...Aarrgghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!Why now? Anyways, got my medication and went back to my room. Got strict instructions from my employer, Satoko, to have lunch, take my medicine and sleep. How can i say no to her? Hehe...By the way, i have to take 4 pills every 6 hours...anti virals to prevent it from getting too bad. Had a really bad nite last nite...tossed and turned a lot and i was having a fever. Had to get up at 2 am to eat something and then take my medication. *sigh* It really sucks being sick...and on top of that, to be sick and be alone in another country. Oh well, hopefully it goes off quickly...
