RECOGNIZING HEALTHY and UNHEALTHY SEXUAL DEVELOPMENT in CHILDREN
by Phil Rich, Ed.D., MSW
In an age when childhood sexual abuse and victimization is increasingly on our minds, it is important for parents (and other caretakers) to understand what is "normal" sexual development and behavior in children and teenagers, and which behaviors might signal that a child is a victim of sexual abuse, or acting in a sexually aggressive manner towards others. In fact, sexual development and sexual play are natural and healthy processes in children, from toddlers through childhood and into adolescence. For infants and toddlers, this usually involves body sensations, cuddling and touch, and playing with toys. Even in the earliest of days, babies and toddlers touch and rub their own genitals, and even as infants boys experience erections. By early school age (5-7), children are interested in body parts and functions. Some sexual play may begin, and concepts of love and affection begin to develop, evolving into behaviors and questions that continue developing into later childhood (8-9 years old). But it is important to distinguish between age appropriate and age inappropriate sexual behaviors. Many children engage in sexual behaviors and show sexual interests throughout their entire childhood, even though they have not yet reached puberty. However, normative (or expected) sexual behaviors are usually not overtly sexual, are more exploratory and playful in nature, do not show a preoccupation with sexual interactions, and are not hostile, aggressive, or hurtful to self or others.

Tue, 03 Oct 2006 Really real examples of HOP techniques in action
I recently stopped working for the University of Pennsylvannia's Informations Systems and Computing group, which is the organization that provides computer services to everyone on campus that doesn't provide it for themselves. I used HOP stuff less than I might have if I hadn't written the HOP book myself. There's always a tradeoff with the use of any advanced techniques: it might provide some technical benefit, like making the source code smaller, but the drawback is that the other people you work with might not be able to maintain it. Since I'm the author of the book, I can be expected to be biased in favor of the techniques. So I tried to compensate the other way, and to use them only when I was absolutely sure it was the best thing to do. There were two interesting uses of HOP techniques. One was in the username generator for new accounts. The other was in a generic server module I wrote.
Name generation
The name generator is used to offer account names to incoming students and faculty. It is given the user's full name, and optionally some additional information of the same sort. It then generates a bunch of usernames to offer the user. For example, if the user's name is "George Franklin Bauer, Jr.", it might generate usernames like:

Behavior Reinforcement
Up till about 6-8 months, your child is basically a ball of need and developing neural connections. Before this time you should never punish a baby of this age but there are things that you can do to help mold behavior. I remember very strongly the first time I watched Timmy doing something specifically to try and manipulate his situation he was 6 months old. Ro and I subscribe to the belief that you should never hit a child whether spanking or otherwise. This doesn't mean that we've not been physical with or son but it has been restraining him or carrying him to his room or out of a situation and we have never caused him physical pain. Tim is and has been a pretty good kid but even so, both Ro and I have been at the end of our ropes at times. Those of you with tempers need to be very aware of yourselves while around your child. One of the things that the Burton White child development books talk about is what punishment to use at different ages this is extremely helpful. For example, the most effective way to punish your newborn child is to separate him/her from the primary care giver. Not in another room but 5 feet away behind a childproof gate. Ro used to be in the kitchen with Tim behind a gate in the family room, 5 feet away, with all of his toys, in plain view. This drove him crazy and was a very effective punishment. You give a warning "you throw that toy at me again and you will go into the family room" and then when it happens again you put them behind the gate. Other times all we had to do is to hold him tight in our lap with him facing away from us. Not hurting him in any way but restraining his movement. Wow did that work. Right now sending him to the stairs is the preferred punishment or to his room if starts yelling about it. No physical pain, no yelling, no scaring, but using these and other mechanisms you can extremely effectively demonstrate what behavior we do not want him to perform.

Behavioural Characteristics of Students with Learning Disabilities
This check list is designed to alert the classroom teacher to the possible presence of a learning disability among one or more of his/her students. For each characteristic described below, check YES if the child exhibits the behavior. You will probably find that children will have greater deficits in one area than in another. This will indicate areas of strength and weakness. A few children will have many deficit areas. Because this check list is not standardized and results will be based on each teacher's subjective judgment, it is recommended that the teacher complete a check list for every child in his/her class. Students who score abnormally high in comparison to the other students will then be most suspect. If you are concerned that a child in your class may be at risk of a learning disability, you may wish to seek further assessment. Definition:
