Child Behavior Improved
Child behavior experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend positive reinforcement for helping to solve behavior problems. We've taken this as our guiding philosophy for My Reward Board, building in auditory and visual positive feedback for each interaction between the program and your child. A cast of encouraging animated characters called "The Happies" inhabit our behavior chart and react with a thumbs up and applause whenever a task, goal, or chore is completed. Points are instantly awarded and a fun on-screen meter (using a "climbing the hill" metaphor) is updated to show your child's progress towards the weekly goal. Try it now risk free and see your child's behavior improve. - Aug. 28, 2007

Help Your Child Manage Their Own Behavior
By Linda Milo
Children, like teens, like to feel personal power. Power is mostly the ability to influence some aspects of our lives by the choices we make. Giving a child a choice is the most powerful way to build personal power and self-esteem for your child’s lifetime. Children exert their personal power when they refuse to go to bed, or decide not to take a bath, or have temper tantrums. To help your child use their power in a positive way and to strengthen your child’s sense of competence, give them the power to make positive personal behavior choices.
A choice for any of us means that we are using free will, exercised by our own mind and judgment. A choice communicates to your child that you trust him to learn and grow from his experience with choices, actions and mistakes. Your child will feel more powerful and use their power in a positive way because choices:

Improving Children's Behavior
Children misbehave for a wide variety of reasons; however, negative emotions are often a big contributing factor. If we can help a child feel better, we will usually see a big improvement in the way he or she behaves. Fortunately, EFT provides a powerful technique for helping kids feel better. I use EFT to help children clear negative emotions connected to past events and, just as important, I teach them to use it on their own to clear negative emotions as needed. Giving children a simple technique that enables them to feel better quickly helps them feel empowered and hopeful. It gives them a positive alternative to the awful cycle of venting negative feelings through misbehavior; the resulting disapproval and/or punishment; followed by more negative feelings, such as anger or shame. EFT also provides parents with a technique to use with their kids, as well as a technique to use on themselves. After all, parenting can be extremely challenging and frustrating. It can bring up a lot of negative memories and unpleasant emotions. Parents, too, need and deserve a way to feel better!

Policy on Children and their Behavior in the Library
The Wayland Public Library welcomes children of all ages to use and enjoy the facilities, collections and programs offered by the library. The library attempts to provide a safe environment for children to select books and other materials, and participate in library programs. To enable the library staff to promote use and access while insuring the safety of Children's Room users, the library has established the following policies: 1. All children 8 years old and younger should be accompanied by a parent or other adult who is responsible for the child. Unattended children are a safety concern for all library users. 2. At the discretion of a responsible adult, a child age nine or older may be left unattended for the period of time needed to select materials, complete a homework assignment, or attend a program. The child must know how to reach the responsible adult in case this need should arise. Children should not be left for excessively long (more than two hours) periods of time; the library does not provide daycare services.

Ten Tips for Dealing with Temper Tantrums
by Destry Maycock, MSW
You never know when one might hit, but when it does, is there any place to hide? A child's temper tantrum can be one of the most unnerving behaviors parents have to deal with. The following are some tips that may be helpful the next time a temper tantrum erupts. CHALLENGE : "Whenever David doesn't get his way he throws himself on the floor, screams, kicks and cries incessantly. What can we do to help him overcome this behavior?" TIP : What is David getting out of this behavior. First lets make sure that you are not rewarding this type of behavior, positively or negatively because both will help keep it alive. If you eventually give in to this behavior by changing your initial decision (not letting David go out to play, refusing David a cookie), David has learned that tantrums work. Hence, when David wants his way he may think, " a good tantrum just may get me that candy bar, it got me out of bedtime last night." Negative attention (yelling, threatening, ridicule, spanking) seldom changes the behavior either. Getting you upset may be just as rewarding as giving in to their demands. TIP : Be proactive. Think of the situations that invite David's meltdowns and head them off before they happen. Do questions that require a yes or no answer provoke tantrum? Instead of "Do you want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch David?" try "It is time for lunch David. Would you like PB&J or macaroni and cheese?" Advance notice may help as well. "We will be leaving Grandma's in ten minutes. Get everything you want to take care of before we go completed/done."

HOW TO GET YOUR KIDS TO CLEAN
If you're not interested in whipping your children as little slaves but their abundance of junk is driving you nuts then join the club. My house seemed like a pig pen but I thought they were too young to clean. Then they grew older and for some reason they still weren't interested in cleaning. Although I noticed my daughter was much better than my son. Several melt-downs later I whipped up these...

  • Basically it goes something like this...

Ask an Expert Date Posted: 06/27/2006 Question My daughter seems to be facinated by the act of kissing on the lips. I have seen her kissing stuffed animals or other inanimate objects on the lips. Should I be concerned with this behavior? I should mention that my family request kissing on the cheek when greeted. Answer The next time your daughter begins kissing stuffed animals or other objects, gently inquire about this behavior. Ask her if anyone kisses her on the lips. This may simply be one of those stages that children go through that doesn't have any significance. However, it would be good to monitor her behavior and continue to emphasize that kissing on the cheek is an appropriate greeting with family members and others. This would also be a good time to talk with her about privacy, good and bad touches, and not keeping secrets.
