typical deaf child behavior
(11 Messages) Hello! I hope someone can help! I have a 7 year old daughter who is completely deaf. She does wear one aid that helps her hear some sounds but she uses ASL to communicate. Her communicating skills have really progressed and we are extremly pleased. My problem is her behavior. I'm not sure if this is deaf child behavior or if we are having behavioral issues. She can be such a sweet girl but then so hateful at the same time. She "fake cries" when told to do something. She stomps her feet ...
child behavior problem - mental illness?

Youngsters who have a close relationship with their natural father after their parents split up are likely to be less disorderly, anxious or aggressive. Researchers discovered that children who had infrequent or no contact at all with their non-resident fathers were more likely to externalize and internalize prob ...

Search All Articles document.write(''); Loving Yourself: How to Raise Your Self-esteem by Barbara Williams Cosentino RN, CSW From confidence and satisfaction, to insecurity and self-loathing, your level of self-esteem drives your life. What can you do to build high self-esteem?
Do you berate yourself for things you do or say? Are you afraid to make a mistake? Relax. Chances are you're not a bad person, and most likely, you do at least one thing well. Perhaps it's time for a self-esteem tune-up. Yale University researchers recently found that a "bad hair day" can be hazardous to your mental health. If something as insignificant as an out-of-control coif can "diminish your self-esteem and inspire feelings of incompetence, self-doubt, and even self-hatred," what might happen if you were late for work? Or had a fight with your boss? "How we feel about ourselves crucially affects virtually every aspect of our experience...from the way we function at work, in love, in sex, to the way we operate as parents, to how high in life we are likely to rise. The dramas of our lives are the reflections of our most private visions of ourselves," says Nathaniel Branden, a renowned psychotherapist and author, viewed by many as "the father of modern-day self-esteem psychology." The Foundation of Self-esteem According to Branden, self-esteem has two components: a feeling of personal competence and a feeling of personal worth, reflecting both your implicit judgment of your ability to cope with life's challenges and your belief that your interests, rights, and needs are important. Healthy self-esteem comes from realistically appraising your capabilities, striving to enhance these capabilities, and compassionately accepting your limitations and flaws. Living consciously thinking independently, being self-aware, being honest with yourself, having an active orientation, taking risks, and respecting reality, says Branden, is the foundation of good self-esteem.

Family and Human Development
  • Is this a growth or developmental stage?
Is this an individual or temperament difference? Not all children of a certain age act the same way. All children have their own temperament or personality which accounts to a large extent for the differences in their behavior. Some may be shy, moody, adaptable, persistent, sensitive or inflexible.
Does the child know what to expect? If a child is in a new situation or place he may not know what behavior is appropriate or expected. It may be the first time an only child is being asked to share a toy. Developmentally, he really does not understand what it means to share. It is up to the parent to calmly and patiently explain to him over and over again the concept of sharing. It also helps to let him see you share.
Is the child expressing unmet emotional needs? Children will behave in whatever way they can to get attention. If a child needs extra love and attention, instead of withholding that from him, find ways to acknowledge and validate the child more often.

Psychologists and psychiatrists say that a child’s undesirable behavior is influenced by temperament, environmental factors, and early childhood experiences. God’s Word says sinful behavior is an overflow of the heart and every child is born with a sinful heart that is utterly deceitful. The Bible teaches that foolishness characterized the heart of a child. The goal of godly parenting is to love the child by nurturing him in the Scriptures while simultaneously training him through consistent, biblical discipline. Come learn how to lovingly correct your child’s behavior.

    EFFECTIVE BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT PART III:
CONSEQUENCES OF CHILDREN'S BEHAVIOR - REINFORCEMENT
    Kelly B. Cartwright, Ph.D.
The first two articles in this series focused on ways of interacting and communicating with children that promote effective behavior management. Another area essential to this process involves consequences for children's behavior: reinforcement and punishment. Here, we need to talk about some basic psychological principles of learning.
    Consequences
Behaviors are strengthened or diminished by consequences. For example, when a child cries for a toy or candy at the market and an adult purchases the desired product, the child experiences a pleasant consequence, a reward. As a result, he or she is MORE likely to cry for toys or candy when visiting the market in the future. Children learn associations between behaviors and consequences, and the types of consequences experienced by children affect their behavior directly. When attempting to manage children's behavior, careful attention must be paid to specific behaviors in children as well as to the consequences that follow the behaviors. There are generally two types of consequences: reinforcement and punishment.
    Importance of Reinforcement
Generally, when adults think of consequences for children's behavior, we think of unpleasant things like spanking or restricting privileges. Research demonstrates, however, that reinforcement, or pleasant consequences, may actually be a more powerful motivator for children. The following sections suggest some ways to utilize consequences in managing children's behavior.

Helping Your Child Learn Responsible Behavior
Introduction Our children deserve to learn important lessons from us and to acquire important habits with our help. They need help in learning what matters to us. We want our children to grow up to be responsible adults. We want them to learn to feel, think, and act with respect for themselves and for other people. We want them to pursue their own well-being, while also being considerate of the needs and feelings of others. Today, there is wide recognition that many of our children are not learning to act responsibly while they are young. Studies show that many children see nothing wrong with cheating on tests. Some see nothing wrong with taking things that don’t belong to them. If proper attitudes and behavior are not learned early, problems can mushroom with even worse consequences when children are older. As crime has increased, teen-age offenders have shown less and less feeling for their victims. But even for the youngsters who will never commit a crime, it is better to learn responsibility when they are young, rather than when they are older and they have to change bad habits. This article focuses on practical suggestions for helping young children appreciate the importance of acting responsibly in their everyday lives. Further, it provides ideas on how to help them make responsible choices, and stick with them, even when doing so is hard and the material rewards are few.
