Voices: Our Untold Stories Chinese stories Chinese Culture
Chinese culture is rich and profound and it has a fascinating and diverse history spanning over 5,000 years.

A celebration of Chinese life In 1912, the Republic of China officially adopted the Gregorian calendar used in the West, but the traditional Chinese festivals continued to be calculated in the old lunar calendar which goes back more than four thousand years. The way the Chinese calculate each month is called "first moon", "second moon" and so on. In the Chinese calendar each day and each month represent something, which might happen on each day of each month. Today many Chinese still strongly believe the predictions that are written down on the calendar.

Ceremonies of Life *Birth A child is considered one year old at birth and another year is added at each Chinese New Yea. A baby's first-month celebration is a most important occasion and the baby's parents traditionally give family and friends red-stained, hard-boiled eggs in celebration. A newer tradition is giving especially prepared rice cakes to announce the birth and to celebrate. For a special gift, the Chinese often give a small piece of 24-karat gold baby jewelry. Money is also a traditional gift and should be an even amount (NT$800 or NT$1,000). The money should be put in a plain red envelope and placed beside the baby's pillow. Baby gifts should be given during the first month and never before the birth of the baby. Sending a nice flower arrangement to the mother wile she is in the hospital is an appropriate gesture. *Wedding Wedding celebrations are usually held in a restaurant or hotel and female guests should wear something bright and colorful to give face to their hosts. Men should wear a jacket and tie. It is polite to arrive on time, or at most, a few minutes later than the time shown on the invitation. By tradition, a guest who arrives to early is considered greedy. Guest should leave as soon as the meal is finished and the last drink has been taken.

It has its origins from over two thousand years ago. The Chinese Opera has become very complex and combines music with acrobatics, pantomine and martial arts. Chinese Language
Chinese Language
Also called SINITIC, Chinese HAN, the principal language group of eastern Asia, belonging to the Sino-Tibetan language family. Chinese exists in a number of varieties that are popularly called dialects but that are usually classified as separate language by scholars. When spoken, the languages of Chinese are mutually unintelligible; they differ to about the same extent as the modern Roman languages. Most of the differences among them occur in pronunciation and vocabulary; there are few grammatical differences. All the Chinese languages share a common literary language (wen-yen), written in characters and based on a common body of literature. This literary language has no single standard of pronunciation; a speaker of a language reads texts according to the rules of pronunciation of his own language. Before 1917, the wen-yen was used for almost all writing; since that date it has become increasingly acceptable to write in the vernacular style (paihua) instead, and the old literary language appears to be dying out.

Min cooking, which belongs to Chinese southern Cooking, emphasizes on fish and shellfish. Apart from the love toward seafood, a characteristic that identifies Min cuisine is their peculiar obsession with soup. Fujian dishes, mostly marinated in wine, are slightly sweet and sour, and less salty. The best-known Fujian dish is Fotiaoqiang(literarily means Buddha Jumping Over the Wall). which is the mixture of seafood, chicken, duck, and pork putting into a rice-wine jar and simmered over a low fire. The name implies that the dish is so delicious that even the Buddha would jump over a wall to eat it once he smelled it. Other well known dishes include lychee-shaped pork meat, Min style shrimp and shark's fin wrapped in lotus leaves. go to top Home About Us About China ... Travel around China
