Home learn Chinese Chinese history Chinese culture ... HOME Chinese history China is an East Asian with a large territory, a huge population and an ancient history. With written records dating back 4,000 years, it is recognized as one of the four great ancient civilizations of the world, together with ancient Egypt, Babylon and India. Moreover, it is the only ancient civilization that has continued to this very day. China was one of theChinese history cradles of the human race. The Chinese nation is not only the most populous but also one of the oldest in the world. Fossils that have been found in Chinese territory include those of Yuanmou Man, the first Homo erectus, who lived 1.7 million years ago, those of Lantian Man, who lived 750,000 years ago, and those of the Peking Man, who lived at Zhoukoudian in today's suburban Beijing 600,000 years ago. The fossils of Shu Ape, a primate that lived 45 million years ago, which is known as the "first anthropoid", were discovered in China in 1994.
I The first light of Chinese history civilization revealed itself 7,000 to 8,000 years ago, as indicated by the ruins of the Daxi Culture in Sichuan and Hubei provinces, the Majiapang Culture in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, the Hemudu Culture in eastern Zhejiang and the Yangshou Culture along the middle reaches of the Yellow River and its main tributaries.

  • THE EMPEROR'S SHADOW (Movie) - dull in spots and long, about the first emperor of China and his buddy. Not recommended for the easily bored or easily queasy.
  • chapters on China in CARTOON HISTORY OF THE WORLD (Larry Gonick) - quick dash through early China gives a little flavor of this period and the struggles for power.
  • MULAN (Movie) Obviously for kids, but also helps with understanding why things like the Great Wall exists. See if you can find the less Disney-fied versions of the Fa Mulan story.
  • TRAVELS OF MARCO POLO (Marco Polo) gives a good idea of life during the reign of Kubilai Khan (late 1200s), but is a tad long and very dated in style.
  • (Taiping Rebellion kid's book) gives a broad view of the Taiping Rebellion of the mid 1800s.
  • THE HUNDRED SECRET SENSES (Amy Tan) - much of which is a flashback to the Taiping period.

Starting Point
Chinese History, Abbreviated
C hina has a wild and fascinating history, that is to say, hardly able to be distilled into a timeline that fits on the front page of The Inquirer. Regardless, you've gotta start somewhere, so what follows is a (very) abbreviated chronology of the world's most populous nation. 221 BC: Qin Dynasty establishes first unified Chinese state
7th to 14th Centuries AD: China has “Golden Age” under Tang and Song Dynasties. Stimulated by contact with India and the Middle East, the arts flourish Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, establishes the Mongol Yuan Dynasty Zhu Yuan Zhang, a peasant, overthrows the Mongols and founds the Ming Dynasty which rules until 1644 The last Dynasty, the Qing, rules China The British defeat the Chinese in the Opium War and gain control of Hong Kong After years of peasant unrest, Hong Xiuquan, who believes himself to be the son of God, starts the Taiping Rebellion; at least 20 million people die in the fighting before the rebellion is put down with British and French assistance
The Boxer Rebellion; Emperor Ci Xi helps foreign forces suppress the uprising

Early Chinese History
T he contribution made by Chinese immigrants in colonising the Australian continent has been seriously underestimated and is mostly forgotten by the vast majority of modern day Australians. Likewise, their part in the early development of Cairns has been misjudged, and in some instances, completely overlooked. As one researcher has written regarding this oversight, "During the nineteen twenties and early thirties, when towns in the Cairns district were celebrating their first fifty years, commemorative booklets virtually ignored the earlier importance of the Chinese...This omission should certainly be corrected with reference to North Queensland, where coloured minorities largely laid the economic foundations of the region. In the Cairns district, the most prominent non -European group was the Chinese."

Overview
The Chinese Historical Society of Southern California Collection documents artifacts excavated from two sites in Southern California. The first site is represented by about 1,040 color images of artifacts from the original Los Angeles Chinatown; an additional 150 images document artifacts from the site of a Chinese laundry in Santa Barbara. These two Chinese Historical Society of Los Angeles artifact collections are among the largest and best-documented assemblage of cultural materials on Chinese settlement in the United States. The first and larger collection consists of materials systematically excavated, in October/November 1989 and February/March 1991, during the construction of the Metro Rail Red Line by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Unearthed from a sealed and unmixed deposit underneath Union Station, the collection conveys information on the daily life and activities of people from all walks of life and all classes of the Chinese community from the 1880s to 1933. Valuable data on food and subsistence, medicinal preparations and health practices, household technology, recreation, art, ritual patterns of space usage and interaction with the Anglo community can be garnered from the objects, and changes over time may also be traced stratigraphically.

Sino-Roman relations started first on an indirect basis during the 2nd century BCE. China and Rome progressively inched closer with the embassies of Zhang Qian in 130 BCE and the military expeditions of China to Central Asia, until general Ban Chao attempted to send an envoy to Rome around 100 CE. Several alleged Roman embassies to China were recorded by a number of ancient Chinese historians. The first one on record, supposedly from either the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius or the later emperor Marcus Aurelius, arrived in 166 CE.
