The invention of paper in China led to the use of paper as a new media to apply intricate cutouts and sculptured patterns. In the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD), paper cut started to mature as a serious art form. Professional paper cut craftsmen emerged from different regions. Originally people used paper cutting as sacrificial offerings to gods, deities ancestors, or dead relatives. With the passage of time, people also started to use paper cut as decorative ornaments in their houses, windows, doors, wardrobe, ceiling and lamps using intricate nice patterns cut out from paper. The cutting techniques have been perfected allowing the rendering of complex and detailed subjects as paper cuttings. An intricate example of paper cut work during the Tang Dynasty is on display at the British Museum.
After the Tang Dynasty, came the Song Dynasty (960-1127 AD) where paper manufacturing technology was greatly improved. The improved methods of making paper introduced different kinds and colors of paper. Paper cut artists then applied their craft on the new kinds of paper and also started to use a variety of colored paper.

Chinese History Lesson
" Great Wall of China , here I come!" that was my cry of jubilation 2 weeks ago :) Now I'm back home finally, getting the sleep and rest I lacked of from the trip. The whole 7-day trip was like an intensive Chinese History lesson, my tour guide wittyly said he would give us test on the subject at the end of the day. Glad he didn't, I felt sleepy many times while listening to him ;p he used "deep" Chinese words ba In China, most (if not all) tour guides are Chinese History graduates. They are so good at it that they talk about dynasties and kings and emperors like their own family stories. My goodness, they even quote exact years and dates of a specific incident effortlessly like their own birthdate! Anyway, to cut the story short, in a nutshell, the trip [Beijing] was to me:

Some Chinese history and culture
The Taoist understanding of the creation of the world is remarkably similar to that of the West (Judaism, Christianity, Islam): In the beginning was the Tao, an empty void of endless potential. Over eons, out of the Tao emerged qi , vital energy or breath. Originally, the universe was in a state of chaos but the light qi rose and formed the heavens, and the dark qi snak and formed the heavy earth. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without shape and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the watery deep, but the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the water. God said, "Let there be light." And there was light! God saw that the light was good, so God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day" and the darkness "night." God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters and let it separate water from water. So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. It was so. God called the expanse "sky." There was evening, and there was morning, a second day.

The development of Chinese Medicine can be traced back to over 10,000 years ago. Its theories and practices developed through the observation of the effects they produced on certain parts of the body and on specific ailments. Early acupuncture was carried out using sharpened bone fragments prior to the development of other tools. The first and most important classic text on Chinese medicine was completed in about 200 BC. This text is known as the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine.

Chinese history and me
Last night I started reading The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. It starts out ominously on a good foot, if you are able to consider a man purchasing a slave, "marrying" her, and having children with her while exchanging a total of ten words per day a good foot. He is concerned that her feet weren't bound, but he decides to overlook it. She gives birth one afternoon and returns to the fields that same day and since he feels frustrated with her he allows her to work alongside him even though he considers telling her to return home. You know, that kind of good foot. And I think he is portrayed as a good, caring husband! Every time I try to dip my toe into Chinese history I end up feeling like a 9th grader perusing the summer reading list for Honors English class. There isn't anything there that I really want to read, not much in the way of happy or encouraging, certainly nothing funny. So I plod through, checking things off the list and taking long breaks in between Hemingway and James Joyce. Or the dynasties and Sun Yat-Sen. There is no doubt that I am interested in Chinese history and culture. I have a general interest which is encouraged by Z.'s presence in the house. It's just that the history, especially the recent history, is so dang depressing. With the collapse of the last dynasty China became very unsettled. Aside from the loss of life and the crushing oppression and poverty that so many of the Chinese people have had to endure for so long I find the tales of the deliberate destruction of the arts, artifacts, and architecture to be almost unendurable. Really. When you get to the Cultural Revolution I just want to hide my eyes. Put on top of that the way women have been treated for generations and I want to pull the covers over my head and stay in bed for a long, long time.
