Kevin Rudd speaks Mandarin?
I was channel surfing just the other day. In the nano second that I had my eyes on Phoenix Channel, I noticed a familiar westerner speaking in fluent mandarin to a reporter from Beijing. I thought nothing of it as dubbed interviews are not uncommon in China. I soon realised that the interviewee was Kevin Rudd , the current prime Minister of Australia. Having spent some time in Australia before, naturally, I was quite interested to hear what he had to say.

Soup of the day
New Scientist reports that Nokia are going to launch a new phone which will be able to translate menus from Chinese to English. IF YOU think you are ordering ice cream from a foreign menu, you don't want to end up asking for a plate of sheep's eyes by mistake. A cameraphone Nokia plans to launch next year will set you straight. Snap a picture of, say, a dessert menu and the phone will recognise the characters and translate the words within a few seconds . The prototype shown to New Scientist can translate 9000 Chinese and 600 Japanese food-related words into English, with more language versions to follow. However, if you closely at the photograph you can see that it may not be all that helpful - the English translation manages only one word - soup (湯). The BBC reports ( China dishes up menu translations ) that the Beijing Tourism Bureau is trying to improve the English translations of restaurant menus in preparation for next year's Olympics. Translations such as "virgin chicken" for a young chicken dish and "burnt lion's head" for pork meatballs are confusing for foreigners, it says.

Asia Society in the News U.S. SCHOOLS UNPREPARED TO MEET RISING DEMAND FOR CHINESE LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION, ACCORDING TO NEW ASIA SOCIETY STUDY NEW YORK, NY, The report, entitled Expanding Chinese Language Capacity in the United States What would it take to have five percent of American high school students learning Chinese by 2015? The U.S. State Department has designated Chinese a critical language and in late May, U.S. Senators Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) and Lamar Alexander (R-TN) introduced the United States-China Cultural Engagement Act, proposing $1.3 billion in federal funds to provide for Chinese language and culture instruction in American schools. Some of the key findings and recommendations made in the report include:
  • Lack of qualified teachers is the key bottleneck in building capacity. Higher education institutions should create fast track or alternate route certification programs for U.S. Chinese speakers. States should expand visiting faculty programs for teachers from China, similar to those in other languages, and should create procedures to make it possible for U.S. teachers to become certified teachers of Chinese. In order to translate current interest into high-quality school programs, districts will need expert assistance to implement best practices. Programs need to start earlier, use more intensive research-based approaches, and include the communities of heritage language learners. Public education campaigns to raise awareness among educators, students, and parents of the growing importance of Chinese will be needed, as well as competitive seed funds to make programs available in less affluent school districts.

Daily Life in China Ke Dawei Learning Chinese Home Page: Tips for learning Chinese Below are listings of online courses and study aids for learning Chinese. Almost all lessons have a similar format. Lessons introduce the basic sounds (phonemes) of the language, pinyin, character strokes and have some very basic dialogues. The first five to ten lessons of any course cover the same elements and vocabulary. You can use many of the listings below to reinforce and supplement your lessons at home on line. You don't have a Chinese mother to endlessly repeat words and phrases to you but a good proxy is an MP3 player that never gets tired. Most of the listings below are in MP3 format so easily downloaded with a right click and can be put on an MP3 player for repeated listening. Some sites can't be right clicked but getting the audio from your computer is easy. If you use a sound program like Audacity it will get the sound for you. Audacity is here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/latest/audacity-win/audacity-win-1.2.6.exe . If you have any trouble email me. MP3 files can be played with Mediaplayer, Realplayer and many other players. A good player for language study is Audacity. It's free to download. With Audacity it's easy to pick out parts of a dialogue for repeated listening so you can focus on pronunciation. It also has the sound graphed which helps also.

76. The Chinese Language
Beijing City The Capital of China, host of 2008 Olympic.
http://ibjg.com/chinese_language.htm
In general, all varieties of Chinese are tonal and analytic. However, Chinese is also distinguished for a high level of internal diversity. Regional variation between different variants/dialects is comparable to the Romance language family; many variants of spoken Chinese are different enough to be mutually incomprehensible. There are between six and twelve main regional groups (depending on classification scheme), of which the most populous are Mandarin, Wu, and Cantonese, in that order. The identification of the varieties of Chinese as "languages" or "dialects" is a controversial issue.
The standardized form of spoken Chinese is based on the Beijing dialect, a member of the Mandarin group; it is described in the article "Standard Mandarin". Standard Mandarin is the official language of the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China on Taiwan, as well as one of four official languages of Singapore (together with English, Malay, and Tamil). Chinese—de facto, Standard Mandarin—is one of the six official languages of the United Nations (alongside English, Arabic, French, Russian, and Spanish). Spoken in the form of Standard Cantonese, Chinese is one of the official languages of Hong Kong (together with English) and of Macau (together with Portuguese). The traditionally recognized seven main groups, in order of population size are:
