Chinese Mythology by Anne Birrell
An Introduction This volume provides English translations of some 300 representative myth narratives selected from over 100 classical texts. Organizing the narratives according to themes and motifs common to world mythology, Anne Birrell addresses issues of source, dating, attribution, textural variations, multiforms, and context. Drawing on work in comparative mythology, she surveys the development of Chinese myth studies, largely in the West; summarizes the contribution of Chinese and Japanese scholars to the study of Chinese myth since the 1920s; and looks at special aspects of traditional approaches to Chinese myth. The result is a guide to the study of Chinese myth for specialists and non-specialists alike.

Mythology Articles Chinese Mythology
Chinese mythology contains a variety of stories that have been in the history and culture of China for centuries. They have been preserved and passed down to newer generations in the form of written text and oral stories told by the elders to the younger children of the culture. The earliest known Chinese mythology dates back to 1200 B.C. with many of those original stories still being told today. There is plenty of religion to be found in Chinese Mythology with much of it embracing the concepts of Confucianism and Taoism. There are many different versions of the same story in Chinese mythology though. This is because most people passed along the version that carried their own religious beliefs along with it to give it more personal meaning. Of all the gods in Chinese mythology the Jade Emperor is the one most recognized. He is known in Chinese mythology as the leader of both Heaven and Earth. He has the final say over the rulings of the gods, the humans, and the animals. Yet he is known as a fair and kind ruler with a wrath that shows no mercy against those who have participated in evil.

Chinese Mythology
General
Chinese mythology is a collection of cultural history, folktales, and religions that have been passed down in oral or written form. There are several aspects to Chinese mythology, including creation myths and legends and myths concerning the founding of Chinese culture and the Chinese state. Like many mythologies, some people believe it to be at least in part a factual recording of history.
Historians have conjectured that the Chinese mythology began in 12th century B.C.. The myths and the legends were passed down in oral format for over a thousand years, before being written down in early books such as Shui Jing Zhu and Shan Hai Jing. Other myths continued to be passed down through oral traditions such as theatre and song, before being recorded in the form of novels such as Fengshen Yanyi.
Creation Myths
A unique characteristic of Chinese culture is the relatively late appearance in Chinese literature of creation myths. Those that do exist appear well after the foundation of Confucianism, Taoism, and Folk Religions. The stories exist in several versions, often conflicting, with the creation of the first humans being variously ascribed to Shangdi, Heaven, Nuwa, Pangu, Yu Huang.

Sorry. :D
How about a character like Zhu Bajie (The Pig of the Eight Prohibitions). He's a man-pig with a mane of steel who fights with an iron rake. He was once a Field Marshal of Heaven but was banished due to his flirtations toward the moon goddess. Clueless 03-04-07, 03:59 AM There's the Chinese Pantheon (http://www.planewalker.com/encyclopedia/encyclopedia.php?intEntryID=908) to work with as well. Also you may want to pick up a translation of Journey to the West to take a look at as a cultural resource. Herobizkit 03-04-07, 05:38 AM These aren't terribly accurate, but...
IMO, Dragonball Z is more Chinese- than Japanese-inspired. Lots of weirdness abounds there.
Also, Saiyuki: Journey West is a Playstation (PSX) game that is a mostly accurate re-telling of the famous Journey, chock full of Chinese mythology. Head on over to www.gamefaqs.com and do some research into the plot, perhaps.

Retrogaming Roundtable Specialty Forums Import-Mania! PDA View Full Version : Contra name translation: progress/help plz Ed Oscuro 01-29-2006, 11:44 PM Pretty simple topic: I wanted to figure out what what the name means. For a long time I'd heard a literal translation would be "battle spirit (some type of) cloth," but that doesn't really seem to be the case.
Here's my progress so far.
Babelfished, Japanese to English for "魂斗羅" comes out as "soul 斗羅" which isn't much, but a start.
Working with Chinese did much better, however. I worked with the source here (http://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%AD%82%E6%96%97%E7%BD%97) and found that "魂斗罗" = "The soul fights Luo" which makes a lot of sense, actually. I did that with simplified Chinese. Next, I tried the regular Japanese title as traditional Chinese, and got the same translation once again...which, when I think about it, is something I should've figured out at first LOL
Anyway, read the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yan_Luo_(Chinese_mythology) to see what this Luo is all about. Why it makes sense in the context of the Contra series should be obvious.
