Chiropractors
Significant Points
  • Job prospects should be good; employment is expected to grow faster than average because of increasing consumer demand for alternative health care. Chiropractors must be licensed, requiring 2 to 4 years of undergraduate education, the completion of a 4-year chiropractic college course, and passing scores on national and State examinations. About 52 percent of chiropractors were self employed. Earnings are relatively low in the beginning but increase as the practice grows.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Chiropractors, also known as doctors of chiropractic or chiropractic physicians , diagnose and treat patients with health problems of the musculoskeletal system and treat the effects of those problems on the nervous system and on general health. Many chiropractic treatments deal specifically with the spine and the manipulation of the spine. Chiropractic medicine is based on the principle that spinal joint misalignments interfere with the nervous system and can result in lower resistance to disease and many different conditions of diminished health.

Chiropractic Treatments for Back Pain
Introduction to chiropractic care
Spinal manipulation (like that used by chiropractors in chiropractic medicine) is not a new or recent concept. Records show that manipulation of the spine can be traced back to the time of Hippocrates (1, 2). Since the inception of chiropractic medicine in 1895, chiropractors have held as a primary tenet that biomechanical and structural derangement of the spine can affect the nervous system. Because the nervous system is so intimately related to the spine from an anatomical standpoint, identifying and restoring spinal structural integrity through chiropractic treatments can improve the health of the individual by reducing pressure on sensitive neurological tissue. This tenet continues to be the emphasis that many chiropractors embrace and chiropractic patients seek.

Chiropractic Schools
Find Chiropractic Schools in the United States and Canada. Students, who are seeking an innovative and alternative education, may be interested in the prospects of enrolling in one of a number of chiropractic schools.
Today, there are several academic options for aspiring doctors of chiropractic; however, it is critical that students gain the necessary education prior to enrollment: in most cases, it is essential that students have acquired at least ninety semester hours in one of several subjects, including but not limited to social sciences, math, English, humanities, biology, physics, etc.
Chiropractic schools extend a variety of educational opportunities to prospective students including financial aid and even scholarship programs. Be sure to carefully examine chiropractic schools prior to signing up for enrollment, as each school or university varies from one another.
Some chiropractic schools provide a plethora of undergraduate studies to students, which can be beneficial for those students wishing to pursue a doctor of chiropractic degree. Common undergraduate studies offered at a number of chiropractic schools may include academic programs in biology, psychology, life coaching, business, exercise science and nutrition.
Chiropractic schools will sometimes offer pre-chiropractic coursework for those students who wish to follow a doctor of chiropractic education but have not yet attained prerequisite and mandatory semester hours or degree from an accredited college or university. In addition to providing educational programs in doctor of Chiropractic, a few chiropractic schools integrate in-depth graduate programs involving concentrated areas of study including internship programs, chiropractic sports sciences, Injury management, and other sports coaching prospects.
