Font Font Chronic fatigue syndrome has, at yet, no miracle cure. There is actually still some controversy about whether it even really exists. If you suffer from its symptoms, you doubtless believe in it very much. One of the problems with chronic fatigue syndrome is that there isn't a lab test for it, so therefore a doctor must diagnose through the process of elimination. Although no magic pill is yet on the market, and perhaps that's a good thing, there are certain steps you can take to battle this disorder.
Chronic fatigue syndrome, in case you weren't aware, feels like the flu to many sufferers. The patient feels persistent fatigue, chronic fatigue-not just the usual tiredness we all feel. Along with the fatigue come headaches, backaches, joint pain, sore throat, and unsatisfied sleep. You may get sleep, you may get lots of it, but you never really feel refreshed after waking up. In most cases, but not all, a low grade fever accompanies these symptoms.
Medically, you can battle the symptoms, but not the syndrome. You may alleviate the back and head pains with aspirin; you may get some relief through injections of gamma globulin; even antidepressant pills have been known to help some patients. But if you try to take all this into your system at once, you are definitely not going to improve things.

What is it?
Chronic fatigue syndrome or CFS , is a disorder which is characterized by severe fatigue, concentration difficulties, and often immune system imbalance. CFS is sometimes referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis, post-viral fatigue syndrome, or "yuppie flu". Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a complex disorder which has no known cause or cure at this moment and there is no biological test that can lead to its diagnosis. edit
Symptoms
The symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome can vary from person to person, but can include:
  • Fatigue : CFS sufferers experience severe fatigue (physical and mental) which is not relieved by rest or sleep. Cognitive : CFS Patients experience concentration problems like confusion, memory lapses, difficulty thinking clearly. This is often refered to as"brain fog". Pain : Many, but not all CFS patients experience muscle and joint pain. Some severly, some mild. This is often associated with the closely linked illness fibromyaliga.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Can you explain "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?"
This condition is actually a modern medical X-Files case. Originally described in the late 1980s, CFS has no definite symptoms and no clear cause or origin. Instead, it is often confused with or misdiagnosed as one of several other illnesses with strikingly similar symptoms, including lupus, mononucleosis, chronic Lyme disease, and neurally mediated hypotension. Although it can affect anyone from any race or ethnic background in any socioeconomic class, it has been found to affect women more than men, often striking its victims between the ages of 25 and 45. Because researchers have no clear idea how CFS originates, theories abound. While some scientists hypothesize that the disease stems from a viral infection, similar to cytomegalovirus, others have noticed that certain cases appear in clusters, affecting a segment of a community or family. Again, studies are in their early stages, and no clear links have really been established between either environmental or genetic factors and subsequent infections. Again, since CFS is a medical mystery of sorts, treating it is equally problematic. Instead of being able to address any underlying condition that may be causing all of the symptoms, doctors are currently only able to treat those physical manifestations. For example, different medications that may be prescribed are used to treat the individual symptoms in order to alleviate depression, sleep disruptions, and gastrointestinal difficulties. However, it has been noted that people with CFS can react in unusual ways to medication, so doctors are advised to start their patients on very low doses, increasing the amounts until they can see therapeutic benefits in their patients.

Information on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Description
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is characterized primarily by profound fatigue, in association with multiple systemic and neuropsychiatric symptoms, lasting at least 6 months, and severe enough to reduce/impair daily activity.
Causes
The cause of CFS is unknown. Multiple immunologic abnormalities suggestive of viral reactivation syndrome have been reported, but no one source identified. Attention is given most to herpes (Epstein Barr Virus and Human Herpes Virus-6) and other enteroviruses, possibly in concert, possibly with environmental factors.
Several mechanisms have been proposed by researchers, including: Immune system activation, particularly by viruses; Oxidative stress and glutathione deficiency; Endocrine dysfunction, including adrenal fatigue, thyroid deficiency and hypothalamic-pituitary axis abnormalities; Neurotransmitter deficiencies; and Drug-induced fatigue.

Chronic fatigue: clues in the blood th July 2007
Researchers at UNSW believe that blood may hold vital insights into what is happening in the brains of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
In a study unparalleled in its scope, a team led by UNSW Professor Andrew Lloyd of the Centre for Infection and Inflammation Research has studied the differences in gene expression patterns in the blood of people who either recover promptly after acute glandular fever or develop the prolonged illness called post-infective syndrome.
The researchers examined six million pieces of gene expression information for analysis in the project, known as the Dubbo Infection Outcomes Study. The study is named after the NSW town in which the work was conducted. The team studied the expression of 30,000 genes in the blood, testing each of the 15 individuals between four and five times over a 12-month period.
The team was able to narrow its findings to the expression of just 35 genes whose pattern of expression correlated closely with the key symptoms of the illness when examined from onset through to recovery. Gene expression is significant because it is the process by which a gene’s DNA sequence is converted into the proteins which ultimately determine the manifestations of disease.
The research paper has been published and selected for editorial comment in the prestigious Journal of Infectious Diseases
Since 1999, the team has been tracking the long-term health of individuals infected with Ross River virus (RRV), Q fever infection and Epstein-Barr virus, which causes glandular fever.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is a syndrome that has only recently been described by the medical profession. Once controversial, it is gradually becoming accepted as a valid diagnosis by medical professionals. Typically CFS follows a viral infection (e.g. cold or viral stomach bug), and is sometimes found after mononucleosis infections. Non-specific symptoms of fatigue tiredness exhaustion , and aches make CFS difficult to diagnose and similar to other conditions such as lupus multiple sclerosis fibromyalgia and Lyme disease (among others).
