Digg it Quick, what does CFS stand for? Chronic fatigue syndrome , a condition that causes profound exhaustion and a variety of other symptons. In the past, CFS has been treated with suspicion, with some labeling it nothing more than an excuse for the lazy. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has launched a campaign to educate the public about this bona fide condition. In announcing the initiative, CDC director

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterised by persistent or relapsing unexplained chronic fatigue, of new or definite onset and lasting for at least six months. Fatigue is not the result of an organic disease or ongoing exertion, rest does not alleviate it, and it results in substantial reduction in previous levels of occupational, educational, social and personal activities. In our research program we have developed tools for Assessment of chronic fatigue. We make a distinction between predisposing, precipitating, predictors and perpetuating factors to investigate Pathophysiology and mechanisms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Most investigations relate to perpetuating factors. In the Epidemiology and prognosis section the epidemiology of the condition and its predictors are presented. Therapeutic interventions are directed at the perpetuating factors of CFS. The Reviews section gives surveys of investigations.

In strict medical terms, the name Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) refers only to a pattern of symptoms (see below). It can't be called a disease because there's no medical test that can link all cases (like the HIV test does in AIDS). But many people believe CFS is one illness because so many cases are so similar.

The Australian version of CFS can be viewed *here* . This document is a comparsion of the 1997 CFS Clinical Practice Guidelines and the Revised 2002 CFS Clinical Practice Guidelines(current) with both major and minor revisions highlighted. What is CFS? It is a "catch all" term, chronic fatigue syndrome is where a patient is positioned when they present with symptoms as listed below (with or without an indentified origin) and the continued presence of these symptoms (often cyclic or varying in presentation or intensity) is not explained by allopathic medicine. The US ICD-10 CM now refferences two(2) CFS identities. The first entry is at G93.3 for Postviral fatigue syndrome, Chronic fatigue syndrome, postviral with the:- excludes1 chronic fatigue syndrome NOS (R53.82). This exclusion is the second entry at R53.82 for Chronic fatigue, unspecified, Chronic fatigue syndrome NOS with excludes1 : postviral chronic fatigue (G93.3) postviral fatigue syndrome (G93.3). Clearly there are TWO Syndromes featuring the word 'fatigue' and 'syndrome', this is supported by the current UK situation where NHS treatment overseen by the "Wessely school" is excluding those patients where viral implications are involved or recorded. In the UK this treatment is for ME/CFS, which ?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Illness or Disease?
The debate about chronic fatigue syndrome, as played out in popular publications and the media is replete with stories of charismatic physicians, fighting for the rights of their patients to be seen as having a 'real' disease with unarguably organic pathology. Such doctors act as magnets for somatizing patients. The history of medicine illustrates that such physicians often fail to recognise psychogenic emotionally caused disorder in other forms as well. For the last hundred years the same physicians as have taken an interest in the physical treatments of writers' cramp (RSI) have also had a side line in offering physical remedies for neurasthenia. They have attracted numerous sufferers of each disorder to their clinics. They hold out the promise of empirical remedies and do not undertake any close examination of their patients' predicaments. The press glorifies such entrepreneurial doctors as 'scientists trying to solve a problem' and 'medical sleuths' involved in a 'quest' until they invariably 'crack' a case, or 'dent a medical world mystery'.

Study shows link to inactive children
[US News] By Elizabeth Querna Imagine having a hangover that never went away, or feeling exhausted even after the simplest errand. Chronic fatigue syndrome has been described as an "incapacitating tiredness" and afflicts more than half a million Americans. Still, little is known about what causes the disease–doctors usually diagnose it only when other conditions are ruled out. Now, scientists from the Royal Free and University College Medical School in London say there might be a link between childhood activity level and chronic fatigue syndrome as an adult. What the researchers wanted to know : What childhood habits might cause adult chronic fatigue syndrome?

    Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
A significant number of Natural Health Care Providers acknowledge that one of the most important foundations necessary for optimal health and natural energy is a clean intestinal tract that has the proper balance of bacteria. A healthy intestinal tract harbors a complex ecology of both friendly and "unfriendly" bacteria numbering just over 400 different species, of which there are thousands of strains.
Regular consumption of a diet that is high in animal fats, processed foods and contains inadequate fiber, usually results in a sluggish intestinal tract which may subsequently lead to colitis, diverticulosis, crohn's disease , headaches, foggy thinking, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Additionally, there are numerous assaults on the friendly bacteria or "proper microbial balance." They may include antibiotic treatment, birth control pills, radiation therapy, constipation, mercury from fillings and a diet that is low in calcium, fiber, lactose and other complex carbohydrates, but high in meats, coffee, tea and alcohol.
Because the diet has a major influence on the profile of the intestinal flora these antagonists to friendly bacterial proliferation will result in an overgrowth of coliforms and other "unfriendly" bacteria.

    Oxidative Stress and Dietary Modifications
    Alternative Medicine Review 2001 (Oct); 6 (5): 450–459 ~ FULL TEXT
Alan C. Logan, ND, Cathy Wong, ND (Cand.)

    Introduction
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a relatively common disorder, particularly in women, affecting 522 women and 291 men per 100,000. [ ] In addition to the characteristic persistent fatigue, CFS patients often complain of a number of symptoms including headache, joint pain, gastrointestinal (GI) disturbance, cognitive dysfunction, visual disturbance, and paresthesia. [
Pathological changes have been observed in CFS patients, including white matter lesions in the CNS [ ] and cerebral hypoperfusion. [ ] Other findings that suggest CNS involvement include vestibular dysfunction [ ] and gait abnormalities. [ ] Immune response also appears to be impaired; specifically, elevated levels of interferon alpha, transforming growth factor beta, interleukin-4, interleukin-6, interleukin-1 alpha, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-a) have been observed. [
The purpose of this paper is to integrate various branches of current research in an effort to highlight the importance of antioxidant capacity and food intolerance in CFS. First, recent studies will be reviewed that indicate oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of CFS. This suggests antioxidants may be beneficial in the management of CFS. Glutathione (GSH), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a-lipoic acid, oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), Ginkgo biloba, and Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) would therefore be dietary supplements with potential therapeutic benefit. Second, the literature will be reviewed that suggests food intolerance may be involved in CFS symptom presentation and in oxidation via cytokine induction.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (cfs), the early signs of the illness is a strong and noticeable fatigue that comes on suddenly and then comes and goes and never stops. Chronic fatigue syndrome shares symptoms, which are common with other autoimmune diseases. If a person is found to have an autoimmune disease such as chronic fatigue syndrome (cfs), the immune system mistakenly attacks itself and targets the tissues, cells and organs of the person’s own body. Having chronic fatigue syndrome or cfs , means more than just getting tired. With the busy lives that we all lead nowadays, we all get tired from time to time. But the fatigue with chronic fatigue syndrome (cfs) is extreme or overwhelming and does not get better with bed rest. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia ( FM) have many similarities. In fact it is not uncommon for a person to have both conditions. Some experts believe that the two conditions are variations of the same disorder. Both CFS and FM have pain and fatigue as symptoms. Also people with CFS only do not have the tender points that people with Fibromyalgia have
