Why I Am a Classical Musician
Published January 18th, 2008 in Culture Social Culture and Personal Comments I carve a tiny piece of wood off the base of the reed. The shaving isn’t much larger than one or two hairs of daily growth on a man’s face. Almost nothing. I put the reed back on the mouthpiece and fasten it with the ligature. I form an embouchure and play the scale I repeat hundreds of times a day to check reeds. The raspiness has gone from the reed’s vibrations. The difference is huge. Now it has a bell-like ring as it pings through the instrument. Ahh! After 2 hours of working on reeds, I am tired. Add five hours of rehearsals today and that’s a full day. But I haven’t finished. I still need to review specific sections of this weekend’s music. And the reed I just fixed might not make it through five minutes of playing, with the time spent on it lost after that. Why do I do this? I smile as I ask myself. “Because I love it” might be one answer. But that’s not quite it. It’s more like an itch I have to scratch. From age 12 on I had the “ring” of the clarinet’s tone in my head, an ideal to strive for. Such a goal is elusive; it shifts and hides moments after being within your grasp.

BSO performs rarely heard `Pelleas'
By Richard Dyer, Globe Staff, 9/14/2003 Debussy's opera "Pelleas et Melisande," premiered in 1903, was one of the defining musical works of the 20th century, and there is a sense in which it is still out on the cutting edge elusive, ambiguous, strange. ADVERTISEMENT Up until the 1940s, it was regularly performed here, often with the charismatic Scottish soprano Mary Garden in the role of Melisande, which she created at the world premiere in Paris. But there hasn't been a professional production of the opera in this city in 50 years. Now the Boston Symphony Orchestra, still arguably the greatest orchestra in the world for French music, restores this masterpiece to us in a pair of concert performances (with supertitles) led by principal guest conductor Bernard Haitink Oct. 16 and 18 in Symphony Hall. Haitink has a superb European recording of "Pelleas" to his credit, but he has never conducted the piece in this country; the BSO has performed the symphonic interludes from the opera but not the complete work. The orchestra has assembled a distinctly gala cast for the occasion. Mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, a former Bostonian now widely acclaimed as America's finest female singer, takes the role of Melisande, and the British baritone Simon Keenlyside sings Pelleas. Others in the cast are contralto Nathalie Stutzmann, baritone Gerald Finley, and bass-baritones John Tomlinson and Alfred Walker. The Tanglewood Festival Chorus will also participate.

Home Know India Culture and Heritage Dance and Music Dance and Music Classical Dances Folk Dances Classical Music Classical Music The roots of the Indian music can be traced back to the Vedic period, when the celestial creator of the universe, Brahma was said to have handed down music to the world through his son, sage Narada, to usher in an era of peace and solace among humanity. Music is one of the oldest forms of art, which has been reflecting the richness of Indian culture and tradition throughout ages. Right from the evolution of music, there have been many developmental phases in its path, which have redefined the creative enormity and infiniteness of the art. New historical and cultural research has shown that Indian music has progressed through a very intricate communication between different people practicing different traditions and cultures. The amalgamation of the musical styles of various races in the country displays the ethnic diversity of India, which is found nowhere in any other nation. The earliest form of music was used during the Vedic period as sacred hymns, which were chanted through a method called "Ek Swari Gaayana," meaning singing with the help of one note. The single note hymns gradually developed to the "Gatha Gaayana" method of singing with double notes. Eventually, the Vedic chants of the single note, double notes, and such other systems gave way to the initiation of the seven note system called "Saptaswara". Modern studies of the Vedic period reveal that music had been regarded as a highly privileged art form in every household, as it had been handed down to them by the Gods themselves. In this context, the glory of the Gupta period reverberates throughout the history of Indian music as one of the most important contributors to the development of Indian music.
