The Ethics of Human Cloning The successful cloning of an adult sheep, announced in Scotland this past February, is one of the most dramatic recent examples of a scientific discovery becoming a public issue. During the last few months, various commentators scientists and theologians, physicians and legal experts, talk-radio hosts and editorial writers have been busily responding to the news, some calming fears, other raising alarms about the prospect of cloning a human being. At the request of the President, the National Bioethics Advisory Commission (NBAC) held hearings and prepared a report on the religious, ethical, and legal issues surrounding human cloning. While declining to call for a permanent ban on the practice, the Commission recommended a moratorium on efforts to clone human beings, and emphasized the importance of further public deliberation on the subject. An interesting tension is at work in the NBAC report. Commission members were well aware of "the widespread public discomfort, even revulsion, about cloning human beings." Perhaps recalling the images of Dolly the ewe that were featured on the covers of national news magazines, they noted that "the impact of these most recent developments on our national psyche has been quite remarkable." Accordingly, they felt that one of their tasks was to articulate, as fully and sympathetically as possible, the range of concerns that the prospect of human cloning had elicited.

The Cloning of Dolly
Dr Jamie Love I've decided to make cloning one of the first topics in this first issue of Science Explained because the folks who created Dolly are acquaintances of mine. (Yes, I am a name dropper, aren't I?) A few kilometers from my home lives Dolly, the world's first mammalian clone; not counting identical twins. (They're clones too.)
What makes Dolly different from identical twins is that she was grown from a cell taken from an ADULT animal! Many bright, well-respected scientists said it couldn't be done. Dr Ian Wilmut, who is in charge of the lab that created Dolly, admits that he had his doubts. However the hard work and imaginative thinking of his staff made it all possible. How did they do it and what did they do? First some background to teach you the basics of developmental biology
An oocyte (pronounced "oh-oh-sight") is an unfertilized egg and it has no chance of developing into an animal unless it's fertilized. A recently fertilized egg is called a zygote (pronounced "zye-goat"). Funny how the last two letters in the alphabet describe the first stage of an individual animal. For example, a frog zygote normally divides and grows into a complete animal, a tadpole. Later that tadpole will develop into an adult frog.

    State Human Cloning Laws
Link to: Genetic Technologies Project NCSL Genetics Laws and Legislative Activity Updated January 2008 Fifteen states have laws pertaining to human cloning. The issue was first addressed by California legislature, which banned reproductive cloning, or cloning to initiate a pregnancy, in 1997. Since then Arkansas, Connecticut, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Rhode Island, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Virginia have enacted measures to prohibit reproductive cloning. Arizona and Missouri have measures that address the use of public funds for cloning, and Maryland prohibits the use of state stem cell research funds for reproductive cloning and possibly therapeutic cloning depending on how one interprets the definition of human cloning in the statute. Louisiana also enacted legislation that prohibited reproductive cloning, but the law expired in July 2003. Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota and South Dakota laws extend their prohibitions to therapeutic cloning, or cloning for research purposes. Virginia's law also may ban human cloning for any purpose, but it may be open to varying interpretations because the law does not define the term "human being," which is used in the definition of human cloning. Rhode Island law does not prohibit cloning for research, and California and New Jersey human cloning laws specifically permit cloning for the purpose of research.

Now cats may have more than nine lives. The company that funded the first successful cloning of a domestic cat two years ago has gone commercial. Printer Friendly Email to a Friend SHARE Digg StumbleUpon Reddit RELATED An e-mail sent in early February to the company's gene-banking clients offered to clone up to six cats. The cost? U.S. $50,000 each. Clients had less than a month to take advantage of the offer, which ended Friday, February 27. A cloned cat is a unique, newborn animal that shares genes and possibly behavioral tendencies with its genetic predecessor. Ben Carlson, vice president of communications for Genetic Savings and Clone, said four clients signed up to duplicate their cats, and work to reproduce the pets will begin immediately. The privately held company based in Sausalito, California, plans to present the clones to owners in November.

“Clone” derives from the Greek word for “twig”

cloning i cloning and stem-cell research ii ... quickens Advocates for patients, as well as the biotechnology industry, are strongly in support of therapeutic cloning [The history of cloning dates back more than a century to 1891 Naples when Hans Driesch (see also Adolph Eduard Driesch ), in a controversial experiment, separated the blastomeres of a cleaving sea urchin egg.] He picked [sea urchins] because they have large embryo cells, and grow independently of their mothers. Dreich took a 2 celled embryo of a sea urchin and shook it in a beaker full of sea water until the two cells separated. Each grew independently, and formed a separate, whole sea urchin. In 1902, another scientist, embryologist Hans Spemman [or Spemann pic ), used a hair from his infant son as a knife to separate a 2-celled embryo of a salamander, which also grow externally. He later separated a single cell from a 16-celled embryo. In these experiments, both the large and the small embryos developed into identical adult salamanders. Spemann called it twinning If the constriction is not complete and produces only a dumbbell, one may obtain an embryo with a single tail and two complete heads.

You can't open a newspaper these days without reading the word "Cloning". Literally it just means genetic copying, but it conjours up Frankensteinien images - "Boys from Brazil", armies of identical psychopaths, playing God with the miracle of reproduction, and we're told that cloning whole animals is difficult and dangerous. But is this really the truth of the matter? Chaired by Colin Blakemore, the panel consists of Dr Robin Lovell-Badge (MRC), Dr Michael Antoniou (King's College), and Dr Michael West (Advanced Cell Technology).
