Cloning
Updated 29 April 2004, 18.02
Scientific Development
Overview
A US company is getting ready to hand over the world's first cloned pet cats. Five owners have paid $50,000 for kittens cloned from their cherished pets. How would students feel about having a clone? Learning aims
  • What a clone is
  • Whether cloning is ethical
  • Science brings challenges and rewards
1) Icebreaker Click here to read more about the cloned pets What is cloning?
A clone is a copy of a living organism. Identical twins are naturally occurring clones, and plants are often clones of their parent. Imagine you had a clone
If students had a clone of themselves what would they use it for - It looks and sounds exactly like them! List five things the clone could do e.g.
  • Send it to school in your place
  • Make it do chores
  • Teach year nine etc How many of the activities are enjoyable? Dolly the cloned sheep Give themselves marks out of five. The clone looks like them, it sounds like them but as it is an exact copy it also feels like them. How will it feel when it has finished the five tasks it was set? Write an answer in one word. Was it fair to treat the clone like that?

    Human cloning
e-mail story print story Animal cloning has produced some remarkable results within the last few years, which has suggested to some that there should be a way to produce a human clone within the next year. Many news articles have appeared recently highlighting the potential to clone a human baby in order to replace a loved one who died as a newborn. Many social, moral, and ethical arguments have been raised in opposition to copying a person. For more details see AMA's 1999 CEJA Report: The Ethics of Cloning (PDF, 41KB). But perhaps more important is the concern that we do not fully understand the science behind the successes from animal cloning experiments. Animal cloning success (and failure)
Dolly, the sheep, was the first successfully cloned mammal (I. Wilmut et al Nature 1997;385:810). Since 1997, gradual improvements in cloning technology have enabled researchers to generate mouse, cattle, goat, pig, deer, rabbit, cat, mule, and horse clones. While there have been no substantiated evidence for the cloning of humans, recent successes by South Korean researchers in generating stem cells from cloned human embryos (WS Hwang et al Science 2005) have heightened concerns that this scenario is not beyond the realm of possibility.

COURT OF APPEALS RULES CURES WITHOUT CLONING INITIATIVE IS NOT A REPEAL; CAMPAIGN WILL CONTINUE ON TO 2010
JEFFERSON CITY, MO - The Missouri Cures Without Cloning Initiative Campaign (CWC) won a partial legal victory today when the Missouri Court of Appeals ruled that part of Secretary of State Robin Carnahan's ballot summary was "insufficient and unfair." In the opinion, Judge Hardwick stated "Upon review of the Plaintiffs' initiative proposal, we find no language to suggest that it would repeal the ban on human cloning.... The Secretary's introductory language does not fairly summarize any goal or effect of the initiative proposal and is inadequate to give clear notice of its purpose." While this was a big victory for CWC's efforts to present Missouri voters with a clean vote to ban human cloning in Missouri, we are disappointed the court upheld the unsubstantiated prediction that this amendment would limit patients' access to stem cell cures and treatments. There is no basis for this assertion. We are evaluating our options regarding appeal to the Missouri Supreme Court and pursuing relief from the Secretary of State for violation of our constitutional rights. Following is a statement by Lori Buffa, MD, chairwoman of CWC:

It's fairly commonplace for Chinese manufacturers to crank out clones of other popular wares, but apparently, things aren't brushed off as easily when the cloning gets done by a mega-corp like Toshiba. Granted, quite a bit is lost in translation here, but the long and short of it is that NTT DoCoMo and Fujitsu are suing Tosh for creating and selling its which, as you can see above, looks an awful lot like Fujitsu's RakuRaku handset. Reportedly, the plaintiffs have demanded that Softbank Mobile withdraw the 821T from the market, but it seems there's quite a bit more back-and-forth left to go down before the dust settles on this one.

    What is cloning?
The term cloning describes a number of different processes that can be used to produce genetically identical copies of a biological entity. The copied material, which has the same genetic makeup as the original, is referred to as a clone. Researchers have cloned a wide range of biological materials, including genes cells , tissues and even entire organisms, such as a sheep. Top of page
    Do clones ever occur naturally?
Yes. In nature, some plants and single-celled organisms, such as bacteria , produce genetically identical offspring through a process called asexual reproduction. In asexual reproduction, a new individual is generated from a copy of a single cell from the parent organism. Natural clones, also known as identical twins, occur in humans and other mammals. These twins are produced when a fertilized egg splits, creating two or more embryos that carry almost identical DNA . Identical twins have nearly the same genetic makeup as each other, but they are genetically different from either parent.

      Using it
      1. What is it?
g4u ("ghosting for unix") is a NetBSD-based bootfloppy/CD-ROM that allows easy cloning of PC harddisks to deploy a common setup on a number of PCs using FTP. The floppy/CD offers two functions. The first is to upload the compressed image of a local harddisk to a FTP server, the other is to restore that image via FTP, uncompress it and write it back to disk. Network configuration is fetched via DHCP. As the harddisk is processed as an image, any filesystem and operating system can be deployed using g4u. Easy cloning of local disks as well as partitions is also supported. For the curious, I've added a few screenshots:
      • Booting g4u in bochs
      • Device detection
      • Welcome to g4u!
      • Some random g4u commands ...
      • Restoring with slurpdisk
      2. Why not one of the alternatives?
      • Server-part often runs (only) under DOS/Windows. I wanted to use a Unix based server.
      • Supported filesystems include everything from Microsoft, but others are not handled properly (Solaris/x86, NetBSD, ...)

    • Cloning creates a living human embryo, the near-identical twin of the donor. On that essential truth there must be no scientific and political deception. Cloning creates a human embryo solely for research, with its destruction intended - and that is wrong. We must not create one life in order to destroy it for the benefit of another life. An embryo is an embryo, no matter how it is made - whether by natural conception, by IVF, or by cloning. The cloned embryo, even though created ‘asexually', is no different in itself to one created ‘sexually' by ‘egg and sperm', and could, like cloned animals, be brought to birth Don't dehumanize the cloned embryo! No matter whether the embryo is destined for research (so-called ‘therapeutic' cloning) or for birth (so-called ‘reproductive' cloning), in both cases a living embryo is cloned by the standard technique of SCNT (somatic cell nuclear transfer). And please, no word games! Cloning is ‘SCNT' and ‘SCNT' is ... cloning Cloning requires either the harvesting of hundreds of eggs per clone
