So many people express, as their first reaction to the idea of cloning, revulsion and disgust at the idea of having genetic doubles.

Cloning
by Douglas Dunn Douglas Dunn Word Wizards The amazing reports of successfully-cloned adult mammals have been followed by a dialogue that is frightening in its fearful and outrageous tone. Once again we hear a chorus of gnashing teeth bewailing the onset of a "Brave New World" and fears of test-tube manufactured babies and a world populated by robotic armies of genetic sameness. But these cries of fear are not really against cloning at all, but merely against the newness of innovation. In their hearts, human beings know that it is not so terrible to have a genetic double. I am an identical twin, now in my late forties. My brother, Dennis, and I look alike. Many aspects of physical appearance, emotions, mannerisms and behavior are strikingly similar. Even now, when we are out together, people often come up and ask with fascination if we are twins. They also frequently remark how wonderful it must be to have a twin. We are also unique individuals with differing opinions, beliefs and lifestyles. Clones would be no more similar than identical twins. On the contrary, they would be more different

Kirk Updates Position on Embryo Stem Cell Therapies
A multi-disciplinary working group of the SRT Project has produced a report on human stem cell research and embryology , which was debated at the Church of Scotland General Assembly on 23 May 2006. It assessed the scientific developments in adult and embryonic stem cells and cloning, in the context of case studies on their potential use to treat Parkinson's, Huntington's and and motor neurone diseases, diabetes and blood disorders. The report warns against overclaiming the potential of different approaches, which are mostly far from therapeutic application. It re-examines the complex issue of the moral status of the human embryo, recognising the differences of view within the Church. The Assembly agreed with the report's main conclusions :
  • that embryo stem cell research might be permitted up to 14 days, using

    Hackers Clone E-Passports
Kim Zetter Two RFID researchers created a video showing how an RFID reader attached to an improvised explosive device could theoretically identify a U.S. citizen walking past the reader and set off a bomb. They haven't yet tested the theory on a real U.S. passport since the documents have yet to be distributed. The still here shows an attack using a prototype passport with RFID chip placed in the pocket of the victim. As the chip passes the reader, the reader detonates an explosive device placed in the trash can. View Slideshow LAS VEGAS A German computer security consultant has shown that he can clone the electronic passports that the United States and other countries are beginning to distribute this year. The controversial e-passports contain radio frequency ID, or RFID, chips that the U.S. State Department and others say will help thwart document forgery. But Lukas Grunwald, a security consultant with DN-Systems in Germany and an RFID expert, says the data in the chips is easy to copy.
