  • A collection of six shorter novels and stories.

Review Summaries Source Rating Date Reviewer The Observer Russell Davies - Return to top of the page - The complete review 's Review Patrick White's collection of six shorter novels and stories is a fairly somber collection. White compresses the lives he describes into the pages of each tale (in contrast to his expansive novels), without losing substance. In his long novels he is able to offer more, but his talents also shine in the short form. These are, however, fairly dark tales. The eighty-page A Woman's Hand tells the story of the retired Fazackerley's, and the reappearance of a figure from their past, Clem Dowson. They had known one another years earlier in Egypt, under somewhat unusual circumstances. White fleshes out the complex relationships and figures marvelously in the vivid small slices of life he offers here. The complicated personalities are, as usual with White, all too human, and none completely sympathetic, but White captures their whole lives in this short novel. It lingers darkly in the mind.

Cockatoos and African Greys: Are they Really So Different? Part 1 of 2 by Sam Foster and Jane Hallander This article is reprinted from The Pet Bird Report , with permission from the author. It sounds as if these are aliens from two different planets, rather than separate classes of the parrot family. However, what if many of the urban myths about cockatoos and greys are just those urban myths? Maybe these parrots who share 'shades of grey' as their primary coloration have much more in common than we think. Let's take a look at some common misconceptions about cockatoos and greys and the possible reasons behind these misconceptions. Of course, there are exceptions, however the average imported grey or cockatoo, who has no health problems, has already withstood incredible trauma from the capturing process alone. Now it's in a cage, with people who may or may not understand its social needs and yet, there are relatively few who pluck their feathers or become phobic. Why is this? And why do we see few cases of feather plucking among South American and some other Australasian parrot species? There are some who are seldom seen, even out of breeding season, in groups of more than a dozen and others who stay primarily in pairs. Could it not therefore be logical to theorize that the impact of hundreds of thousands of years spent by cockatoos in these assorted environments would have a profound impact on their instinctive behavior, even in a captive environment?

Seventeen years ago, while working as the commercial attache for the American Embassy in Warsaw, I had the opportunity to come to America. I knew I wanted to work around animals, and bird breeding soon became my passion. It gives me the greatest joy to see my baby birds grow to be loving pet birds that enrich others' lives. english fran§ais espa±ol Home Contact us ... Partners You are here: Home What we do Countries Philippines ... Countries BONN: Former cockatoo poachers have become unpaid wardens in the Philippines, a rare role switch to protect a bird they once endangered. Thanks to the efforts of Peter Widdmann, a German Development Service (DED) volunteer and executive director of the Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Programme (PCCP), the birds are being bred in Narra on Palawan's Raza Island in the Sulu Sea. PCCP activists inform the public of the need to preserve the birds and fend off poachers. It is a result of voluntary effort, says UN Volunteer Merlin Espeso, who collects stories of volunteers in action in the Philippines. "These wardens have done their job with passion and for free for more than a year now," she explains after a recent trip to the island. The cockatoo protection programme will feature in video and photo documentaries Ms. Espeso will organize during 2001, the International Year of Volunteers. Her search of other successful volunteer initiatives brought her to Leon, Iloilo, where Grupo Paghidaet volunteers are working for peace. According to Ms. Espeso, the region suffers from years of armed conflict, a culture of violence among community members, domestic violence and economic dislocation. The volunteer group has set up a pilot peace and development project. In January, an audio-visual team will visit and document the project, which is carried out under the direction of lawyer Christopher Montano of the Commission of Human Rights.

Cockatoos are a family of (mostly) large psittaciformes in Australasia, although they range from Australia to the Bismarck Archipelago and the Philippines. They differ from other parrot-like birds in various internal ways (e.g., they have a gall bladder), their downy hatchlings, and the lack of green or blue in their plumage. Thirteen of the 21 cockatoos are white or mostly white, including such large birds as Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (left) of east and north Australia and New Guinea. Cockatoos are striking birds of forest, eucalypt woods, or more open country, depending on species. Coming as I do from the northern hemisphere, I was very impressed by my first view of such a big white bird in flight. The size and manner of flight strongly recalled Snowy Owl to me, and I've had that strange image ever since. Handbook of the Birds of the World Nestoridae The most widespread cockatoo in Australia is Galah (below), with its rosy face and underparts, white crown, and gray upperparts. It was once a bird of the arid interior but, as it is well adapted to open country, has expanded its range with human settlement and agricultural development (Rowley 1997). Galah are sociable birds and can be found in flocks up to 1000 birds. Like most parrots, cockatoos are monogamous and pair for life. These two (below) appeared to be mates.

THE ORDER PSITTACIFORMES is a distinctive group of birds comprising approximately 350 species (Forshaw 1989). Several unique characteristics of the parrots suggest that they compose a monophyletic group, including a distinctive bill and a unique feather pigment (Smith 1975, Dixon 1994). Many classifications of the Psittaciformes have emerged since the classification by Linnaeus in 1758 (Sibley and Ahlquist 1990). Despite this long history, much uncertainty remains about how different groups of parrots are related to one another. The cockatoos, family Cacatuidae, have long been recognized as a unique group within the Psittaciformes (Adams et al. 1984). Morphologically, cockatoos are distinguished from other parrots by having an erectile crest and lacking dyck texture in their feathers, which produces blue and green in the plumage of other parrots. Cockatoos possess a gall bladder, a non-pericyclic iris, paired patches of powder down in the lumbar region, and several other derived characters that separate them from other parrots (Adams et al. 1984). The monophyly of the cockatoos is also supported by karyological (Van Donzen and DeBoer 1984), allozyme (Adams et al. 1984), and DNA sequence data (Madsen et al. 1992).

Dancing Cockatoos: More Like Ashlee Than Jessica Simpson
By Brandon Keim Categories: Animals Mystery Do cockatoos really dance to the music? Or are they just faking it? I sent last week's post to a few ornithologists and asked what they thought. First to respond was University of Arizona evolutionary biologist John Pepper , who wrote his PhD thesis on the behavioral ecology of glossy black cockatoos: The question we can't answer by watching these videos is whether the cockatoos are responding to the music, or responding to their owner.
They are intensely social and interactive birds. They are especially interactive with a person they know well. But even as a stranger you can easily elicit this kind of behavior. If you walk into a pet store and interact with any parrot, make eye contact, and talk to it, and then start bobbing your head, chances are good that it will start bobbing its head along with you. Try it!
I suspect that in most cases, while the video is being shot, but outside the picture, the bird's owner is dancing along with the bird, and encouraging it.

Cockatoos account for 17 of the 330 known species of parrots. These species once occurred naturally in Australia, New Guinea, the islands of Indonesia, the Solomon Islands, and the Philippines. The Australian species include the Greater Sulfur Crested, the Gang Gang, Galah (Rose Breasted) Leadbeaters (Major Mitchell's), Bare-eyed, Slenderbilled (Longbilled), Glossy Black, Red-tailed Black, Yellow-tailed Black, White-tailed Black, and the Black Palm. The Indonesian, New Guinea, and other island species include the Umbrella, Lesser Sulfur, Citron, Moluccan, Goffins, Triton, Eleonora, Blue-eyed, Ducrops, and Red-vented.
All cockatoos have moveable crest feathers. Cockatoos not only differ from other parrots because they are crested, but for a few exceptions, they are either black or white. This is caused by the lack of the Dyck texture in their feathers. In other parrots the presence of this feature produces color by the way it reflects light. Cockatoos also lack oil glands, but they do produce a fine powder which is the result of the breakdown of their down feathers. You can always tell if there's a cockatoo in the house look at the TV; it has white powder on the screen. A word of warning this powder can aggravate respiratory problems in some people.
Domestically bred hand-fed babies acquired just after weaning make the best pets. Unweaned babies (still eating formula) can cost less but it is best to let experienced individuals handle the weaning process properly. The larger species, such as the Greater Sulfur Crested or the Moluccan could cost from $1800 to $3000. Smaller members of this group can run from $800 up to $1800.

A parrot is a great pet, but require more work than most pets. From the huge cockatoo and macaw to the humble budgie and lovebird, parrots have very special needs.
When people think about owning a parrot they tend to think about the big parrots: the cockatoo and the macaw. Certainly the various cockatoo and macaw species make impressive pet birds, but they come with special challenges and requirements. Parrot cages for macaws take up lots of space, and few people have the space to build a parrot aviary. Even fewer have the time needed to keep a large cockatoo happy, and it's a rare neighbor indeed who doesn't mind the noise a large parrot makes. Fortunately, pet birds come in many sizes. Beautiful and intelligent though the large parrots are, they certainly aren't for everyone. Parrots as a species range from lovebirds and budges up to the hyacinth macaw, a monster of a bird measuring four feet from beak to tail-tip.

Australia's Red-tailed Black Cockatoo
By Lloyd Marshall Australia's Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife would like for American aviculturists to be able to buy aviary-bred red-tailed black cockatoos, calyptorhynchus banksii , from Australia. Darwin bird breeder Peter McGrath and Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife conservation management officer Simon Stirrat are keen to see the export trade get underway. McGrath has been involved with the birds since 1989, when he started applying for permission to catch wild birds so that he could establish a captive breeding program. In 1992 he began building aviaries on a mango farm outside Darwin, the capital of Australia's Northern Territory. He now has around 130 birds on the property - 40 breeding pairs, 35 youngsters and around 15 unmated birds. The 60 aviaries housing the red-tailed black cockatoo - 7 meters by 2.4 meters by 3 meters (about 23 feet by 8 feet by 10 feet) high suspended breeding cages and 7 meters by 4 meters by 2.7 meters (about 23 feet by 13 feet by 9 feet) holding cages have reticulated water and a full-time caregiver who also looks after the mango trees on the farm.
