Tools Enlarge image Annual soil loss in Australia Melbourne LAND clearing, cropping, grazing and other agricultural activities are altering Australia's environment to such an extent that native species are moving well beyond their usual ranges and turning into pests. State of the Environment 1996 , a report produced for the government by an independent advisory council and released in Canberra this week, claims that "native species outside their natural range may pose as serious a threat to biodiversity as exotic species. Many are spreading beyond their usual habitat or increasing in abundance due to human activities." One of the worst offenders is the galah, a pink and grey cockatoo. Once confined to river systems, it has spread throughout the country due to the abundance of water in farm dams and animal troughs. In southwestern Australia, the galah is competing for nesting sites and destroying the eggs of another native bird, Carnaby's cockatoo, which has disappeared from a third of its range over the last 25 years.

Having been a parrot breeder and trainer of parrots, specializing in macaws, cockatoos, and african greys since 1983, I have designed and developed this web site to share my experience in parrots, and to help others better understand and care for these amazing and intelligent creatures. Aviculture and keeping larger parrots as pets has gained tremendous popularity. In fact, the prevalence of parrots as pets is precedented only by dogs and cats. Yet understanding the intelligence and needs, both physical and psychological, of parrots is still in its infancy in many parts of the world. Although I have raise most species of macaws, cockatoos, african grey parrots, and conures in the past years, I have, in recent years sold all of my breeding pairs except the macaws. The macaw species that I now breed include hyacinth macaws, blue and gold macaws, catalina macaws, harlequin macaws, ruby macaws, and green wing macaws. I may continue to reduce the number of pairs that I have, but I intend to continue raising and breeding macaws, including Hyacinth macaws for a few more years. Somehow, I can't imagine life without my parrots. I will continue to maintain and add to this web site in an effort to educate people about the care and training of parrots and help people that have parrots with behavioral and health problems. While I don't intend to help people avoid veterinary care for their pets, I will help to diagnose problems in an effort to aid veterinarians in the consideration of possibilities.

Cockatoos might halt pulp mill project
A $650 million Australian pulp mill project might be halted by the red-tail black cockatoo, although the bird has never been seen at the planned site.
The Environment Department in Canberra says the project needs federal approval because the rare cockatoo feeding area is about 2.5 miles from the construction site, The Australian newspaper reported.
The Southern Australia project is expected to generate more than 600 jobs during construction and permanently employ 120 people.
The Penola Pulp Mill's project manager told The Australian he was alarmed by the government's action, given that federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell had blocked a Victorian wind farm because of a perceived threat to the orange-bellied parrot.

ORANGE COCKATOOS
by Wally Van Sickle
Stubby, stout wings lift the Philippine cockatoos Cacatua haematuropygia off a rice field late in the day. They make their way east, away from the setting sun towards the shoreline lined with palm trees. Small groups gather in flight. Preparing for their nightly activities, they fearlessly head out over the open water and noisily fly past the fishing boats.
As the birds approach, the orange sunlight paints a special glow on Rasa Island (20 km2 in size). A few of the birds stop to rest in larger trees and inspect cavities that could serve as nest structures. Others cavort through the canopy stopping from time to time to express their presence. From a distance only white flashing specks can be seen against the backdrop of an orange-tinted jungle.
Most of the cockatoos head toward the far eastern edge of Rasa Island where the biggest trees reside and there is the least amount of human disturbance. Once they arrive, they will select their favorite roosting branch and spend the evening safe from the dangers of the mainland.
When morning comes, they will once again travel over the sea to the big island of Palawan where they will spend the day foraging. Their estimated population in the wild is less than 1000 animals.

A Tale of Two Cockies
About eight years ago a wild Australian Sulphur Crested Cockatoo flew into a car and broke its wing. The motorist took it to the Vet in Nerang, Queensland, who had to amputate the wing. We adopted her - for which we needed a National Parks and Wildlife permit - and kept her in a cage outside where she was often visited by wild Cockatoos. One of the things that impressed us was how she would push lettuce leaves through the bars of the cage, offering food to visitors.
Last Sunday 23 July 2006, she again had a visitor.
As usual he spent a lot of time sitting on the cage with a tamper proof latch.
There was a lot of talking and grooming. A bloke has to look presentable when courting a bird!
Things got interesting when he approached the front door. . .
The clever fellow figured out how to undo the tamper proof latch!
He opened the door for a lot of mutual grooming and food sharing...
Oooh that's nice! Scratch a bit more on that side, dear...
He was not shy to get into the cage and would go in and out a number of times.

Cockatoo Bathing and Species-Specific Behavior Donna Hefton Many common misconceptions and myths have been linked with parrots. For instance, the "myth of the Amazons" as being a massive and nasty green parrot that would sooner take your finger off as look at you. The misconceptions and myths have emerged in regard to bathing the cockatoo. You may have educated yourself in the study of the avian psyche, the avian quirks and habits that make our birds who and what they are. Through your education you can better understand the myths for what they are and the misconceptions for what they may be. Showering the cockatoo has its many myths and misconceptions and the focus of this article is to dispel some of the ideas we have assigned to this particular genus. Cockatoos are certainly one of the most stunningly beautiful parrots after a good bath. The plumage of the 'Toos is unique to them, with longer contour feathers when compared to other psittacines and broad primary and secondary flight feathers that make them the astounding fliers that they are. Keeping this gorgeous plumage in good order is a full-time occupation for the cockatoo and, without the ability to properly bathe, a cockatoo may tend to over preen the feathers which can lead to shredding, tearing, and eventually plucking out the feathers. If ignored, plucking of the feathers can manifest into tissue mutilation and in resultant infections of the skin. The geographic distribution of some of our most popular cockatoo species surprises some people when they realize that their species of cockatoo has genetically developed in areas outside of the continent of Australia. While Australia is quite renowned for its cockatoo flocks, the most commonly kept species of cockatoos in the United States may have never set one zygodactic foot on the soil of Australia in terms of evolutionary development. It becomes difficult to evaluate whether some species were displaced naturally, perhaps by monsoons and hurricanes, to islands in places that many of us have never heard of, or whether they naturally occurred in these regions.

Basic information on the Cockatoo and species profiles.

@import url(http://www.homestead.com/~media/elements/Text/font_styles.css); The Cockatoo
Basic Information

Cockatoos are large parrots that are native to Australia and the islands of the South Pacific. There are a few different species of Cockatoos that range in size from about 11 inches to 30 inches tall. They are very long lived, living 60-90 years in captivity. They have a bald patch on top of their heads covered with a crest that they can raise and lower. The crest's position is often an indication to the bird's mood. Cockatoos are powder-down birds, producing a dust from their feathers that can be quite heavy sometimes.
Intense Needs
Most Cockatoos are very intelligent, can be affectionate, and can have a lot of energy. They are generally quite vocal and loud. Due to their intelligence, Cockatoos are known for being able to escape from their cages, undo locks, and work through intricate puzzles. They love to chew and can destroy toys and other household objects very quickly. Their beaks are powerful and when aggressive, they can do serious physical damage to their caretakers. As with many species of parrots, Cockatoos often mate for life and bond very strongly to their caretakers as mates. This can be problematic because these birds expect a lot of physical and emotional attention from their mates, and these needs are often difficult to meet in captivity. Of all parrot species, I believe that Cockatoos require the most time and attention to meet their intense social and intellectual needs.
