So you have the coin collecting bug and are not sure what to do to get started. The following is a list of things to consider when developing your collection:
  • Choose a collection within your price range! Many people start their collections with pennies because small cents are generally plentiful and affordable. If you choose a collection outside of your price range you may get discouraged and not complete your set. Decide if you want to collect rated or raw coins. If you want to buy raw coins and then send them in for rating later, you may be disappointed in the grades that your coins receive. If grading is important to you, start off buying graded coins. It will save you money and heartache over the long haul. You are generally protected from fraud if you buy rated coins. Decide if you want to register your set. Both PCGS and NGC offer world class set registries. And best of all, they are free! You can register your set and compare it to other sets from around the world.
