Cold War: Melting Point
From Valve Developer Community
It's late October 1962, the height of the Cold War. Soviet ships carrying nuclear weapons have run a US blockade around the island of Cuba. The US immediately responded by landing forces in Cuba. Soviet forces in Europe begin to gather strength for an assault on the Fulda Gap. This is where it begins. The Cold War has reached its melting point. Cold War: Melting Point (CW:MP) is a multiplayer modification that focus around its unique time period and gameplay features. Never before has this time period been touched by first person shooters, and never before has a multiplayer game had such a dynamic campaign system that allows for wholly different experiences each time the game is played. Aside from the dynamic campaign system, CW:MP also has many other unique features, such as its class system, stamina system, and clan-friendly save system. The first public release will include a basic campaign based around the war in Cuba. Future releases will include larger scale campaigns based in Europe, Russia, Asia, and other locations. New Perspectives on the Cold War by Stephen Browne The Soviet Union never intended to leave us alone; their goal was always to conquer us. Our intelligence capability, as misused as it sometimes was, was a major factor in keeping the peace. I first came to Poland in 1991. Since then I have lived and worked in Bulgaria and Yugoslavia and have traveled frequently in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Belarus. On the whole I've been happy in Eastern Europe; I've bought an apartment in downtown Warsaw, married, and fathered a child here. Stephen Browne is a teacher and freelance writer who has lived in Eastern Europe since 1991. So what was the Cold War all about and how did we come to win it? The place to find an answer to this question is to determine what we know for sure, what we can reasonably suppose from the available evidence, and what the most plausible speculations are based on the first two categories. What we know to a fair degree of certainty is coming to light through such sources available in English as the Venona Transcripts, the Mitrokhin Archives, the testimony of high-ranking defectors such as Col. Kuklinski of the Polish army General Staff. More are becoming available as new sources are declassified or translated from Eastern European sources and as former mid- to high-level personnel of the old Soviet hegemony publish their personal memoirs.

Berlin Airlift Although, the “Cold War” lasted for decades, the first major test of the Free World's will to resist Soviet aggression came in June 1948 when Soviet authorities, claiming "Technical difficulties," halted all traffic by land and by water into or out of the western-controlled section of Berlin. The only remaining access routes into the city were three 20 mile-wide air corridors across the Russian zone of Germany. Faced with the choice of abandoning the city or attempting to supply its inhabitants with the necessities of life by air, the Western Powers chose the latter course and for the next 11 months sustained the city's 2 1/2 million residents in one of the greatest feats in aviation history. C-47s carried 80 tons of food into Berlin, far less than the estimated 4,500 tons of food, coal, and other material needed daily to maintain a minimum level of existence. But this force was soon augmented by U.S. Navy and Royal Air Force cargo aircraft. On Oct. 15, 1948 to promote increased safety and cooperation between the separate U.S. and British airlift efforts, the Allies created a unified command, the Combined Airlift Task Force under Maj. Gen. William H. Tunner, USAF. To underscore Allied determination to resist Soviet pressure, three SAC bomb groups were sent to Europe, placing Soviet targets well within

Overview
WHITE STAR was a clandestine operation, under the auspices of the CIA, but thru the Ambassador to Laos to "assist" Laos in fighting the communists. The teams worked with the Laotian people, mainly the Hmoungs and other ethnic groups. It was all designed to support Vang Pao's Armee Clandestine which was supported by CIA/Air Americas Projects 404 and 603. LTC "Bull" Simons was the Group I commander of the first group inserted in July 1959, then called "Hotfoot", and remained for the next group (II) in Dec 59 to June of 60 when he was replaced by LTC Magnus L. Smith. In November 1960, Group IV took over, commanded by LTC John "Shark" Little, and on 28Jan61 it was augmented with a 12-man Psywar team under LTC Chuck Murray. In April of 1961, Group V replaced Group IV and was renamed "White Star". In October of 1961 LTC Bull Simons took command again.

Cold War
VS During the waning hours of World War Two, a different type of war began. A Cold War of ideas and politics, of economies and technologies. The Cold War was not one event, but rather a series of events connected together by the rivalry and polarization between the communist and capitalist systems. The Cold War was fought by third parties in developing lands and by scientists and heroes in a race for the moon. It was the build up of nuclear arsenals and the delicate balance that kept the world from teetering. The timeline below presents a brief summary of the major events of the Cold War. Areas of colder relation indicate times at which the ideologies and policies of the United States and the USSR were at their most divisive, the warmer relations indicate times at which cultural exchange and cooperation helped ease the nuclear tension. Senator Joe McCarthy's excesses, both real and imagined, are well-known and have earned him a place of infamy in recent political history. However, newly declassified documents and other previously unavailable sources are creating a consensus among historians that there was, indeed, a secret communist espionage ring that operated at very high levels in the U. S. government. Many peopleincluding Dan Ratherwhether for ideological or personal reasons, still refuse to believe this. Rather also continues to defend convicted spy, Alger Hiss, even though almost all historians believe he was guilty. "I had been amazed for some time, and would remain so, by how wrong, how out of touch, and how behind the Carter and (perhaps to a greater degree) Reagan and Bush administrations were about the real developments within the Soviet Union."

THE COLD WAR AS GLOBAL A CONFLICT
The Project questioned the usual chronology and geography of the Cold War as an East-West conflict that began with the end of World War II and ended in 1989. That interpretation does not provide a way of understanding decolonization, national liberation, social revolution and civil war, development and underdevelopment, and the racial and ethnic conflict seemingly endemic to the international system that followed the Cold War. The project placed the multiple connections between the Cold War and the globalized present at the heart of its collective inquiry. Every aspect of the terms "Cold War" and "globalization" are open to question, starting with their assumed spatial and temporal dimensions, origins, objectives, and even protagonists. The Cold War as Global Conflict Project was directed by Marilyn Young and co-directed by Allen Hunter . The Roots of the Cold War
Although it can be argued that the Cold War began with the success of the Bolshevik Revolution, it was in the aftermath of World War II that the former wartime allies confronted each other in order to win the ideological and often bloody conflict for the role of world leader. What were the roots of the Cold War and what were the consequences for the global order?
Dr David Eldridge.  University of Hull.
Senator Joe McCarthy and Cold War America
As the Cold War escalated, both the Soviet Union and the United States looked ‘in’ on themselves, seeking out those they suspected of colluding with the enemy. In the USA, many politicians ‘jumped on the anti-communist bandwagon’, often to enhance their career. Foremost amongst those was Senator Joseph McCarthy whose name is inextricably attached to this period. This paper examines the impact and consequences of McCarthyism and the Cold War for ‘domestic’ America.
Dr.Jenel Virden, University of Hull.

Nuclear Age, 1945-present
The postwar organization of atomic energy took place against the backdrop of growing tension with the Soviet Union. Relations between the United States and the Soviet Union had been strained ever since the revolution of 1917 had first brought communists to power in Russia. This mutual distrust further deepened following the Soviet "non-aggression" treaty with Nazi Germany in August 1939 and the Soviet Union's subsequent invasions of Poland, Finland, and the Baltic Republics. Although Britain was allied with the Soviet Union following Germany's June 1941 invasion of Russia, as was the United States in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, mutual suspicion lingered throughout the Second World War. The failure of the United States and Britain to tell the Soviet Union about the atomic bomb in anything other than the most vague terms only heightened the extreme suspicions of the Soviet dictator, Joseph Stalin (right). Not only did the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki help end the Second World War, but they also played a role in setting the stage for the half-century of conflict with the Soviet Union that followed it the Cold War.

Much needs to be said and remembered about the air war over the cold, mountainous Korean Peninsula during the period of 1950 through 1953. Fighters with oddly poetic names like Saberjet, Starfire, Panther, and Shooting Star shared the skies with older rotary engine fighters, bombers, and transports left over from the 2nd World War. They fought both the latest Soviet-built MiGs, as well as more venerable aircraft in a battle that oftentimes teetered on the edge of disaster. The B-29 Superfortress were shot down at an alarming rate, for instance. Other aircraft, such as the F4-U Corsair, and the B-26 Invader, did well in their given roles. Overall, however, the deeds performed so long ago and half a world away has been sadly ignored by both historians and the general public. The blood chit shown here was issued from about 1951 through 1958, although other designs were used in Korea. The languages on this one are Persian, Turkish, Italian, Finish, Serbo-Croatian, German, French, Swedish, Arabic, Greek, Polish, English, and Russian.

The Cold War was the period of conflict, tension and competition between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies from the mid-1940s until the early 1990s. Throughout the period, the rivalry between the two superpowers was played out in multiple arenas: military coalitions; ideology , psychology, and espionage ; sports; military, industrial, and technological developments, including the space race ; costly defence spending; a massive conventional and nuclear arms race ; and many proxy wars There was never a direct military engagement between the US and the Soviet Union, but there was half a century of military buildup as well as political battles for support around the world, including significant involvement of allied and satellite nations in proxy wars. Although the US and the Soviet Union had been allied against Nazi Germany , the two sides differed on how to reconstruct the postwar world even before the end of World War II . Over the following decades, the Cold War spread outside Europe to every region of the world, as the US sought the "
