Colds and Flu
Common respiratory infections include the apparently similar cases of common cold and the flu, since the symptoms are almost identical, it becomes very difficult to determine which one you may be suffering from. In general, a common cold sets in very slowly and it takes some time for the symptoms to appear, in comparison the flu is quite sudden in setting in and a person is stricken with the symptoms very quickly, which is to say that in cases of flu, feeling alright in the morning is no guarantee that you will feel fine in the afternoon as well, it may hit you in that short span of time. The typical symptoms connected and identified with the common cold include: physical discomfort like nasal congestion, the appearance of a sore throat and resultant pain , and regular sneezing, these symptoms of the common cold are in general milder than those that are experienced during flu, though they have many similarities. The symptoms during affliction with the flu include besides those mentioned above, a fever that may come on immediately with the other signs, a feeling of acute

Colds in Cats and Kittens

Is it a runny nose and cold, or respiratory infection?
Cats get colds, just like you and me, however cats have their
own virus that is unique to their species. This means we can't "catch"
colds from cats, and neither can they "catch" colds from us.
Cats experience much the same symptoms as we do when we
have a cold. They get snotty runny noses, runny eyes, sneezing, temperature etc. And like humans they also are susceptible to the sinus and chest infections that are sometimes the result with a humans cold. These infections are called secondary infections. It is important that when your kitten gets a cold that that they receive the proper treatment. Follow your vet's recommendations. Your cat cannot blow it's nose, so you need to keep the mucous and discharge clean by wiping the nose as needed with a damp, warm rag or tissue. Be gentle! Just like in humans, a cat cold will last from 7 to 10 days. Many cats will also refuse to eat when having a cold.

26. Colds And Sinus
Decongestants and cough medicine in the treatment of colds and Sinus
http://www.entusa.com/colds_sinus.htm
At one time or another, patients have blamed almost all discomforts of the head and neck on "Sinus". However, the term "Sinus" means a bony cavity next to the nasal passageway and its medical usage should be reserved for conditions involving this structure. It is a location not a medical condition. A "Cold" refers to an infection of the nose and throat. It is usually viral but may also be caused by a bacteria. Usually, patients with colds are febrile, have malaise (feels sick) and myalgias (sore muscles).
Types of Over-The-Counter Medications
List Of Over-The-Counter Medications
The Nonprescription Drugs Advisory Committee of the Federal Drug Authority (FDA) has issued a warning against using cold and sinus medications in young children and children under two years of age. Specifically: Do not give cough medicine to children under 2 years of age. Too much medicine may cause serious life threatening side effects. Over dosage can occur if two medicines have the same type of ingredients.

Last Revision Date: April 2002 Common Questions, Quick Answers What is a cold?
  • Colds are an infection of the upper respiratory tract. It is a mild infection but is very common. It is sometimes called "the common cold."
What causes it?
  • Colds are caused by a viral infection. Your child cannot "catch a cold" by standing out in the rain, not wearing a hat in cold weather, or losing sleep.
Who can get it?
  • Children tend to get colds more often than adults do. Children in school or day care are more likely to get colds because infections are spread easily in classrooms and closed spaces. Children's symptoms tend to be worse than adults' symptoms. The cold season in the U.S. starts in August or September and ends around April or May. But, colds can happen any time of the year.
What are the signs and symptoms?

However, because these viruses are so widespread, it is perhaps more accurate to say that colds are caused by a decrease in immunity that allows one of these viruses to take hold. Colds occur more frequently in winter, but no one knows exactly why. Nearly everyone catches colds occasionally, but some people catch colds quite frequently, and others tend to stay sick an unusually long time. Influenza B, commonly called the flu, occurs in the form of a worldwide epidemic every winter. The predominant symptoms of flu are fever, malaise, and muscle aches. Cold-like respiratory symptoms are usually fairly minor with the flu. However, a dangerous type of pneumonia can develop as a complication of influenza, especially in seniors.

Megadoses of vitamin C are controversial. The controversy surrounding vitamin C swirls around the discussion of Vitamin C and the common cold. Many studies have shown that Vitamin C is quite effective in treating and preventing colds. The medical profession is not very interested. The popular media always seem to take the same position. It goes something like this:
  • A study shows positive results
  • The results are discussed
  • The story ends with the warning of taking too much C and that we are all probably better off just eating a proper diet.
It is all such a shame. Linus Pauling's first and second books about vitamin C, Vitamin C and the Common Cold and its follow-up Vitamin C the Common Cold and the Flu explain in great detail the relationship between a colds severity and our vitamin C status. Pauling's work was met with a great deal of controversy and skepticism. Please see the editorial Vitamin C, RDA's and Politics

Evaluation of Echinacea for the Prevention and Treatment of the Common Cold: A Meta-Analysis (The Lancet: Infectious Diseases)
In the latest twist, a review of more than 700 studies has concluded that echinacea has a substantial effect in preventing colds and in limiting their duration. The paper , published in the July issue of The Lancet Infectious Diseases, used statistical techniques to combine the results of existing studies and reach conclusions based on the larger sample that resulted. The researchers selected only those trials that used randomized and placebo-controlled techniques: 14 studies involving 1,356 participants for the number of colds and 1,630 for the prevention of colds. The studies varied in the dosages of the herb, the duration it was taken and the species of echinacea used, and the number of participants ranged from 40 to more than 300.

More than 200 different viruses are known to cause the symptoms of the common cold. Some, such as the rhinoviruses, seldom produce serious illnesses. Others, such as parainfluenza and respiratory syncytial virus, produce mild infections in adults but can cause severe lower respiratory infections in young children. Viruses cause infection by overcoming the body's complex defense system. The body's first line of defense is mucus, produced by the membranes in the nose and throat. Mucus traps the material we inhale: pollen, dust, bacteria and viruses. When a virus penetrates the mucus and enters a cell, it takes over the protein-making machinery to manufacture new viruses which, in turn, attack surrounding cells. How common is the common cold?
