Composting: what can be composted
Any plant residue can be composted, including weeds, lawn clippings, spent plants, leafy prunings and clippings, vegetable tops and vines, manure, sawdust and non-glossy newsprint. Composting materials are divided into two types, green and brown. Green materials include green leafy plant residues like weeds, grass clippings, vegetable tops and flower clippings. Brown materials include fall leaves, straw, sawdust, wood chips and shredded newspapers. To speed up decomposition, use two-parts green material to one-part brown material. Grass clippings can be composted, but it's best to mulch them and leave them on the lawn. This recycles nutrients and decreases the amount of lawn fertilizer needed. If you compost your grass clippings, mix them with brown materials to prevent over-packing, which leads to obnoxious odors. Brown materials composted alone require supplemental nitrogen to feed the decomposing bacteria. Add one-quarter to one-half cup nitrogen fertilizer per bushel of brown material. Woody materials also require extra composting time. It's probably easier to suggest materials you should NOT compost. Don't use meat, bones, cooking-oil products, eggs and dairy products. These materials slow decomposition and may attract rodents and other animal pests. You also should not compost pet feces, as they may spread diseases.

Composting
Composting offers a YIMBY (Yes! In My Back Yard) solution to the organic components of the municipal solid waste stream. Yard trimmings make up at least 13% of what households put out for disposal. Food wastes comprise another 10% of the total waste volume. That works out to about 200 pounds of yard trimmings and another 150 pounds of food waste per person per year. These 2 segments alone can reduce our total waste volume by almost one fourth and yield an end product - COMPOST, that is a valuable soil amendment.
What is Composting
Composting is the biological decomposition of organic matter. Decomposition occurs naturally, but it can be accelerated. Microorganisms, worms, and insects break organic materials into compost. Compost contains nutrients that, when returned to the soil, are used by plants. This is nature's way of recycling.
What Can Be Composted
Any natural organic material can be composted. Examples are grass clippings, weeds, tree leaves, hedge clippings, straw, livestock manures and kitchen waste Also, many manufactured organic materials that are not waxed or plastic-coated, such as newspapers, paper boxes, clothing scraps and wood shavings are compostable and may be used.

COMPOSTING PROCESS
Composting is nature's way of recycling. Composting biodegrades organic waste. i.e. food waste, manure, leaves, grass trimmings, paper, wood, feathers, crop residue etc., and turns it into a valuable organic fertilizer. Composting is a natural biological process, carried out under controlled aerobic conditions (requires oxygen). In this process, various microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi, break down organic matter into simpler substances. The effectiveness of the composting process is dependent upon the environmental conditions present within the composting system i.e. oxygen, temperature, moisture, material disturbance, organic matter and the size and activity of microbial populations. Composting is not a mysterious or complicated process. Natural recycling (composting) occurs on a continuous basis in the natural environment. Organic matter is metabolized by microorganisms and consumed by invertebrates. The resulting nutrients are returned to the soil to support plant growth.

Mow your lawn often and let the clippings lie. This is the best use for grass clippings. Composting is another solution. Composting is a practical and convenient way to handle yard trimmings such as leaves, grass, thatch, chipped brush, and plant cuttings. It can be easier and cheaper than bagging or paying to have them removed. Compost also improves your soil and the plants growing in it. If you have a garden, a lawn, trees, shrubs, or even planter boxes, you have a use for compost.
Why Does Compost Make Soil Healthier?
Compost returns organic matter to the soil in a usable form. Organic matter in the soil improves plant growth by: stimulating the growth of beneficial microorganisms, loosening heavy clay soils to allow better root penetration; improving the capacity to hold water and nutrients particularly in sandy soils; and adding essential nutrients to any soil. Improving your soil is the first step toward improving plant health. Healthy plants help clean air, conserve soil, and beautify landscapes.

Develop a routine of adding organic materials to the garden regularly. Many materials, including fallen leaves, leaf mold, home grown compost, shredded newspaper, green cover crops, bark, sawdust, and purchased compost will improve soil. Dig these materials in when preparing a new garden, and use them as mulch. Making compost is a great place to begin stewardship gardening. and can range from backyard composting of green matter from the landscape and garden to composting with worms to reduce the volume of household waste. Additional composting information is also available through the manure exchange program - a network that moves valuable organic material from farms to small gardens to protect valuable groundwater resources.

Sheet Mulching
Posted in Learning by admin on April 29, 2008. Sheet Mulching is simply a way to eliminate unwanted weeds in a given area, using a protective layer of recycled materials such as newspaper or cardboard, covering the area with seedless organic materials (such as wormcastings, straw animal bedding (usually has few seeds) or simply sawdust) for seedless soil or mulch to be gardened in (most often edible perennials). While most people understand a lot about weeding and even more about tilling, not too many people think about the prospect of never weeding, or simply avoiding tilling all together. Sheet mulching however, can both make life easier and replenish soil without ever using chemical fertilizers, weed kill or tilling. There really isnt much to sheet mulching, just think like a really big cold pile that is going to compost itself overtime, turning all the weeds, seed and other organic matter under it, into a nutrient rich soil base, that built itself onsite, usually over winter. First of all, mow down, roll over, stamp down, cut with a scythe or machete, and pile on all the kitchen scraps, doggy/kitty wastes or yard debris you can, mixing all those nitrogens and carbons as they come, mother nature knows how to tend it on her own with microorganisms and worms.

Nature's Way of Recycling
By recycling the organic waste created by your household into compost, it allows you to return badly needed organic matter to your soil. In this way, we participate in nature's cycle, and cut down on garbage going into burgeoning landfills. And, unlike some fertilizers, compost will not run off your yard and pollute Austin's creeks and waterways. You can make compost by mixing and decomposing organic matter made from leaves, grass clippings, wood chips and fruit and vegetable scraps. How Does it Work? Tools you may need: shovel or pitchfork to turn the pile; compost thermometer to help monitor pile heat (optional).
Recipe for Easy Compost:
  • Put different yard trimmings such as leaves and grass clippings in a bin or pile. You should have a mix of green material and brown material. Add water so the pile is slightly damp. “Turn” the pile at least once a month. The pile should reach a temperature of 130 to 160 degrees and will be ready in 6 to 9 months. The more frequently you turn the pile, the faster your compost will be ready.

    40. Composting And Mulching: A Guide To Managing Organic Yard Wastes
This 16page publication is a comprehensive guide for anyone wanting to learn about composting, building a compost area and how composting works.
    http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/DG3296.html
BU-03296 Reviewed 2008 To Order Composting is a microbial process that converts plant materials such as grass clippings and leaves to a more usable organic soil amendment or mulch. Gardeners have used compost for centuries to increase soil organic matter, improve soil physical properties, and supply some of the essential nutrients for plant growth. Mulching refers to the practice of applying a layer of materials such as compost, leaves, or grass clippings to the soil surface in order to modify soil temperature and moisture as well as control weeds and soil erosion. Because many communities ban outdoor burning and have laws that prohibit dumping of leaves and grass clippings into landfills, composting and mulching have become attractive ways to manage yard waste and recycle natural materials. Grass clippings and leaves can be hauled to city composting areas as one means of disposal. However, many homeowners may find it more convenient and economical to compost these materials in their own backyards. In either case, the finished compost can be used as a mulch or as a soil amendment to improve most garden soils. The information in this bulletin will help you learn how to build and maintain a compost pile as well as how to use the compost in the yard and garden.
