Composting
Composting refers to the process of combining organic materials such as weeds, grass clippings, and food scraps under conditions that enhance the rate at which they decompose. In the United States, organic wastes make up 20% to 40% of what we throw away. Composting provides an opportunity to keep these organic materials out of landfills and incinerators, using them instead to create a useful end product. Of course, composting isn't as easy as simply throwing organic waste into big piles and waiting for it to decompose. If moist food scraps or grass clippings are placed in a container and left to sit for a week or two, the result is likely to be a stinky mess that attracts flies. Given the proper conditions, these same organic materials can be composted to produce a material that looks and smells like rich soil and is prized by gardeners. Clearly the second option is preferable, and the key question is how to provide the proper conditions for problem-free composting. The answer lies in paying attention to moisture content, airflow, and the mixture between materials that are high in carbon and those that are high in nitrogen. Investigation of these factors offers many possibilities for student research focusing on the biology, chemistry, and physics of composting.

Easy to Install, No water, No Sewer, No Septic Needed Easy to Use and Maintain Environmentally Friendly- No Possible Groundwater Contamination
Sun Mar Toilets can be an excellent alternative to conventional commodes where circumstances do not allow for septic systems or water connections. Some have been installed in cabins and homes that have rocky soil that does not permit a septic system drain field or homes in close proximity to lakes, rivers and streams.
Some have chosen them over a conventional flush toilet to avoid septic tank construction that requires the elimination of trees and could contaminate ground or well water used for drinking. Others have wanted to make their home more eco friendly or green.
Others have added them where water and sewer connections are not available such as pool cabanas and barns. The Space Saver Model works well in a small closet or basement for those needing an extra commode in the house but do not want to dig up the foundation for the sewer line required by a conventional toilet.
Whatever your reason for considering a Sun Mar toilet you will find that they are easy to install, use and maintain. You will also be rewarded with rich compost that you may use on your trees and flowers while knowing that you are doing something good for the environment.

Introduction
An acceptable system of disposal for dead birds is essential to any well run poultry farm operation. Moreover, Virginia law requires that poultry producers have an approved means for disposing of dead birds. There are generally two categories of disposal problems: (1) Normal mortality, which is typically about 0.1 percent per day, but fluctuations up to 0.25 percent per day are not uncommon, and (2) Whole flock disposal. Research at the University of Maryland, and field application in other poultry states, have shown that normal mortality can be handled efficiently and safely by composting dead poultry. Composting is a natural process in which beneficial organismsbacteria and fungireduce and transform organic wastes into a useful end productcompostwhich can be used as a fertilizer and soil amendment. Although simple in concept and design, dead poultry composters require attention to detail and careful management. Effective July 1, 1992 properly constructed and properly managed dead bird composters are an acceptable method of handling normal flock mortality in Virginia. Composting is not recommended for whole flock disposal cases. Such cases require special permission and supervision from the Virginia State Veterinarian's Office.

Composting with Redworms Many homeowners have some kind of home composting system in operation. However, people living in condominiums, apartments and other residences don’t have a suitable place to start a compost pile. These people feel left out on a worthwhile cause, and need alternative ways to be part of the composting program. There is a solution! Kitchen wastes can be converted to a rich humus with the help of redworms. Children find worms fascinating. They are very well behaved "pets," and also help with household chores! What to Call It It is called a "home vermiculture system" or "worm box system." The system contains
    • A physical structure : a redworm box or container Biological organisms A controlled environment : temperature, moisture, acidity A maintenance program : bedding preparation, food waste burying, separating redworms from compost and using compost
Where to Put It Consider the needs of redworms and needs of the owner. Redworms need controlled temperature, contolled moisture content, controlled aeration and proper pH. Temperature: Redworms tolerate a wide range of temperatures, however, the ideal temperature is between 55 – 77 degrees F. Bedding with a temperature above 84 degrees F. is harmful, sometimes fatal, to redworm populations. The temperature should be measured inside the box, because the temperature in the moist bedding is usually lower than the outside air.
