Computer architecture
Computer architecture is the theory behind the design of a computer. In the same way as a building architect sets the principles and goals of a building project as the basis for the draftsman's plans, so too, a computer architect sets out the computer architecture as a basis for the actual design specifications. There are several usages of the term, which can be used to refer to: Design Goals The most common goals in a Computer Architecture revolve around the tradeoffs between cost and performance (i.e. speed), although other considerations, such as size, weight, and power consumption, may be a factor as well.

Jump to: navigation search In computer engineering, computer architecture is the conceptual design and fundamental operational structure of a computer system. It is a blueprint and functional description of requirements (especially speeds and interconnections) and design implementations for the various parts of a computer — focusing largely on the way by which the central processing unit (CPU) performs internally and accesses addresses in memory. It may also be defined as the science and art of selecting and interconnecting hardware components to create computers that meet functional, performance and cost goals. "Architecture" therefore typically refers to the fixed internal structure of the CPU (i.e. electronic switches to represent logic gates) to perform logical operations, and may also include the built-in interface (i.e. opcodes) by which hardware resources (i.e. CPU, memory, and also motherboard, peripherals) may be used by the software. More specific usages of the term include: The design of a computer's CPU architecture, instruction set, addressing modes, and techniques such as SIMD and MIMD parallelism. More general wider-scale hardware architectures, such as cluster computing and Non-Uniform Memory Access (NUMA) architectures. The set of machine attributes that a programmer should understand to successfully program the computer. Parts of the architecture are the instructions and the width of operands. The system frequency (e.g. 1 GHz) is not part of the architecture.

Computer Architecture Computer architectures deal with computer hardware configurations and how they interface with software. The two main entities of computer architecture are the CPU (central processing unit) and memory . Memory stores data and instructions in blocks or cells, and the CPU is responsible for fetching and executing instructions from memory. Memory is partitioned into a hierarchical structure such that storage size increases going down the pyramid but the access time increases going up the pyramid. There is a lot of research in operating systems and computer architecture for making access time quicker and memory cheaper.
As just described these concepts of memory and CPU are pretty basic, but whatÕs not basic are the details of how we (as programmers) communicate with a computer. As you may already know computers only understand electronic pulses, that is, on or off, hence or 1. Ever since the birth of modern-day digital/programmable computers we have made significant progress into providing an interoperable means for humans and computers to effectively interact. In other words, there is essentially a mapping between user level language and binary language. This complexity is handled with a layered structure of abstractions:
Since I mostly live at the high-level (OO/C++/Java programming) environment, I wonÕt go into great detail regarding architectures. However, it is important (for us) to have a fundamental understanding of computer architectures not only to appreciate what goes on underneath the covers, but you never know when you need to potentially work at the level. For instance, IÕve had some embedded (C/Assembly) programming experience as well as other research endeavors that dove head first into primitive instruction sets, etc.

I was thinking to create a picture about the main component inside the CPU plus its connection to memory. It would contain the data bus, address bus, arithmetic unit plus program counter and so on. Ervinn 02:32, 26 January 2007 (UTC)
edit Something's wrong with endianness!
The error I'm pointing out is so common that I've always been completely unable to clearly know the difference between each endianness. I mean, it's clear that the in-memory representation of multi-byte data on a LE computer will look reversed when compared with a BE computer; however, the definition given here (as well as in every other reference document I've consulted) is equivalent for both cases, so one of the definitions must be wrong. To put this issue clear, according to the definitions given: Computers that order data with the LS byte in the lowest address are known as "Little Endian", and computers that order the data with the

This is a draft article , under development. These unapproved articles are subject to edit intro Computer architecture is often used to refer to an area of specialization within the academic discipline of computer science . At other times, the phrase computer architecture may be used to refer to a specific machine specification, such as SPARC Intel X86 PowerPC , or Motorola 680x0 . A more precise designation for specifying such machines is instruction set architecture (ISA). In the 1980's, when computer architecture programs first began within computer science departments at various universities, heavy emphasis was placed on research related to designing better ISA's. Nowadays, the industry has converged on a few different ISA's and tends to rebuild them over and over again with faster hardware, so computer architecture has moved to focus more on the ways to speed up computer hardware and system-level software than on designing new ISA's. The academic discipline of computer architecture thus tends to overlap somewhat with fields called computer engineering , or the like, that usually are located within the academic discipline of electrical engineering . The field known as computer architecture may touch all aspects of how specific computers can be specified, built, and verified (tested).
