Computer Literacy/Information Competence Statement and Requirements CSUS is committed to the informed and ethical use of electronic technologies. Given the cultural and individual significance of computers, and the potential and perceived effects of new technologies on the process of intellectual inquiry, it is crucial that CSUS graduates be prepared for life in a knowledge-driven, technology-based society. The CSUS curriculum, in both General Education and the majors, provides students with opportunities to explore the uses of computers as tools for learning. Before graduation, CSUS students will be expected to demonstrate their abilities to:
  • Acquire, process, communicate, and critically evaluate information using current electronic technologies.
  • A fundamental understanding of computer operations, experience with contemporary user interfaces and basic word processing skills are expected at entrance. Students will acquire and demonstrate competence in the use of computers and networks to access databases and retrieve information. Students will also develop competence in the use of computer systems for effective communication.
  • Use advanced computer skills appropriate to the requirements of a major and related careers.

According to the Technological Fluency Institute , computer literacy "is the knowledge and ability to use computers and technology efficiently." From Wikipedia , "the precise definition of 'computer literacy' can vary from group to group. Generally, literate (in the realm of books) connotes one who can read any arbitrary book in their native language[s], looking up new words as they are exposed to them. Likewise, an experienced computer professional may consider the ability to self-teach (i.e. to learn arbitrary new programs or tasks as they are encountered) to be central to computer literacy. In common discourse, however, 'computer literate' often connotes little more than the ability to use several very specific applications (usually Microsoft Word, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Outlook) for certain very well-defined simple tasks, largely by rote. (This is analogous to a child claiming that they 'can read' because they have rote-memorized several small children's books. Real problems can arise when such a 'computer literate' person encounters a new program for the first time, and large degrees of 'hand-holding' will likely be required.) Being 'literate' and 'functional' are generally taken to mean the same thing."

    WHY CALL IT
    COMPUTER
    LITERACY?
    by Inabeth Miller
Inabeth Miller is librarian to the faculty of the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is also administrator of the Educational Technologies Data Base Project.
T housands of voices are rising in a chorus of "Computer Literacy for All." We are being asked, cajoled, required to change our school curricula, our work patterns, our lifestyles. Like immigrants to a new technological society, taught again by our children, we are promised a better future if we can learn to manipulate its symbols.
The traditional meaning of literacy is the ability to read and write. A "learned" or "literate" person has been exposed to writings and is thus considered educated. Literacy has been considered a necessity for functioning in modern society, despite many conflicting and romanticized historical examples of illiterate successes. Those who could read became the priests and advisers to kings in many cultures. More recently, the ability to read was deemed necessary to becoming a citizen, driving a car or seeking employment.
The search for literacy has replaced elitist literati with nearly universal ignorami. The education establishment has long ignored the individual who could paint, write music, manipulate tools, perform physical feats, instead concentrating on its primary mission of unlocking numbers and letters.

Computer Literacy and the Graduation Requirement for Oak Park High School This information will provide a process for incoming freshmen to validate their computer literacy for high school. Please read carefully and watch for information from your computer teacher at Medea Creek Middle School. Many students at Medea Creek Middle school are in the process or have already completed the “ Computers 7/8” class. Items # 2 and 3 below explain how those students can use either the “A grades” they have earned in this class, or the skills they have learned to allow them to pass a test to request a more advanced computer class in high school. This does not usually affect too many students during the freshman year since most are taking a foreign language as their elective, but it may help some make up their mind about taking a summer school class or not. OPHS requires the successful completion of a semester long computer course as a graduation requirement. Many students want to take several advanced computer courses and already possess the skills to enroll in those advanced courses, but they have to offer proof of that computer proficiency. We accept as evidence of proficiency: Grades of A, B, or C in the OPHS or another high school’s Computer Applications semester long class. Passing the class will meet the high school graduation credit and will allow students to move on to an advanced class. This class can be taken any time after a student culminates from middle school, including summer school.
