The focus of Map Collections Map Collections is organized according to seven major categories. Because a map will be assigned to only one category, unless it is part of more than one core collection, searching Map Collections at this level will provide the most complete results since the indexes for all categories are searched simultaneously. Searching Map Collections The mission of the Library of Congress is to make its resources available and useful to Congress and the American people and to sustain and preserve a universal collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. The goal of the Library's National Digital Library Program is to offer broad public access to a wide range of historical and cultural documents as a contribution to education and lifelong learning. The Library of Congress presents these documents as part of the record of the past. These primary historical documents reflect the attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs of different times. The Library of Congress does not endorse the views expressed in these collections, which may contain materials offensive to some readers.

The U.S. Congress The U.S. Congress is made up of two parts, the House of Representatives and the Senate. Congress meets at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Its primary duty is to write, debate, and pass bills, which are then passed on to the President for approval. Other Powers of Congress
  • Makes laws controlling trade between states and between the
United States and other countries. Makes laws about taxes and borrowing money. Approves the making of money. Can declare war on other countries.
Each Congress lasts for two years. When the two years are over, new Members of Congress are elected. We are currently in the 110th Congress. Congress meets once every year and usually last from January 3rd to July 31st, but in special cases, it can last longer. The way that states are represented in the House and the Senate is different. Why is this? Well, when the Founding Fathers were drafting the Constitution, there were debates over how states would be represented. States with larger populations wanted more representation than states with smaller populations. Meanwhile, states with smaller populations favored equal representation. So, a compromise was made Representation in the Senate would be equal, while representation in the House would be based on population. To learn more, choose from the following:

May 28th, 2008 President Bush announced in his speech at the graduation of the new batch of US Airforce graduates that the present war is very similar to the war a couple of decades ago. Bush stressed that we should do the same thing as well. Although the war is not over yet, he said that we should help them out should it come to an end. Right now, US military must be focused in winning the war. Bush encouraged everyone to do their best and to help them the countries that were affected after the war to give them freedom and make them prosperous allies of the US. The SAVIN System
May 27th, 2008 Known as Statewide Automated Victim Information Network, SAVIN is being used by almost everyone who has something to do or has some sort of a connection with someone in prison. Victims are the beneficiaries of this system. At some point, one psycho criminal who got his freedom may seek out revenge or redemption to his victim. So, the system is around to track the tormentors. If you are one of the victims, you can have peace of mind if you would come to know that your tormentor is still in prison. And if in any case, he gets out of the prison, you would get a heads up call from authorities. This is totally a peace of mind for the victims especially of a stalking crime. Once traumatized, even the slightest hiss of a cat would frighten a stalking crime victim. This system will give them a good night sleep.

Farm Bill Conference Report Passes House and Senate, Faces Presidential Veto
The 2008 Farm Bill conference report was passed by the House of Representatives by a 318-106 vote yesterday afternoon. The Senate passed the report 85-15 this morning. The President has threatened to veto the bill, but the margins in both chambers is well beyond the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto. The Farm Bill conference report authorizes nearly $300 billion worth of USDA programs over the next 5 years. 73% of the total price will be spent on nutrition programs, such as the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR) and the Food Stamp Program. The Farm Bill also covers crop payments, conservation, credit and loan programs, forestry, rural development, research, energy, livestock, disaster programs and other miscellaneous programs that USDA manages.
