Vegetable Seed Varieties for Containers
Ann Cherin Articles in this Topic Discussions in this Topic Feb 1, 2000
Although winter brings a break from the garden for most of us in the US, January and February hold a special place in the hearts of many gardeners as dozens of seed catalogs pile up in the mail. Sitting inside on a snowy day is the perfect time to flip through the pages and imagine all the possibilities. As I was browsing this year's catalogs I noticed that a lot more seed companies are selling vegetable seeds specially bred to meet the small space needs of container gardening. I put together a list of the ones I found I'd love to hear from anyone who's tried any of these, or has others to recommend.

Using Containers in Your Shady Space Currently, the trend for home gardening is container gardening. Using containers, you can simplify your work load and add color and shape to small or dull looking areas. Here are some tips to get you started:
  • Stuff your pots with as much plant material as possible. This gives your pot a fuller look and allows you to include a variety of colors and textures. Use slow release fertilizer after planting to cut down on the number of times you will need to fertilize. Change the plants on a seasonal basis to maintain color. Plant containers in groups, varying the size and height of pots. Remove dead leaves or blooms weekly to keep your plants healthy and looking good.
What kind of media is best in containers? The most important factor in choosing the right media to use in a pot is drainage. If you use regular soil, chances are that it will be compact and stay too wet all the time, especially if it is clay.

@import url(http://www.homestead.com/~media/elements/Text/font_styles.css); Container gardening is making use of different containers to hold your plants. These work for flowers, herbs, and even for vegetables. Container garden requires less maintenance than more conventional flowerbeds and gardens because there is less amendment to the soil and because there are fewer weed problems. Additionally, the costs associated with preparing an area for planting can be avoided when one uses carefully considered containers and planters for their landscaping.
One of the great things about container gardening is the wide variety of items that can be used as containers. Many of the items can be found around the house or even purchased from thrift stores. Old washtubs, and even filing cabinets laid on their sides and removed of their drawers (which can also be used as containers) make great containers. You can even cut the tops off of milk cartons and use the bottom sections as planters. These everyday items can be attractively decorated to look nice.
In addition to converting things like coffee cans and old shoes into fun and cute flower and herb holders, there are plenty of more traditional planters and containers that can be incorporated into an attractive landscape design. Clay pots and large urns make attractive holders, and the urns can even be used to hold vegetables. Additionally, container gardening is not limited to the ground. Hanging baskets bought at the store make excellent additions to any landscape. Plus, they can be hanged from the house, the porch, and even from tree branches and along fences. These baskets create little bursts of color no matter where they are. Window boxes are also attractive variations on container gardening and can add a great deal to the look of a home.

How To Bonsai - Critical Bonsai Care Tips
by Andrew Perry Bonsai Care Well, you have got the watering and feeding of the Bonsai down. Think you're home free. Not a chance. There are still things you need to do successfully to realize the full beauty of these little Japanese wonders. Since the care of the root system is essential to the survival of the trees you need to know the how and when of re-potting your bonsai. This is one of the many steps to proper Bonsai Care. The importance of Re-potting The young bonsai trees grow quicker and need to be repotted about once a year. The older trees not so often and eventually get to a point where repotting every 5 years is sufficient. Repotting should be done in the late winter or early spring. This is when the buds begin to swell. First, you should prune your bonsai. Take away any unwanted or long branches. If your bonsai is kept outside it should be placed undercover for a few weeks before repotting. This will help dry the soil. You need to carefully remove the tree from its original pot. Check the root carefully. If they are bound then it is definitely time to transfer it to another pot. If the roots still have some space to grow (a few inches is sufficient) then it does not need repotting.

Gardeners: Contain Yourselves! by: Debbie Rodgers Whether you live in a tiny city apartment or on a large country estate, gardening in containers is a way to add colour and the beauty of nature to your surroundings. The three main elements of creating successful containers gardens are:
  • Choosing the pots
  • Getting the right planting medium
  • Selecting the plants
In all of these elements, the key is to create a healthy growing environment for the plant roots. For a healthy root system, water must be able to pass quickly through the soil. As the water drains out, air replaces it in the soil and an exchange of carbon dioxide is made with the plant roots. This movement of water and air is essential to a healthy plant. Here are some tips to help you choose from the dizzying array of pots, troughs and boxes:

The modern gardeners use all types of materials to make their own containers for their gardening needs. Woods, stoneware, and plastic are the most common types. Wood are the most natural and blend into the garden seamlessly, while stoneware provides colors to the mix, plastic is less expansive but seemed to be odd in the natural setting. Excellent for urban gardening where space is limited, use them as rooftop or balcony garden container, where weight is a concern.

Introduction
If you don't have space for a vegetable garden, consider raising fresh, nutritious, homegrown vegetables in containers. A window sill, patio, balcony, or doorstep can provide sufficient space for a productive container garden. Problems with soil-borne diseases, nematodes, or poor soil can also be overcome by switching to container gardening.
