Guide To Basic Container Gardening
Container gardening can be very convenient for individuals with minimal space in their homes or those who wish to have plants inside their homes. Container gardening enables the gardener to bring in a splash of color to their homes. Compared to single pots, most containers used in container gardening are relatively large and can contain several plants of the same species or of different species. Choosing A Container For You Garden One thing that you should consider when choosing a container is the kind of plant you wish to put in the container. Some vegetables require deeper pots for their roots to burrow into while others do not require as much space. Container gardening mediums vary from containers such as plastic pots, terracotta containers and wooden boxes.

Courtyard and Container Garden
Courtyards can seem to be a problem but with a little thought they can be full of potential. Walls and fences can be used to create height and interest. If you are going to use walls or fences make sure your neighbour does not object as the fence or wall may belong to them.
Trellis is very useful for growing climbing plants up but you can also use it for hanging pots on with trailing plants or even strawberries or tumbling tomatoes.
Shelves can be put up on a wall to hold pots, do make sure that they are secure and the shelves wide enough to hold the pot and allow for the plants foliage as well. Don’t forget you have to bale to reach them to give them water and food.
Steps can be made from breeze blocks and wooden planks. Start with a couple of bricks at intervals and place a wide plank on top. Then for the next step place bricks directly above the first bricks and place another narrower plank on top of that continue until you have the height you want. You will only be able to use the front of the lower steps for plants but you could store pots in the spaces behind them. Make sure they are safe though you don’t want them falling place them by a wall.
Pots can be used in a similar way. You can have up turned pots to make the plants higher than others creating interest and giving a nice display of pots. Of course you could stand them on breeze blocks to give the same look without using pots.

Container Gardening
If you have a small area or don't have the capacity to grow a large garden, consider container gardening. Gardening in containers can be just as rewarding as having a full-size garden. Many plants grow in pots just as well as they do in the ground. There are a few things to consider when planning for a successful container garden. The first is the plants. If you are planting more than one plant in the same pot, which many do for an attractive and interesting container garden, be sure that all your plants meet the same requirements. Requirements to consider are amount of light, amount of water, and fertilizer scheduling. Also be sure that the size of the container matches the size of your plant. Some other things you might consider when planning your container garden are height, color, and texture. Variations of these elements will make your container gardens more attractive and very interesting to look at. When watering your container gardens, the best time to do so is in the morning. Watering in the morning allows your leaves and soil to dry out, preventing diseases and viruses. You should water your plant accordingly. You should check to see if your plants need watering before adding more. Overwatering is the most common reason for container plants dying. If you push your finger into the soil, this should give you an idea of how moist or dry the soil is. Do not water a plant if the soil is already moist.

Learn Winter Sowing methods for Container Gardening. You can easily and inexpensively create beautiful planters, halfbarrels and other large planters that
http://wintersown.org/wseo1/Container_Gardening.html
HOME I like Container Gardening....can I Winter Sow?
Yes you can.....and this can be LOTS of fun! When should I sow the seeds? I've got barrels and other planters. If you can get them sown right before the soil in them freezes hard for the Winter you'll be doing just fine. My planters have already frozen! What can I do? This is easy too. You simply need a bag of room temperature potting soil. This is how you do it: Go to your frozen planter. If your seeds are very tiny (the type that don't need to be covered and just patted into the soil surface) you have to put a layer of potting soil on top of the frozen soil in the container, an inch thick layer of potting soil is just fine. Sprinkle your seeds onto the surface of the potting soil and pat them in firmly with the palm of your hand. If you've got seeds that need to be covered it's just as easy too. Sprinkle your seeds on top of the frozen soil in the container and then cover them with the potting soil to the correct depth, firmly pat the soil down with the palm of your hand. There's no need to water the seeds in the containers as Mother Nature will provide rain or snow. If your container is in a sheltered location you should give it a light drink of water.....use a watering can that has a sprinkler nozzle on it. You don't want to water the soil with a hose that gushes out a stream of water, it will dislodge the seeds and move them all about from where they were sown.

Container Gardening
Tip! Sure, a nice 1 X 4 window garden getting at least 4 or 5 hours of direct light from a sunny window will give you something to pinch here and there. Gardens with mint, rosemary, bay leaf, savory, oregano, chervil, sand thyme are some of the easiest to grow this way. Container gardening enables you to easily vary your color scheme, and as each plant finishes flowering, it can be replaced with another. Whether you choose to harmonize or contrast your colors, make sure there is variety in the height of each plant. Think also of the shape and texture of the leaves. Tall strap-like leaves will give a good vertical background to low-growing, wide-leaved plants. Choose plants with a long flowering season, or have others of a different type ready to replace them as they finish blooming. Tip! Herbs like basil are best when harvested before flowers open. You will get your highest essetial oil levels when you harvest at the end of the dark period
Always use a good quality potting mix in your containers. This will ensure the best performance possible from your plants. Tip!

Container Gardening
Combining an interesting container and a collection of plants can't help but produce a work of art. Add in the fact that everyone has a spot even if it is just a balcony that can be transformed into a garden with pots of flowering plants, and you'll see why container gardening continues to grow in popularity. Growing plants in containers is easy, and such gardens are easy to maintain as long as a few rules are followed. As with any garden, routine care is needed. Because of the limited amount of soil, frequent watering and periodic fertilization are a must. A light well-drained soil is also critical. Garden soil does not work. A potting soil is more likely to result in a container full of beautiful and healthy plants. A good potting mix will feel light even in the bag. Pick up a bag of dry potting soil. Is it lighter than you thought it would be? If so, you've made a good choice. Watering is a critical detail. Plants in pots quickly use the available soil moisture; so daily watering is most likely the rule. I have seen elaborate watering systems of spaghetti tube and small emitters engineered to water whole collections of containers on decks or individual pots placed in large flowerbeds.

Which Containers To Use You can also buy fancy and complicated self-watering pots from garden centres (expensive, small and still plastic), or scrounge foam boxes from the fruit and veg shop (a good size, light and with automatic drainage, but they crumble with age and smaller folk may not be able to resist breaking pieces off). Another alternative for the DIY handyman: buy plastic storage containers and drill a few holes in the bottom. It all really depends on how much space you have, how much you want to spend to get set up, and how much you value aesthetics in food production.
What to Grow Growing Lettuce and Salad Greens The easiest are salad greens. You can grow them in foam boxes from the fruit shop, large black plastic pots from Big W, even an old (and clean) kitty litter tray. Eden Seeds sells a mesclun mix which will give you weeks and weeks of fresh salad and asian greens - mignonette and cos lettuces, mizuna, tatsoi, pak choy - for $2.80 a packer.

Container Gardening Pond or Desert? Container Garden Vignettes Satisfy Grand Desires.
By Sandy Metzger, Sonoma County Master Gardener
If you've always dreamed of having a pond in your backyard or a desert-style garden somewhere, dream no more. A pond in a pot or small succulent scene can satisfy those desires. Both do best in sun and are easy, but otherwise have different needs.
Water gardens
A perfect container for a water garden is a watertight half wine barrel, preferably an unused one (cleaning a red wine barrel is a challenge). Other excellent containers might include large ceramic pots or bowls or galvanized tubs or horse troughs, whatever matches your garden, patio, or deck d©cor.
Decide what garden look you want: hardy water lilies or hyacinths floating on the water, unusual grasses, dwarf cattails or bog plants, or floriferous perennials for splashes of color. Whichever way you decide to go, I think it's important to be able to actually see some of the water. As small an area as it may be, there's a certain serene aspect to the water, with reflections of the trees and clouds, and perhaps a couple of dragonflies buzzing around.
You may be immediately worried about what else could be attracted to your water garden: mosquitoes. You can take care of that in several ways: add year-round mosquito fish (free from the Mosquito and Vector Control District or local nursery), or a "mosquito dunk" or other similar product. A pond or fountain "cleanser" helps keep the algae at bay. During the hotter months, you'll have to add water once or twice a week to keep it as high as the top of your pots.

Growing Plants in Pots and Containers!
Perfect for the Patio.
Container gardening - or growing plants in pots - has seen a huge increase in popularity during the last ten years. The reasons for the increased popularity of growing plants in pots are many and varied. Container compost for pot grown plants have improved; the range of plants available for containers has increased; container gardening it is an 'easy' way to garden; you can have colourful plants nearer to the house etc etc etc. Plants in pots and tubs also make for great colour photographs - the gardening magazines love them. It helps to 'brighten up' magazines and books. You can also have a 'container garden' wherever you want it to be, and change the containers round regularly. More or less any plant can be grown in a container, and when you think of it, most plants that you purchase these days have been grown at the nursery in some form of container (pot) or other. You can go for a single plant option - like the fuchsia in the stone pot below, or absolutely blitz your containers with a wide range of bedding plants. Pubs love this approach as you can see!
